The problem is not Coach Johnson's Offense, I think it was the recruiting efforts before Ted Roof/Mike Pelton came on board...(Al Groh) Lets take a look at 2012/2013 recuiting classes that happened before Ted Roof came to the flats and 2014-2016 since Ted Roof. This is why CPJ says we are young, becuase we are and also alot of our Recuits have been dismissed/Quit or medical, so it makes it tough when the 2012-13 classes are gutted and they are the leaders or are suppose to be leaders.. We are young, but we are getting better every week.

Also when you add in the transfers of OL E. Froyman, AB JJ Green and DB Lamont Simmons, I can not but help see a huge diff between DC Ted Roof and his recruiting talents compared to the guys before him. What does this mean? the 2017 season will be the first season of four years of Ted Roof recruiting. (He has helped reopen Atlanta market, LA, FLA, Carolinas and Tenn, We are not recruiting the Washington DC, Maryland markets as much since Groh left) We are young and that the 2017 ,18 and 19 seasons should be fun years for the folks who would like us to be in the hunt for 9-1o win seasons ACC titles..

I'm sorry but roof has had enough time, I'm not doubting his recruiting because I think he is a very good recruiter, but he hasn't done much as a D coordinator at any other school, so why do you think he will with GT? The issue imo is our scheme, to run what we have you need Alabama type talent and size, it calls you to win the one on one battles and when the other team have superior athletes on offense that's not going to happen often. We don't have the size to run this style D imo.

I disagree, we will never have the talent of bama becuase high school players who considers college nothing more than "the NFL minor league" are looking for the easiest route to that ultimate goal, the NFL, are not going to wrestle with the academic rigors at GT.

I think Ted Roof defense is improving every year as he gets his players in his system. I have seen improvement this year, if our offense was humming we would be praising both coaches like in 2014... However we are notthere yet... Lets see how this season unfolds and how we do in 2017 before we start calling for jobs... Ted Roof Defense has been way better then Al Groh....by a country mile

I was curious, so I went and looked up Scout's average star ratings for recent GT signing classes. They are:

2016 2.83 TR
2015 2.93 TR
2014 2.90 TR
2013 2.86
2012 2.88
2011 2.73
2010 3.00
2009 2.95

I see no discernible uptick in recruiting based on "expert" opinions.

By the way, since I was there I also looked up a few of our Coastal competitors. These figures are for the 4 years 2012-2015 inclusive and are simple averages os the star rating of each class:

GT 2.89
Miami 3.23
UNC 3.16
VT 2.98
Pitt 2.97
Duke 2.68
Clemson 3.38

We'll see how this plays out, but we have lost a ton of close games to the teams on this list that are just a smudge better than us in recruiting. Duke is the one team on the list that would seem to have NO business competing with the others, and in fact while they are sometimes playing close games, the only team on that list they are actually winning against is....us. They have beaten us two years in a row. They have lost 2 in a row to the entire rest of the Coastal (I believe) after sweeping them all (except us) in 2013.

I know we all pooh-pooh recruiting rankings. And with some fair reasons. Our outstanding 2014 team was comprised of players from lower rated recruiting classes and yet we finished in the Top Ten at the end of the year. (NB- It is interesting to note that the 2 year recruiting rankings for GT from 2009-2010 (who would have been the senior leaders in 2014) was 2.975, slightly above our historical average). was Yet, on average, they do seem to be indicative. Our performance since 2014 would certainly suggest that the recruiting ratings are one indicator.

Ok... Now look at Rivals, 247 and ESPN... then and only than can you say it is up or down... If you only use one system you are fooling yourself..

I think this is the problem really...

The scheme in and of itself is not bad...if you have really good athletes to run it. This models works well if you can get a lot of pressure with your front four and you have extremely athletic corners. I'm just not sure that describes our defense. Teams like Alabama can just line up like this and beat you with superior talent.

I think we'd be better suited mixing up the looks and confusing opposing QB's when we play passing teams, but reverting back to this system against traditional power running teams...yet still mixing in more looks on passing downs.
100% correct. I have been saying this for 3 years now.

Since we're on the recruiting talk. Here's my facts

1. Any 4 or 5 star player that is a senior in high school has been approached by an agent. Agents "guide" them to which school to choose. If they are an All American Under Armor player, they have had multiple agents and colleges (illegally) contacting them. Heck, my buddy from the Marines, has a kind playing in NC. He is just 16 and Sophomore year in High School. The kid is 6' 4", throws 40 yards with no effort and run a 4.4. He has already had 3 sports agents, UNC, Duke, UGA, Miami, FSU and UVA all send "scouts" down to talk to him. He isn't even rated. But, as a Freshman he led his team to the state championship and so far, undefeated this year. Point is, the illegal stuff is happening. Anyone that says otherwise is a moron. GT plays by the rules, which sometimes puts them at a disadvantage. No shock to hear UGA contacted them. Was shocked about Duke, though.

2. Money...Cars....Girls...etc: I also know a certain school that gives cars to recruits that sign with them. Another friend of mine has an uncle serving time for fraud. He worked at the DMV and illegally took cars that boosters bought and washed it away, so that the school had no hands in it. Money? Houses? Look at USC (which should of been given the death penalty, like SMU) giving Reggie Bush's mom a house and a job (money). Girls, Oklahoma State.. Need I say more?

3. GT doesn't have the recruiting force that some "football factories" do. UGA, Bama, Clemson, Michigan, etc; All have big recruitment programs. GT, does not. Again.. disadvantage to us.

With all of this... You would expect GT to end up with 2 and 3 star type players. People want to know why GT doesn't sign these high ranked recruits. Well, there ya go. It's all about money. Has nothing to do with education.

I never said we will get Bama type players, what I'm sayin is our scheme we run takes those type of players. Also our D was awful in 2014, we were good at getting turnovers and that's about it. What do you see that has improved? Roof has 4 years of players, I'm sorry but once you have upser class men that you recruited you no longer have an excuse. If Roof had done something special at some other school (which I haven't seen) I would maybe say ok, one more year, but do you honestly think we will have a good D next year? I hope so but I just don't see it right now. LB's are slow looking and make tackles 3 and 4 yards from the los, db's are way off the los and we get eat up with screens and short routes, we only have one guy on the D line getting pressure, and are losing our best D linemen next year. I'm sorry but these things go to coaching and scheme. To read and react like we do you need superior athletes, we need to allow our guys to not have to think and just let them go. Get more exotic on blitz packages and stop blitzing at LB when you are 7 yards off the ball, run more stunts, stop faking the blitz and coming out of it way to early so the offense can adjust, these are all coaching things, it's like we fake a blitz and come out super early to make sure they get in coverage fast enough, what the point in even faking, the point of faking a blitz is to make the OL adjust on who they think they are blocking. We should not be content as a fan base with a D out of the top 30.

Either he's a great recruiter as you say, but something about GT (facilities, academic offerings, the Hill, etc.) prevent him from getting great players, or he's not a great recruiter.
Or he's a good recruiter, but not coaching the kids up, or playing them to their strengths. which imo it's playing then to their strengths.

Pretty good look. I don't think Lee and Cooper are Redshirting this year. I know Lee's played, and I think Cooper has too.

Also, for those poo-pooing the more-time, we lost some significant talent from the 2012 and 2013 DL classes. That being said, I still tend to agree with those who say that we're not maximizing what could be done with our current talent through scheme.

ONE of the BIG def problems that few people bring up is the Offense we run .They(our def) sees the this special RUNNING attack A LOT.They get use to this offense and players..It is very different than most Os we play against. Also, we don't have a either top passers nor top WRs so they don't practice vs the pass attacks other teams bring. Our answer to passes is to sit in a soft zone and HOPE they miss.Good luck.We are giving up about 70% completion and getting zip INTs. Of course not having a rush hurts also.

... just saying that during the season the number one defense practices against the practice squad offense. And vice versa. At least that's my understanding.

We also use our number 1/2 offense vs number 1/2 defense in passing skels, 7v7, and other drills. When we scrimmage in Spring and Fall, we will also have our number 1 offense run some sets for the defense, and we often run our base D against our O (rather than scheming against our O) in order to train gap discipline and eyes etc.

TIFWIW: Navy just defended Houston's passing attack better than anyone else this year. Army just defended Duke's passing attack better than anyone else this year.

Really? Why should we be in the top 30 for recruiting? No coach at Tech has ever been consistently in the top 30. It is the most fertile recruiting ground and every program in the country recruits here. I would love to be top 30 in recruiting and have a consistent top 25 team but no coach has been able to do it in 50 years. Sure we can change coaches and DC's, but it's the same results. I'm on board with the crowd that says its at a much higher level. Here's to hoping the new AD hire is the beginning of the change that needs to take place.

We could be in the top 30 if we didn't self-impose so many handcuffs (calc, Cs, lab sci, Russell).
