Duke Postgame

This one is really frustrating to me. We are so inept on offense it is almost head scratching. I think we stink on defense as well. It isn't because we don't have talent, it is because our best tackler is a freshman (Gray). I don't see how we have seniors that arm tackle and take bad angles.

I warned about Cash leading up to the game, a player like that can make our offense look terrible, and we barely blocked him the whole game.

Some stats that make you want to pull your hair out...

GA Tech had 316 Yards of Total Offense and Duke had 279 Yards of Total Offense.

GA Tech had 16 First Downs to Duke's 11 First Downs.

GA Tech had MORE Yards Rushing, AND More Yards Passing than Duke.

GA Tech had an advantage in the Time of Possession by holding the ball for 35:35 to Duke's 24:25.

GA Tech had 2 Turnovers, Duke had 3 Turnovers.

GA Tech had 1 Penalty for 5 Yards and Duke had 4 Penalties for 35 Yards. There was one "NO CALL" on one of our 4th Down plays at the end of the game where Duke's defender was CLEARLY offsides, and we were held that would have given us an automatic 1st Down. HUGE play of the game by the refs in my opinion. PJ should be PO'd.

GA Tech LOST the game by 14 POINTS.

I think it was obvious that Special Teams contributed directly to those 2 TD's (KO returned for a TD and a Punt Returned to our 1 Yard Line that was run in for another TD). We also snapped the ball over our Punter's head, who ended up throwing an Incomplete Pass (it should have been Intentional Grounding at the point he made the Pass and not brought back to the Original Line of Scrimmage).

It was also obvious that our Offensive Line was totally dominated and had they made a couple of key blocks along the way, we had a chance to make some key 1st Downs and Justin would have had more time to make some passes to open receivers rather than trying to throw under pressure, running for his life.

Bottom line is we had a chance to win the game late, down six, when we intercepted the ball with time to score if we made a drive. Our offensive line didn't do a very good job and Justin was blindsided and he fumbled, giving Duke the ball back with a chance to make their cushion score. Had our Special Teams play been decent BEFORE then, like not allowing the KO Return for the TD, we could have actually had the lead and PJ may have kicked a FG earlier instead of going for that 4th Down where Duke was Offsides and didn't get called, and if we went up by 4 instead of being down by 6, there's no telling how the Duke QB would have reacted as poorly as he was playing.

Uh noooo......but it sure doesn't help when the defensive line fires off the same time that you do. You see...that's why teams vary their snap count. To give the offense and more importantly the offensive line the jump on the defense. I thought this was pretty much common knowledge.
Then explain to me why not changing the snap count was not a problem against Clemson,UGA, and Mississippi state that have much better d-lines than Duke.

Are you disputing the validity of a varied snap count in football ? If so then I can't help you.

I'm fairly young. They hear it at school from middle school and up. Tired of everyone making that excuse. GTMD was being a passive aggressive jerk and I called him out. It's just a word.

None of the above is an excuse for the crass and classless language you used. Grow up.

Calling the same play 5 times in a row is beyond stupid.

That never happened ball.

No I'm not doing that I think we should vary the snap count.I'm just saying that pj has never varied the snap count and we pushed some very big and talented d-lines all over the field last year.My simple question was how come it wasn't a problem against Clem,Uga,and Miss St last year.

So you agree but you still want to argue. (y)

I am a huge PJ fan and I think he will get the ship righted but that doesn't change the fact he has been out schemed and out coached 2 weeks in a row. One positive from the game was I think we found a receiver who will fight for the ball when it's in the air in Ricky juene.

If our guys being unable to execute is being out schemed....whatever.

Not saying CPJ doesn't deserve criticism. He does. But it's not being out schemed. It's a lack of having guys prepared on game day to execute our scheme. Some of that is first year player mistakes. (Cheese was a lot more right about that than I was.) But it damn sure ain't the whole problem.

There are a lot of things frustrating about the game today. Probably the most frustrating thing for me is how our defense got pushed around early. Why? We showed for over a half of football that we could pretty much stuff them. Why did we come out so flat and let them push us out of our gaps and downfield 4 yards after contact, before getting our bearings once it was a two score difference? We seem to have a focus problem. Are we already pressing? Are we tight? I am not blaming the defense for the loss. This was a team loss, all around in all phases. However, Duke looked like they could be shut down today.

Also, I hesitate to even bring this up because it sounds so bad, like excuse making, but are we having trouble deciding what cleats to wear? This is the second week in a row that our opponents appeared to have better footing than we did. What is up with that? On a wet track it is absolutely essential to have the right cleats. We just seem to slip and slide while they get off the line well and make cuts. I see our guys getting up from a pile and their cleats don't look that long to me. Did anybody check the weather? Do we even have the right gear?
Agree on the defense Boomer. P.J. and KeShun both attributed the slow start to being too amped up and needing to settle down. KF said they need to get in the zone faster. I did think we took it to Duke once that happened and we pushed 7 and 8 guys in the box. Should have started doing the latter from the get-go also.

Learning curve is too big for a freshman to thrive in or offense. Which again falls on PJ for not balancing out the classes better. We will be in the same situation in 4 more years

paul is being outschemed on top of other things. If your guys are not prepared on gameday to execute our scheme, to the guess or direction of what you think the D will do...you are outschemed, outcoached as well.

Duke ran a super aggressive D front that we did not adjust to. So did ND. We didn't run our base plays well against. And we didn't have a counter that seemed to work. Part of this is simply poor play. Part of this is poor play due to not being prepared. Part is inexperience on the edges making paul call a more basice playset....And part of this is simply getting out coached/schemed. BTW, its 8 quarters of this. This is not new. its 2 straight games.

its not just being outschemed, which is your point for sure. But that is a part of it.

teams are selling out against the option run more than they ever have because 1 - they don't respect a spit our WR 2 - we haven't made them pay because we can't block and 3 - I think I am seeing a pure weakness in our scheme being exploited by poor play and good D scheme....so its all those things.

but damn when you watch the tape we should have torched duke through the air. We just didn't know how to block a blitzer.

CPJ did not have an answer for ND or Dukes defensive schemes. He usually makes great in game adjustments but the last 2 weeks he just seems to be doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. I know CPJ has forgotten more about football than I will ever know but IMO he has not called a very good game 2 weeks in a row.
