To me, the defensive staff, including CGC, has proven they know how to coach D - at times, due to the lack of front 7 depth/size/speed, we will not look good, but we did look good most of the day due to a poor offense we were playing against, but again, our D coaches are proving they know how to coach D. They tackle well, and for the most part, are where they need to be, and as always, they are giving max effort.

The jury is still out on Coach P. But, I think it is too early to make a definitive negative opinion statement - the O line is really not what it needs to be for the O we want to run. I still think running a few more 3-option principles from the gun with both Graham and Oliver in the game could be a great counter punch at times. I realize we are also trying to recruit players on the O side that want to see something different than that, but they have to know at this point, we can't do what we want to do without more of them signing with Tech.

Lol. That was bullet throw that need more air
So it wasn’t catchable?
Edit: I never said the throw was a perfect NFL caliber throw, I said “was not a bad throw”. Don’t misconstrue what I’m saying. It could definitely have been a better ball, but it was catchable.

Defense:

(1) PASS RUSH - This is the biggest pass rush I can recall GT having in a game since Attaochu played. Granted USF is supposed to suck at protection, but for the past several years teams have had forever to throw the ball.

(2) RUN D - Really nice to see how well we stopped the run today.

(3) SWARMING DEFENSE - Definitely snuffed out some plays that could have hurt us. Most notably when their dual threat QB reversed field a lot of white shirts were there to stop him. Also recall hustling to the ball to get the stop on USF's FG drive.

(4) TACKLING - Generally tackled well.

(5) BIG PLAYS - The coverage gaffe and letting Blake Barnett loose for a 48-yd run sucked. But still better than game one. Not great but not awful either.

Overall: B. USF shot themselves in the foot a bunch. Still, the defense is coming along and one sees the potential.

Offense:

(1) OL INJURIES - Cooper and Minihan out really hurt us.

(2) PASSING - Protected well at times, and came close to hitting some downfield shots. As expected we still suck at it, however one does see some flashes here and there. But obviously is an adventure. Tipped ball likely was an OL not doing their job to keep the read man's hands down.

(3) RUNNING - Ran well at times but very inconsistent blocking up front. Mason and Oliver run like beasts.

(4) QB ROTATION - This won't be popular, but I don't mind seeing all three kids play. First, the staff is emphasizing ATL, and I think relative to each other these guys are all ATL. You can't just claim to have this policy and then not actually do it. Now, ATL may ultimately be a flop and get you fired, but I am glad to see the integrity of the staff in doing what they said they would do. Second, it builds depth at the position. Like it or not we will do well to win 6 games this year. Let's develop these guys and see how they all do with the lights on. Injuries and bad days happen. If the main guy goes down or plays poorly I will feel better about the other two coming in. Third, in college football these days you see a lot of wildcat and it's really not that unusual to see more than one guy take snaps. Those guys tend to have packages that emphasize their strong points. Just didn't see that much under CPJ because his system requires tons of reps to work.

(5) OLIVER IN THE SLOT - I like it. The kid is an elite athlete so get him on the field. Especially on runs. Also shows the staff is serious about getting a guy like him to the NFL.

(6) PLAYCALLING / OFFENSIVE IDENTITY - Like many I wouldn't have minded seeing Oliver play until USF stopped him, which I think they would have. They certainly did when we were running out the clock. This won't be popular but I am not that worried about offensive identity. We do a lot and none of it particularly well, it is true. However I do think the transition requires some tinkering and figuring out what's going to work this year. Long term I think the basic idea of what we want to do is sound. I just think it's going to be tough for awhile. I do hope to see some consistency coalesce by the end of the season.

(7) SWINGING GATE - Not real crazy about it. Seems gimicky and we haven't had much success with it so far.

Overall: C-. USF gifted us a lot, and we have a long way to go. OL injuries likely affected what we saw today. The trenches matter hugely.

Special Teams:

Punting A
KO coverage B-
KOR B-
FG/XP B-

No big plays given up, overall will go with 'B' since punting happened a lot.

Overall, a win is win and it's good to get this one in the books. Teams that make fewer mistakes often win. USF made a bunch and we didn't. Defense is getting coached up and is a pleasant surprise IMO. Offense is taking it's lumps and looks like a new system with players recruited for another system.

Just my $0.02, but I tend to take a long term view of things.

Absolutely, do you know which play I’m referring to? The Ball was legitimately catchable, and I’m pretty sure even Bedford used the term “Alligator Arms” to describe what he did. I commend Jalen for his outstanding perimeter blocking today, but he could’ve made a more assertive attempt to catch that ball.

Yes the play where Camp was overthrown up the seam on a predetermined decision by the qb with another receiver wide open. There were people to blame on that play as always but Camp isn’t the one by a mile.

Agree with a majority that was mentioned about the O. Still think the playcallimg was off in my opinion. Seemed like we were getting some rhythm then we would call the swinging gate play. Also, need to stop the plays for loss on offense. We aren’t explosive enough downfield to make up for it. Low and off target snaps were causing a ton of issues.

We didn't throw downfield and they were playing 0-1 safeties high on first and second down. I think even if we're bad at it, we need to try and push the ball against that to get them to back off. That will make the running game so much better.
Graham is the only QB that can do that. I totally agree with @Milwaukee, play Graham and let him grow into the offense. Have packages for Oliver at wildcat and let him play a combination of RB/WR.

Also, Jordan Mason is a beast and the defense looked outstanding.

I never said that Camp deserved all the blame, but he could’ve easily made a better attempt at catching the ball. He’s so physically gifted, I wouldn’t have been surprised if he catches the ball and breaks a few tackles.
I see where it may seem like I’m bashing Camp, but I promise you that isn’t my intention.

Out two ol starters really made a thin line super exposed. So i am not as down on them as some yet.

U can see why lucas plays. He is making protection and line calls and checks graham is not and i don’t think oliver is either. Lucas has played one game in his life really. This one. He is basically a freshman. But we need to decide on the identity. I do think the O will slowly get better as comfort arise AND the staff sees live what works and doesn’t. They are learning too about these kids.

Never was worried about the d. We have coaches now and they are young players. But the talent was never as dire as everyone thought and coaching is helping a ton. It makes the waste of our offenses in the past that much more sad

I said preseason its a 4 maybe 5 win team. I have not waivered. Its what we are this year

I don’t think you’re bashing Camp at all. I just see that play a lot differently, and that’s ok. In a perfect world Lucas puts it on him (or the other receiver outside) and he comes down with it. Cheers mate

So far this season:

James Graham is 5-8 for 92 yards, 1 TD, 0 interceptions... 9 rushes for 42 yards.

Tobias Oliver is 3-9 for 65 yards, 0 TD's, 2 interceptions... 20 rushes for 56 yards.

We need Oliver on the field, but James Graham should be the starting QB, IMO.
Those stats don't include this game for Tobias. He had 56 yards going in to the game and ran for more.
