The Next realignment

I've always wondered as the science on CTE and head injuries and injuries in general around football continues to become more and more clear, if Georgia Tech, one of the premier STEM schools in the country, would start waving the flag questioning surrender of that sport up on the Hill.

I feel that the graduate research model could be a viable solution. Give the players tuition and a yearly stipend (paid by TV contracts or whatever) in the range of $20-35k based on a location's cost of living. Give some committee the ability to oversee cost of living justification so that schools in the middle of nowhere don't trump bigger city schools. Similarly to college football, university research is a multi billion dollar industry built on the backs of grad students working long hours for little compensation. Yeah, they would want (and probably deserve) a bigger slice of the pie too. But the opportunity to gain the education/degree is an investment in the future. The issue with the comparison is that graduate research leads to an inherently valuable PhD, while too many of these athletes are opting for or being pushed into worthless degrees. They have little fall back options if the NFL doesn't happen.

The alternative is to create a minor league and give high schoolers the option to go there or go to college. This is similar to how the NHL drafts and develops players from the OHL and NCAA. In the Minor League you'll get paid on a weekly/monthly basis and can get cut on those intervals, but you can get a decent income. You'll probably lose a lot of your 5* guys to the higher paying minor league and college football quality will suffer, but those that want an education or to be apart of a school (which will have a huge head start on facilities) will be more apparent. It might also lead to more parity when you take out the elite players. But who knows.
I believe what you mentioned is what already is happening, but the stipend the players receive is apparently not enough to appease them (I believe each school's is different).

With regards to a minor league, will the new Alliance of American Football have the same age limitation on as NFL? Players in the league get 3 year non guaranteed contracts of $250,000. As a 5 star recruit maybe 3 years in the AAF could serve as better prep than NFAAF. Time will tell.

It’s still hard for me to believe all of the technological advances we’ve had over the past century and we can’t make a helmet that will protect the players.

I think the problem is that there is only so much you can do when you have a pair of 250 pound athletes running into each other at 20mph. I'm going from memory, but while severe concussions are not a good thing, I think there is a lot of science emerging on the fact that its 1,000 little tiny impacts that are also cumulatively dangerous over time. So there's probably not much you can actually do about that.

Let the NFL develop a farm system like that of MLB. They then draft kids out of high school, sign those who want to skip college and the athletic, smart ones remaining go to college for the love of the game and for the free education. If kids are not good enough to get drafted by the NFL and don’t want to go to college, they can get jobs like everyone else.

Im all for that as well but it aint gonna happen so long as schools allow anyone who can play football at a high level in. Colleges are doing that for them right now.

This is just another chapter towards the demise of college football as we have enjoyed it. Too much money and greed.

As a technology disrupter, streaming technology, I think, will affect distribution in ways we have not thought about yet.

What will end football is lower middle class, middle class, upper middle class and upper class kids no longer playing football. The only ones in the future who will play football in the little leagues, parks and recreation, middle schools and high schools will be kids from the Lower Class and they will be playing because a football scholarship could be their only way to go to college. Football will die in the next 20 years because the level of play in college football and the NFL will go down because of lack of talent and because of that people will quit watching and football will become a niche sport.

Which is a shame because I got so much out of playing football. Dedication, sportsmanship, leadership and the love of the game.

I think Little League,High School,College and NFL football will eventually die as a sport or be banned within 20 years because parents not letting their children play and because of lawsuits concerning head injuries,

and the rise of interest in soccer in this country.

No excuse to not be pushing for a championship every year. GT needs to find the money, alumni need to give up the money, and make us big spenders.

I agree.

and if you want to ensure that the GTAA never sees another dime from people like me, just try and move down a level. I wouldn't attend another game.

I was thinking about this last night. If/when this split occurs 2 things need to occur to go along with the new classification:

1) A real commissioner with real power in charge of this league. Rules need to be set and they need to be followed by the schools that take part in it, unlike the situation we are in today.
2) There needs to be a spending floor and a spending ceiling in place for participating schools. No schools in the situation Vandy is in now. If you are going to proclaim your intention to take part in the new classification, you need to put your money down and ensure you are not just there to receive a check with no chance of really competing. We also don't need Bama just having one to one coaches on salary so there has to be a spending cap.

Vandy would rather stay in the SEC and leech off of SEC Bowl and NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament money

Vandy would be SOL in the new classification;) I get the feeling the classification GT,Duke,Tulane,Rice and Vandy would be in would just be a new version of D1AA:rolleyes:
I think that is EXACTLY what is going to happen. I think schools like Wake, Syracuse, PITT, BC, Virginia end up with us.

What I keep reading is about a 40 team super classification. Most of the SEC, best of the other power 5.
