I guess I'll take abuse with you, but after 30 years of A-T donations I quit donating while Bobinski was here. I wrote him a letter--the only one I have ever written to an AD, a point I made clear in my letter--and asked for a response. I didn't get one. If I don't respond to my clients, they fire me. I wasn't going to continue giving money to the GTAA if my 30 years of donations are not worth a few minutes of the AD's time.

I started giving again last year, but at a lower level. I am still in a wait and see mode with Stansbury. It takes a couple of years to sort things out, especially for a guy who is still relatively inexperienced. He will complete his second academic year in May.

If we don't see significant improvement by Stansbury in 12 months, I will reevaluate.

My prediction is that GT and Johnson will reach a mutual parting of the ways after next season. Gregory will be paid off, and Hewitt will be close, so the GTAA can afford the buy out. We'll offer the $2 million, and Johnson will take it. The mistakes of Braine et al will be past us, and the football program will totally be football alumnus Stansbury's--for better or for worse. We will see. I hope he is like Homer Rice, who always kept a list of preferred coaching replacements in his desk drawer.

Legit question. Top 5 engineering schools, per USNews, are MIT, Stanford, Cal-Berkeley, CalTech, & GT. Stanford and Cal are liberal arts universities with top notch engineering programs. MIT and CalTech are more similarly structured in term of academic purpose and course offerings. Of course, they don't play FBS football, so hard to compare to them. We are similar to the Academies in terms of class selection in FBS, but we can recruit well beyond what they can accept in terms of student athletes. Stanford and Cal, and Michigan, to be fair, are similar in engineering academic rankings, but all three offer a wider variety of classes for athletes to take.

Now, I know that a lot of our football players don't major in engineering, but are rather taking the "easier" BA degree track, in a top 40 program. Not many schools are "hiding" their athletes in top 40 academic programs.

So, in a sense, GT is unique in the college football landscape. The real question is how do we make that a strength instead of a liability.

There is merit to what you say. But answer this question: Why is our football recruiting so heavily centered within a radius of 3oo miles of campus? Our basketball recruiting isn't. Our two deep in 1990 shows that it wasn't so locally focused either. For that matter, academics show more geographic diversity than football recruiting, which contributes to the quality of students. Why does this football staff think it can win at a high level while focusing recruiting in a small pond?

Needless to say, I have my opinion, which is that GT isn't Georgia Southern, nor is it the Naval Academy, when it comes to recruiting. Too much of this staff is clueless regarding the product they have to sell, where to sell it, and how to sell it.

Your graphics are exactly what I think of Paul Johnson's 47-46 FBS record over the past 8 years. The GTAA has paid him almost half a million dollars per FBS win over that time frame. Why would a reasonable person contribute to that result? I have to wonder if any other school has paid a head coach so much for so long for so few wins.

From your handle, you must like mediocre food. Your expectations in other endeavors are in line with your food preference.

I have to wonder if any other coach has won big games like CPJ with recruiting classes in the 60's. I also have to wonder if other schools give their HC's more staff, money, facility upgrades ect. I'm sorry but can you name another coach in the country that does as much with less as CPJ?

Half our fan base questions why we don't recruit locally as much as they think we should, and the other half thinks we need to expand our reach. It just goes to show you that no matter what approach the staff takes, half the fan base will hate the decision. But to answer your question more specifically, the area 300 miles around our campus is one of the most talent rich sections in America in terms of HS football talent, so it would make sense that we try to recruit as much of our backyard as possible. That being said, I also see a willingness for our coaches to look outside the SE US for talent as well. LJ came from California. We have a commit, possibly two, from Germany. We've pulled from PA, LA, MD, and HI recently as well. Not to mention Gotsis from Australia.

Again, I agree we'll pull more talent than GaSo and USNA/USMA/USAFA. By virtue of playing in a P5 conference we'll out recruit GaSo, and while our academic requirements are a hurdle, they aren't nearly the roadblock the Academies face. We are a unique school, though, and the point remains, we won't improve 'til we learn to sell ourselves better as the unique option we are.

It's not about sales as much as it is about locating appropriate targets that are suited to the pitch. I don't care how good a salesman you are, you're not gonna sell a horse shoe to a pig.

This is classic chicken/egg. You have t have both. I think our staff does a pretty good job of identifying appropriate targets. I know we lost that WR to Cal a couple of years ago, and I know we've lost several others who value education to other schools as well. Can we do better at identifying appropriate targets? Sure. But we also need to make sure we have the appropriate sales pitch ready for them once we identify them.

I think we do a pretty good job of locating some targets, but not near enough. When our top target turns us down, we need another one to take his place with no to little drop off in talent. There seems to be too big a drop off in our B and C lists. It comes down to man power, there's only so many hours a man can work. The factories with their armies of staffers have us beat.

When you have to resort to personal attack, then whatever your opinion might be doesn't mean a damn thing. And as far as my handle, you obviously do not understand what I tried to get across when I created it. The mutts on the AJC blogs sure understood it and hated me for it. Sorry you don't get it.

If youo think hiring Johnson was a Braine "mistake", you not only should stop donating but demand your money back. Makes as much sense as what you just wrote.

Hey bro, hate to tell you but Johnson was hired by Radokovich. Gaily was Braine's mistake. Johnson will only be going somewhere if he retires. Stansbury is already on the record stating that a lot of the struggles we've faced has been because of the previosu AD tying johnsons's hands behind his back with staffing and support.

Interesting. How do you feel about winning the Orange Bowl under Johnson? How about beating the team in Athens in their own stadium TWICE? What about upsetting #4 Clemson in 2011?

With early signing a couple of days away... I'll ask the question. This is a "Roof" thread. Scattered through this and other threads is the notion that a logical time to "let him go" would be AFTER the early signing period. I'm not asking whether he should or should not stay...or the implications of his contract and all that. I'm specifically interested in the logic of that strategy/timing of firing your DC (or any coach) when/after early signing period starts? I understand he's regarded as good recruiter and we want him to 'bring home' the goods. Assuming that is true... is it common practice to keep a coach through the early signing period for the purposes of landing the recruits he's garnered before firing the guy? If so.. then OK... I guess that's the industry standard. However, if not... it seems like a severely flawed approach. Just keeping a guy around from season's end for another month for that specific purpose would be obvious... and how does that help Ga Tech in the long term? What potential replacement coach would want to come to a program that does that (again... I am assuming this is not the industry standard (timing wise) for firing coaches)? ...and how do the recruits that Roof landed respond?
