I think we are probably overthinking this. CGC probably told King he earned the right to kick xps and at least get the first FG attempt. It was a low percentage attempt for either kicker.

Maybe some think specialists should be exempt from "competition is king" and "how you practice is how you play". CGC does not. I still wouldn't have tried a 50 yarder, but I understand the thought process.

Every coach has some stubborn traits that drives fans nuts. It is going to be a fun decade around here because CGC has some ideas that go...against the grain.

So did the guy who went for it on 4th when the book said punt.

I don’t know if 50 yards is beyond Wells’ range or not. That’s normally a no-man’s land part of the field where you usually only gain about 15 or so yards from punting it, so you have to go for it or try a field goal.
If he’d punted it and it went into the end zone, he’d rightfully get called out for it. If he went for the first, he’d probably get called out for that, too.
The only way you look good as a coach from that yardage is to not end up there.

I don’t mind the ATL thing but IF you allow that to take president over on field performance I have an issue. You don’t reward a kid for a good week in practice if your regular player is 100%. Now, Wells could be injured or something else could be going on that we don’t see.

Practice IS on field performance.

Earn it - not based on last year when this staff was not here, but by what you do now!

I would usually agree with this.......but we have a damn good punter.

Past performance by both of them. That doesn't mean that Wells couldn't have come back this year in a way not as good as last year. But he looked fine against Clemson, though with only 2 attempts, and the fact that King can't kickoff past the 20 doesn't speak highly of him overall. Yes, I know Wells has not done any kickoffs, but unless he has just totally gone to pot since last year, I don't see how King could possibly beat him out for XP's and FG's.

New and competent staff. The "past" means nothing. It is what you are committed to now.

Eh. Hard to ask Harvin to pooch it from there. Most likely would have gone into the endzone and killed his net average. Going for it on 3rd and long when you cant pass is tough. And we had zero chance of making the FG and we all knew it.

Worrying about someone's stats is foolish. If the FG kicker doesn't have the leg for the distance, you are better off taking the risk of starting them on the 20 or deeper instead of at the 35. If the kicker has the leg, then it is worth the shot.

Yeah. Of 3 bad options, I probably would have pooched it.

Thats maybe the silliest thing i have read in a while. The whole reason tobias started was referenced by collins how he played vs VT. USF last year etc. of course he knows his stats and in game results. Just like he knew about harvin
Well then Walker will be the guy this week!!

Well, just to heat this up I think Wells is better.....but in this logic, and here it goes....Tobias Oliver should be our starting quarterback. He is the most athletic, strongest and proven.

Its why he started clemson no doubt. But in this system for what is being asked I think his best position is not qb. Imo graham has the tools but is behind in checks and total command. Lucas has more command but just is eh.

We are truly in qb purgatory

I would have thrown a semi-hail Mary trick play where you just let them catch it and tackle them for a 30 yard interception and let them start inside their own 10. 90% of the time players trying to defend a ball they think is legitimate for a long throw will catch it and not bat it down...they think they can get a big runback

I loved this idea, but then, I was like, your own guys are gonna try to catch it. Well in that case you get a first and goal. So maybe it's brilliant. Unless you give up a 90 yard pick 6. Then you are fired. Lol. Probably a turnover on downs is the most likely outcome, so may as well actually try to convert it.
