The Official 2020 Color Debate Thread

I don't think people have trouble with the concept. I'm somewhat neutral on this discussion in that I happen to like both the gold gear and the blue gear and I'm not super passionate about needing lots more gold gear out there, though I like to have the option and if given the choice between blue and gold I'll usually opt for gold. But I'm curious how much this is chicken/egg? I think I'm hearing some folks lamenting the fact that it's difficult for us to prove that we would buy more gold stuff if there isn't more gold stuff being made and the retailers don't want to make more gold stuff available until they feel comfortable that more gold stuff would be bought.

It’s available, but (rightfully so) the approach Adidas seems to be taking is the logical one. At least from my perspective of being very familiar with it. The largest variety in Adidas gold GT gear seems to be going to our own bookstore. And that would logically be where you’d want it as a manufacturer, as the GT fans wanting gold the most would be the ones attending games, as well as your own students (even though most of our students and athletes wear blue, at least during the week). Gold is a risky color, so it being primarily where the majority of the people seeking it are is a good strategy. If the sell through on gold outpaces demand in that retail channel, and then continues to do so, I would/will expect it to continue to increase in quantity and variety.

When you have a historically poor seller (GT gear), and your are making it in a historically low selling/low demand color (gold), you’re doubling up on the risk. And you don’t make a bunch of it until you see the demand far outstrip the supply, and keep doing that for a while. Especially not when you have a safe play of putting that gold GT logo on a navy item, that you’re probably already making a ton of, and that sells extremely well anyway.

To be honest, for me the issue is not just what is sold, but where it is sold. I almost never purchase clothing online, because of fitting problems; I prefer to try something on before I buy it, or at least hold it up so I can be sure it is neither too large nor too small. In Augusta, there is virtually no Tech gear sold anywhere. Dicks has some around Christmas time, but nothing the rest of the year. I realize that's due to the market; if the market for any school or organization of any kind is not substantial in a given area, then the retailers just aren't going to mess with it. Getting Tech back to the level of public interest it has had in the past might change that somewhat, but we're nowhere near that point right now in any sport other than golf. So that leaves me with the sole option of buying in Atlanta, and that only in the Fall. Unfortunately, the offerings in the bookstore are seldom what I want, so I am stuck wearing the same old shirts and caps I have had for years. That saves me money (LOL), but I would still like to have some more options.

Yep. Fully understand. That’s why Collins was brought in I believe. The success and rebuilding of GT sports depends probably as much on marketing and making it “cool” again as it does on field performance.

Yeah we the navy jackets now lol

Wear what gear you like. The most important thing is to just wear it and support GT.

We’re getting hung up on shades of color, when there are bigger fish to fry, like closing the massive funding gap between us and our competition.

Let’s get GT Athletics on more solid financial footing first. Then we will have the luxury of fussing about colors.

Most student giveaways are navy based. But you really don’t seem to believe me that most of the students on campus wear navy, IF they are wearing Tech gear at all.
Just please stop acting like everything you say is true. It’s not I’m sorry.

I definitely understand the arguments for why Navy gear is popular, and I get it. However I do think promoting navy gear giveaways at games where the AA should be pushing and promoting fans to wear gold is a huge fail in my book and reflects a direction on branding that I find disappointing. Just my $0.02.

Definitely think that's important, no doubt. But I think we can walk and chew gum at the same time. I think branding is important and worth discussing. Some don't or are fine with the status quo, and that's okay too.

I do like that too. Have always felt our current gold needs to be darker. It’s too much like khaki. I may get that hoodie. But nothing else GT gold will match it.
I ordered one, its not like our golds match anyway. The gold on my hat, two gold polos, and t-shirts are all different, plus I'm generally not wearing multiple gold items at once so its not a concern for me.

Very true about our golds. I can wear it with a white GT hat as stated above, or a blue. Hell, Adidas can’t even match our golds on the same hat!

(Hat I’m wearing today, look at the GT gold vs the gold on the bill...next to khaki pants for comparison)

Um, it is true. Have you walked around campus lately?

Clearly, it’s not true. Those young people I see almost every week walking around campus in all the navy gear, hats, sweatshirts, hoodies are figments of someone’s imagination. Along with all the students when I was in school in the late 90s that made a big deal (positive reaction) and got excited when we wore blue. So are all the people at every football game or basketball game this year, on our own campus, that wear predominantly blue (or any other color besides gold). Just like the Clemson game last night where even in the Callaway Club section, where people paid the most to be there and the most die hard, bleeding white and gold fans should be, gold wasn’t there in any kind of force. Conspiracy I tell ‘ya!

I guess I'm going to kind of play contrarian today...lol. but I totally get why non-students would be wearing navy or gray or black or whatever for a weekday basketball game where many of them are wearing something work-appropriate. Students that are actually at the game (not just walking around campus)....not so much. But it's to be expected when it's (purposely?) not being promoted, and actively undermined imo by navy student giveaways.

I keep forgetting to post these, but this pair of shoes is pretty nice. And if you have any Nike GT gold gear, these match that exactly. “Team Gold” is the main shade that Nike uses for us.

But do we know that it’s being “undermined?” Is there also not a possibility that the student giveaways are being driven what students are actually asking for?

I know it could be what if’s either way, if the students are ok with it and aren’t complaining in any way, is there reason to change it? Again, I’m 41 now, and navy was huge and popular when I was at Tech, so we now have been known as a “blue” team for 20+ years. Could be that we have a whole generation or two of GT fans and graduates that are ok with blue, and may actually prefer it, again, referencing how excited I would see fellow students get when our sports teams would wear blue when I was there.
