Others can add deeper insight into a lot of questions, but it’s been quite a while since the NCAA tournament was a yearly event for us, even when we regularly got “burger boys” regularly

Not really… from 2000-2010 we averaged a NCAAT appearance every other year under Hewitt, and that was built off extremely consistent appearances with Cremins. Getting to the NCAAs 4 or 5 times over a 10 year period is really not that much of an ask, and was pretty much the standard here until Gregory. Un-coincidentally there was a lot of NBA talent on Cremins’ and Hewitt’s teams. Something that has really disappeared since getting to the tournament has become unachievable.

I think too many had higher expectations than they should have for this past year, but think it's also fair to say the W/L record is lacking.
Wishes were horses post, but if Howard doesn't go down with the ankle for a time, I think the team continuity would be there sooner and we'd have a modest winning record. More competitive out of conference and slightly over .500 was what I was looking for in the preseason.

Yes. I am responsible for it all. Losers lose.
You're responsible for your own expectations. If they're not met, that's on you.

Have you considered joining another fandom? Perhaps become a Kentucky fan? That might solve your problem.

I’m gonna miss watching Usher and Devoe play.

I missed the Pitt game (sorry). Is Devoe still looking for his first dunk?

We’ve got some winnable games coming up. Syracuse today, VT Wednesday (ok, that will be a rough matchup but we’re due and I’m going with that), ND Saturday, Clemson and BC next week.

Sure we know that, but that doesn’t explain all the programs in the country. Atlanta area is loaded with talent. Some families do care about what educations can do for life past BB. Accepting poor performance as an inevitability is a cop out.

I mean, there's a vast chasm of difference between 'explaining' poor performance and 'accepting' it.

Yeah…before there 4-5 complaining *** trolls got here. Grumble, grumble, grumble, Pastner sucks, grumble, grumble, next year is doomed, grumble, grumble, grumble.

You gotta admit, even when I was a complaining complainer at least I did it with a level of gentlemanly creativity. Or am I remembering that wrong?

You’ve never been a complaining complainer, you’ve just complained on occasion. You and I have always agreed on direction, but you’re able to state your position in a civilized manner.

Seriously, I’m not going to castigate anyone for not being as optimistic as myself, or not seeing things the way I do, but I’m also not going to allow a bunch of uninformed trolls spout a bunch of nonsense and not get called out.

The situation we find ourselves in now is to me full of contradictions

I understand the jaundice regarding NBA level college guys not wanting to spend their time in hard classes, but I don't believe that ALL the guys from 20-150 (pick your range) ALL believe they are sure fired NBA guys and don't want to bother with an education. I have known maybe 10 guys in this range and there is a major diversity of those who want to use BB for the best education they can get and those who want to avoid classes at all costs (and most of those quite honestly couldn't do the legit classes). Point being the absolute statement about recruits avoiding academics doesn't wash (at least with me).

We have been able to get several players in this sweet spot for a get old stay old strategy - whether by HS recruiting or portal (personally I don't care which) - including Devoe, Usher, Coleman, Banks, etc. So it can be done. The issue is we don't do it enough or consistently enough. You have to be consistently getting a stream (1-2 per year) of these kind of guys at the positions you need to have a tournament level, legit ACC type of team.

As for the money bags, the guys who are not into classes for sure are into money bags. We lose on both sides. Again though, I know guys who are looking at BB as a tool to get the best education more than the biggest bag. I don't know how GT plays the NIL game to help offset the bags now. I hear there is a group of alumni putting something together but no idea what it is. I do know UNC has an NIL staff that puts together offers for guys coming in - hope we are doing the same. I am blind here but would be disappointed if we are not trying to play the game aggressively - and this is beyond the deals I have seen for Devoe which are nice but not game changing - at least to my knowledge.

I am OK with not getting the top 20 or so guys who really do have NBA aspirations. I just continue to believe there is a pathway to a top half/some years quarter of the ACC and a consistent tourney team with what is available to us.

It's not an acceptance of poor performance, it's the reality of peaks & valleys in performance because of some inherent disadvantages GT faces.

I think too many had higher expectations than they should have for this past year, but think it's also fair to say the W/L record is lacking.

We're going through a valley that needs work on several aspects. Maybe we face another valley next year. Maybe we start climbing towards another peak.

Either way the medium to longer term expectations should take those disadvantages in to account that they are extremely challenging to overcome.
How do those disadvantages impact our football program where you have 6 times more scholarship players? Will the valleys be longer as we are in now? Or is basketball different than football on this issue?

I don't spend time analyzing our football program, but in a way your answer is within your own question.

With more players available in football, there should be a higher probability that someone develops & steps forward.

Basketball has significantly different dynamics from football.

Agree, just need more consistent peaks and higher, Sweet 16 and Final Four peaks
