Spring Practice

As a 69 grad I noticed the drop off of the effectvness in game play calling. Sure there was a drop off in talent but it was pretty much the same play call every game. The thing I loved was the defense didnt drop off and actually played harder.
It seemed like Coach Carson was no nonsense guy who was great at game preparation. Then it was time for the press conference where the press thing was very very tough for him.

The away win over a good Auburn team was typical. The same plays even though Larry Good was near perfect in passing. He was unstoppable as the few dropped passes hit the receivers in the hand or face. We fought hard and won on a last play FG as the sun came out. The sun shined like a spotlight on the white and gold uniforms as the team came out of the huddle. Still see the ball splitting the uprights.

The end for Carson came when legendary sports writer at the Atlanta Journal, Furman Bisher, wrote a blistering top of sport section article on the whole Dodd replacement fiasco. It opened with " Georgia Tech is the Ramblin Wrek and a Helluva shape it's in. " He had to go.
The Atlanta press is vital .

Imo, unlike the unnamed coach referenced by ae87, I think Carson's record would have significantly improved if given more time.
My sentiments exactly.

An improvement over status quo would be winning the Coastal nearly every year. And we are playing straight up now schematically, no 3O arbitrage.

So to achieve our goal, we have to aim to win recruiting in the Coastal, otherwise we are just "competing for the coastal", which is where we have been.

I agree which I think means being in the same neighborhood as Mia talent-wise and separating from the rest.

I hope nobody thinks our talent level over the last 10 years was on par with VT or UNC, even though we had a winning record over the Heels and fared well against the Hokies in recent years. That was mainly due to CPJ/3O mojo.

Talent alone doesn't do it (just ask Miami) but if you're gonna consistently win at the Jimmy & Joe game, it's an essential prerequisite.

We're not where we need to be right now but I know CGC firmly believes we can get there.

I, myself was born at the tail end of December, 1980. If only I had waited a few more days!
Yea, 1990 was a much better year.:) If your parents only knew! The best part of reflecting about 1980 is knowing that Jan Kemp was soon to blow the lid off in Athens. I have yet to here any of my Dog loving relatives mention that Ga played 9 players against Notre Dame that Jan failed that fall but had grades changed by the President so they could play. When she won her law suit, it was right before the 1984 GT vs Ga basketball game and Tech students printed shirts that reflected her victory over Ga. They listed the results like a game score. Jan Kemp 2,500,000 GA Zero! Best dang T I have seen. Maybe this info will make you feel much better about your Birth year.;)

Lite Recap:

All the QBs can throw with Graham being the best imo. The ball comes out his hand different and with more velocity. TO got the 1st team reps and looked confident and able. So did LJ. Graham could be special

Pleasantly surprised by the WRs. Ran routes well and showed they could separate. Camp looked really good so did Peje Harris. Tyler Davis is huge and will be our QB best friend this season.

As everyone know it will come down to the line play this season. Can we hold up enough to give our playmakers time to make plays? DL size is not bad but not where it needs to be. Juanyah, Riq the Freak and the DBs look ridiculous!!!

Position flexibility guy of the day was Austin Smith and Brad Morgan at DT

A few other things I noticed/heard from practice today:

- Practice is very fast paced and hype. Today was the first day with pads on. Players are constantly on the move, every event is a competition with the loser getting called out and having to do 10 push-ups. Lots of former players noticed and commented on the differences. (Not hating or trying to start a debate, just stating facts).

- Players were complaining that they were exhausted and it felt like a game in terms of speed and tiredness which is a good thing. Coaches are working them. And this after several former players commented on how XYZ looks bigger/stronger/faster.

- Coaches were constantly on the players, getting after them if they didn’t give 100% or used the wrong technique. Collins and Choice were the most ruthless and high energy.

- DBs were the best position group imo, had several PBU and picks during scrimmage and 7 on 7s. I will add that Johnathan Dwyer, who coached HS runningbacks, seemed really impressed with Jerry Howard and Jordan Mason.

- We’ve implemented the Big Cat Drill (think Oklahoma but only 1-1) and that got the team fired up. I don’t think we’ve used to do this but it was a very fun way to feature 1-1 drills. Connor Hanson dominated his matchups

- It was really windy today but we seems to have some trouble catching punts (besides JT). Feels like Collins is trying to give lots of people opportunities, specially A backs.

- BJS is staying at LB and as expected, most A backs are now slot receivers. Camp and Dolphins looked really good. It was weird but welcomed look to see us line up out of the shotgun.

I endured practice sessions under a coach who valued conditioning and discovered the physical part of practice was always going to be tougher than a game. He wanted the competitive aspect to be the stress we faced, not the physical part.

One question I had...is KirVonte practicing, and if so how’s he looking? I know we saw pics of him lifting with no brace on his knee, curious if he’s back 100% or still limited. I really think he’s our best returning RB by a pretty decent margin and am expecting big things from him if he’s healthy.

Anyone standing out at DT or too early to tell? Will the DL have enough time to add the size they need by fall camp?

DBs have been the best recruited position over the last several years. I don't mean good for GT...I mean, DBs that can be All-Conference type players. There's next level talent in that group. Will be interesting to see them in press-man with an aggressive defense. CGC takes pride in coaching up DBs like Saban does.

One of the things that will develp over the next year or two is guys who probably didn't fit into CPJ's system become stars because they fit better in the new staff's system. Much like Sean Bedford who was a scout team DL for Gailey, but a 2 year All ACC OL for CPJ.
