I think I've been all over the place on this one, but I'll defend him in principle. When you're trying to instill your culture, I don't think you can back off of what you said or make exceptions, especially not when you're just getting underway. I think he is banking on the long term benefits of this policy outweighing any single play or game. And honestly, I dunno if it's as cut and dried as it seems to us. Kicking can be a fickle thing and we don't see what is going on in practice. Don't get me wrong. I yelled at my tv on that one, but benefit of the doubt granted on my part.

I do think CGC is gonna drive ya'll to drink, though. Unique guy.

Placekickers....everywhere...are weird on not like any other football players. They really are not expected to block, or tackle, or run fast or catch anything or do 99% of the things the rest of the players do (and vice versa). Plus, they are usually kinda weird guys as well....

Let them have their own rules....

I mean the devil is in the details. We have no idea what happened in practice and maybe Wells had a really bad attitude or something. I'm still giving the benefit of the doubt until I have reason not to.

If you have Butker and King on the rosters...and Butker sits on the bench half of practice and and puts the KO out of the end zone, and Wells goes all out in practice but can barely manage the 15.......you start Wels becuse of culture? What, a culture of losing?

We are in violent agreement. I am saying Collins is, imho, wrong to hold kickers to the same rules and standards as everyone else on the team......just mho....so, if Butker is a gamer, then to heck with the practice results...until Butker (in your example) stops performing.

My issue then, why was Wells on the ATL chart? If he had subpar practices, then don't put him on the ATL chart.

Something isn't smelling right on this whole ATL thing all of a sudden.

ATL means eligible to play. It's not that Wells wasn't eligible to play, it's just that King earned at a bare minimum the first crack at a FG. I bet we would have seen Wells if we had to try another one.

On the flip side, if you are making exceptions right off the bat, to one of your most sacrosanct rules, what message do other players get from that? Luckily, it didn't hurt us and I have to believe there was a good reason. Would have been a tough kick for either guy. My preference would have been not to try it.

FWIW, Wells was, in fact, above the line this week, but I guess only to be used if King couldn't go. If we had additional FG chances, it would have been interesting to see what happened. My guess is it would have been considered "point made", King got the chance he had earned in practice, and we'd have seen Wells.

That flies in the face of what most posters on here claim, being that the coaches will always play the player that gives us the best chance to win. CGC gambled on a kicker that has proven to be less than reliable in game situations to build his culture. If not for the forced fumble his gamble would've bitten him in the butt.

To be fair to King, he kicked that one farther than I've seen Wells kick: had the distance. Just missed it by half the endzone. I'm just saying it isn't all that far fetched to think King has shown a stronger leg in practice. My decision would have been not to try a low percentage field goal there with either kicker.

No, just a little poop storm on a head coach.

You play to win the game, not to try really hard in practice.
Yeah there is plenty going to the coach, but people actually said that King had no business kicking field goals, that it is impossible that he out kicked Wells in practice, and that he sucks. Some of the same people that attacked others for "throwing players under the bus" are doing it themselves. Just find it ironic.
