How else would this have worked? Nobody was going to call him and say, "Hey Geoff, can you come meet with us so that we can fire you?"

It was clear by CGC's response to the Ken's (I believe) question about his job that CGC knew it was over. He knew. The media knew. Everyone here knew. The internet knew. The rest of it is just noise. It sucks. It's not fun. But, it clearly needed to happen.
Actually, that's kind of how I lost a job before. It was during COVID and I had just travelled to Florida for a vacation and the policy was to get a negative test before returning to work. Before I had my results back, my boss asked me to come to the office. And they let me know my position had been eliminated (due to reduced business from COVID).

Reminds me of my favorite termination story. A company wanted to implement a reduction in force and HR executives flew in with a barrel of pink slips. Before they got there, two engineers are sitting in their office (let's call them Boudreaux and Thibodeux) debating over who should go get coffee. It's Boudreux's turn but he convinces Thibodeux to flip for it. Thibodeux loses and off he goes to the canteen to get both of their coffees.

Meanwhile, the HR execs are making the rounds. As they enter Boudreux and Thibodeux's office, the lead HR guys asks, "Where's Thibodeux? I have something for him." Boudreux quips, "He ran out to get coffee. He should be back in about 20 minutes."

"Can't wait that long. Who are you?" the HR exec asks. "I'm Boudreux."

"Well", the HR guy says, "That's good enough for me. We were supposed to let Thibodeux go, but you'll do. Here's your pink slip. I will change the paperwork later. The officer will escort you out."

While Boudreux is getting his things, Thibodeux returns with the two coffees. "What's up?" he asks ...

"I hate you," says Boudreux. "They came for you and got me instead."

True story.

Wow. Definitely before the day of employment lawsuits! I'd be like "Great. Thanks for letting me know that. I'll take a few weeks off to fish. My lawyer will be in touch." :)

As of Monday, every player on this roster has a 30 day window for a free transfer without having to sit a year because the HC was fired. Key and staff are working hard to keep some big names on the team right now.
So you're saying the "big names" on the team stuck around because Collins was coaching, now because he's gone they're threatening to leave? Changes my opinion of the team for sure if true. I'd have thought they'd wanted to win & have their talents showcased, but maybe we've substantially misread the character of our team? I'd hate to think you're right, but it would explain some things that seemed to have no logical explanation.

Option 1: "I want you to commit to me as your coach."
Option 2: "I want you to commit to all the things that we’re gonna do here to help you be successful as a person, as a student and as a player."

Sounds like we targeted the wrong segment.

Not because he's gone, but because of HOW he's gone. They were not thrilled with having to find out via social media and being strung along for a day.

Well, I do hope someone told them "That didn't go the way we intended. We apologize for not getting it right and for leaving you hanging. We own it and will do better in communicating things that are important to you going forward."

Then if they can't accept that and want to leave then I wish them all luck in the portal....they'll need it.

There's a distinct generational divide here regarding how we were raised and taught how to deal with life's challenges & setbacks.

It was a lot simpler than is being described here. Plenty of schools fire coaches on Saturdays and Sundays.

As for moving on because it's done, that's easy for us to say now. As of right now the coaches are working to keep several big names from doing just that BECAUSE of the way this was handled. That was the point I was making to begin with.
Let em go. "We will win with you or without you." GOL

When you lose your coach, no matter how it was handled, or whether you liked the coach or not, it’s an excellent time to look around and see if the grass is greener on the other side.

To be honest, I’m not worried about transfers off of a team that’s had a ceiling of 3 wins. I’m feeling optimistic that who ever our players are they are going to start getting some quality coaching.

Haha, I can top that.

Bosses call a guy's department into the 'big' office. This was '08 in the financial sector so everybody knows layoffs are comin'. The dept figures this is 'it'.

The guy, let's call him 10gk, is the youngest in the dept.

Sure enough, the bosses inform them they're all laid off. But 10gk's last day will be 30 days after the rest of you geezers. Matter o' fact, the rest of you go get your things. kg01, I mean, 10gk we need you to hang back a bit. Uh, sign some more paperwork.

(Everyone else leaves)

Ah we were just kiddin', 10kg, you're not really laid off. We just needed them to think we weren't just laying them off because they're all old.

True story.

I learned later there were some age discrimination lawsuit rumblings before that. I guess 10gk was some kind o' reverse guinea pig, sacrificial lamb.

10gk got outta dodge fast after that. Talk about faulty 'leadership'.

He was escorted to his car and not allowed to talk to the team. So far the GTAA has not handled this well. There are some initial reports surfacing that a large portion of players and their families are extremely unhappy about the way this unfolded and several are talking about transferring immediately. I have NOT been able to corroborate this beyond the initial source, but that source is reliable.
I hope such reports are untrue or at most exaggerations. Stuff such as that usually is. That being said, if crockery is to be broken, do it now, figure out your new scholarship availability and go hunting. I mean, how much worse could it be? Lose all remaining? Done and done.

As per addressing the team: this is the same guy who spent parts of two years blaming Paul Johnson for everything from fumbles to eclipses and cracked sidewalks, who once claimed to face the biggest rebuilding job in the history of college football. Standing him in front of 85-100 players is asking for a whimper and whine show. But think about it… h-ow many of us get $11.5 million to go away, and then get an escort?

This fraud, by definition, did more damage to Georgia Tech football and the institution's reputation that is going to be very hard to scrub away. If players love him so much they are allowed off campus, so have at it, but the institute has to mover forward now. This minute. As for both hires, Mark Twain covered it: put all your eggs in one basket ... and watch that basket.

I actually have hope for the first time in almost four years.

Timeout. I’ve never heard of this and this makes zero sense for in season firings. If anyone transfers this year in the middle of season they can’t play at another school this year. Whoever plays Saturday will have played 5 games meaning they used the year of eligibility. Basically everyone gets a free transfer already. Is there a link anywhere to this rule? I can’t find one. The only reference I can find that’s even close to this is a rule proposal from 2018 that got wiped out with the new transfer updates over the last 2 years.
