Bret Bielema brought suck to a whole new level at Arkansas:vomit: No Way No How;)

He had no losing seasons in 7 at Wisconsin, and by Tech standards many top notch seasons. Out of 5 seasons at Arky, only 2 losing seasons. Wasn't Frank Broyles gone as AD by the time Bielema got to Fayetteville? He may not have had a long leash. Lots of coaching turnover in the SEC West. The ACC Coastal isn't quite the SEC West and I think that Bielema could rule the roost in our division.

Great points you make(y) Frank Broyles retired in 2007 when Houston Nutt was the head coach at Arkansas.

Johnson does not have an expensive buyout comparatively speaking, and to say we are in financial restraints and then to turn around and ask for more resources for recruiting is contrary to one another. The best resource for recruiting will be a better recruiting head coach.

If we have to pay him $1 it will be to much in light of what occurred with the Hewitt debacle. You are right in saying that the best resource for recruiting is a better recruiting head coach however the cautionary note of Ron Zook at Florida should be noted. Coach Zook during his time at Florida was a born salesman. He could sell sand to an Arab. His recruiting bona fides had been established under SS who had the good sense to keep him focused primarily on recruiting and special teams after a short experiment as defensive coordinator. The Gator faithful thought that he could recruit his way out of any trouble he might encounter due to his lack of good sense and propriety but alas top ten recruiting classes could not overcome foolish stunts like getting involved in a brawl between some of his players and a fraternity (he actually led a group of players down to the fraternity house and hollered at the brothers inside) Notably he lost to Ole Miss and Mississippi State which was deemed unacceptable and he was given the heave ho in the middle of the season no less. His recruits formed the basis for Urban Myers first national championship it should be said in his defense.

If CPJ is fired before the 2019 season he'll be paid a prorated portion of 1 million plus 2 million to cover 2019 and 2020. This is pretty darn reasonable:cool:

It is reasonable but not the norm in today's frenzied salary race. What is Bobby Petrino's buyout? Something like $11 million? Nonetheless, I do not know if we can afford even this amount given the buyouts we are currently paying. Does someone know if the buyout for Coach Hewitt is the last one or are there others we are on the hook for?

Even as down as southern has been its out recruited him. And that is with no limitations relative to his peers.

Really the only true option is Luepel if you want to see immediate results ( he'd probably keep woody too), barring scott frost getting canned after one year for some reason.

A truly better option would be for Paul to be able to go spend on an OC and see what happens for the rest of his contract. A HC in waiting kind of thing for woody or the OC. Give him 600k let him see what he can find.

Maybe someone like

A True QB coach to coach QB mechanics and pocket stuff, let candeto coach option and b-back stuff and then he has a package of formations he works out of. Paul calls the plays still from the sideline or relays his.

Move sewak to offensive analyst to make room. How much of a headache would it be to deal with paul johnson calling option game and someone else entirely calling the passing game. And since its still the run and shoot, you aren't doubling up on your receiver concepts.

No head coach GT hires will get instant results:rolleyes: Going away from the option offense means complete rebuilding job which could last 3-4 seasons;)

In this age of social climate defining success you might want a Lane Kiffin for at least a temporary shot of wind. At least when you seem to be sailing against the tide. Also: toss overboard all the cannons and all the food.

Well, it would sure liven up the scene around here. He did a great job at Alabama breathing life into a moribund Crimson Tide offense but man Coach Saban got to where he could not stand him. You could see that in the way Saban would look at Kiffin while they were on the sidelines. It must have been a tense working environment for sure.

People need to realize if you look at paul johnson in a vaccuum here is what you get before he came to tech

you have a coach who was

107 - 39
45-29 as Independent at navy
2 FC championships in 3 appearances
2 and 2 in bowls
Appeared in the playoffs every year he was in the FCS
38 game regular season winning streak.
1 losing season at Navy in his first year otherwise 10 straight winning seasons at all levels.
While at southern out recruited the country relative to his peers ( classes were ranked like today he'd probably have the number 1 class every year but 1997)
Managed to get an uptick in navy recruiting as well.

This is what we hired and did not support at all due to a bad AD. Expecting a miracle coach to come in here that is more qualified than johnson was is foolish at best unless you are planning on giving him what he needs to win.

By comparison Coach cutcliffe's head coaching record
44-29 before coming to duke, but he did win a NC with Tenn as a coordinator ( johnson also has one of these in the 3rd year of a programs existence inventing his own offense) Notice olemiss only played 11 games in 2007 for some reason) so basically barring a win or loss same record as head coaches at the D1 level and about the same success rate one great year at schools that had traditionally not been very good.

Now Cutcliffe took the job at duek after beign told he would have buy in, duke began immediately fundraising for a stadium renovation and locker rooms.
but cutcliffs first 5 seasons?
4-8
5-7
3-9 - renovations begin
3-9
6-7 BOWL

this would have got him fired at most places. but duke had no expectations.

In 2013 cut started building a giant recruiting staff and in 2016 duke landed the 6th best class in the acc ( we were 11th and ever year prior we were always above duke, and always beating them)

Institutional support is everything when you have a good coach. If you don't give it you get bad results so whatever happens that has to be our mantra going forward.

Ok but your boy can't even recruit at APP state with no restrictions relative to his peers hows he going to do here.

If we had a new coach next year he'd have James Graham. As for an H-back for satterfields offense we have some smaller OL that could fill that roll or we could use Jordan mason there.
Right now we also have 2 Dual threat QB's committed in addition to Graham. Jordan yates is ranked 20th overall DT and Demetrius Knight is ranked 25th.

Graham was ranked 17th. We got some big boys on the O-line too that could shuffle around and probably play a zone scheme easier than our current ( because they are easier).

One more time, what scheme and when has Tech brought in hoards of 4-5 star skill players? Do you want to compete against the Clemsons, GAs, Bamas etc for the same 4-5 stars players they're after?

Yes - it'd be nice to compete with those teams. There's an ice cube's chance in hell of doing that now.

Do you want to keep having seasons like this one? 'Cause that's what more of CPJ or another option coach will bring us. Complete, total mediocrity and irrelevance.

Is that what you want?

If we have to pay him $1 it will be to much in light of what occurred with the Hewitt debacle.

The hell does that even mean? The Hewitt buyout is almost all paid anyways and what we have left is small. The Hewitt buyout has minimal impact on any decision we make now, and if it does then we should save money by not paying Johnson 3 mil a year to miss bowl games. Not sure the point of the ron zook tangent you went on. You can find examples of every type of head coach that was terrible and if that is your view then you're just trying to find reasons to keep a failing coach out of fear that something new won't work.

My concern with LJ is the constant injuries and the fact he’s now behind 2 guys TO and JG next year. I worry can he hold up in this offense and how likely is it he transfers?
I suspect at quarterback, no one is behind anybody for next year...it's wide open for CPJ to make his choice just as he did to our suprise with TQM. It is clear that TO, JG and LJ are super athletic, so that is exciting. TO seemed steps faster than TQM and should have been put in earlier since it was clear TQM was hurt and limping from an injury sustained earlier in the game...

I’m with you. GT needs a guy like that.

At this point, I would support Lane. When UT was going through it's search, the reaction to Lane was NFW, then, Only If There is No One Else, then, Keep Him on a Tight Leash, and finally ... we are so bad, we need someone who can energize the fanbase.

Hiring Alvin Neumann, Rocky Vito, or any other unheard of coach is going to signal the fanbase the program is dead. I think you need something exciting.

Is Duke sports run by an "athletic department" or an "athletic association"? It matters because if it's a department of the school, then yes ... institutional support is needed. Tennessee for example, is a department of the school. If it's an "athletic association", then ... athletics is more or less on its own. Support is to be generated from the fanbase along with donations, etc.
