What gets CPJ fired or encouraged to resign?

"never had a chance to win at the highest level? " johnson has had 10 years at Tech to win at the P5 level !!!
P5 is far from level. If you divided it into 4 power tiers, where would you put GT? Maybe low 2, but that’s stretching it. We are surrounded by tier 1’s.

I don't think that's the case. CPJ would not do well at a program like Florida or Tennessee. The demands and the expectations are SO HIGH ... that it's impossible to meet for most people. I think he would get tired of the hassle factor really quick. He might do well at a school like MS State, Ole Miss ... where the expectations are more manageable for his style. Just my opinion.

Obviously you're not familiar with Georgia Southern. Small fan base and lower division when he was there. But if you don't win right away, a moving van is sent to your house quick.

I would rather have up and comers(like Scott Satterfield or Jason Candle) who very well could leave if they turn GT around than have a retread who would stay:cigar: If the up and comer head coach turned GT around and left for a higher paying job i would say thanks to him for turning GT around and wish him good luck with his new job;)

While I understand this line of thought, I can not agree with it. The problem with up and comers is you have to keep hitting home runs or you end up scrapping everything and starting over again every few years. If one works out and leaves you, you have to hit another homer to replace him. If one doesn't work out and is fired, you are now under greater pressure to hit a homer on the new hire.

I think you are projecting your view of the world on to everyone else. Paul Johnson would be coaching at Florida if he had the track record to do so and the good fortune to get an offer, just as Mike Leach would be coaching at Texas if those same factors were in play. They are both very fortunate to be where they are at making millions of dollars doing what they love. I'm sure both feel they are capable of doing very well where they are at despite the obstacles they have to deal with. There are obstacles every where. Both these guys have personalities and other characteristics that would not work at a lot of places. So don't feel sorry for them. I'm sure they do not feel sorry for themselves.

Interesting post... not sure I agree with all of it. Keep in mind Florida hired Jim McElwain and Texas hired Charlie Strong and Tom Herman. I am pointing this out because you said "track record"... Leach and CPJ have pretty amazing track records, and both will go down in the Hall of Fame and will be studied for generations to come for their innovation of the game.

I have no doubt that Paul Johnson and Mike Leach, given upper tier talent, would put their teams in position to win national championships at the highest level. They just win, with a lot less.

I see a lot of people thinking we don't put a lot of emphasis on athletics at GT. It's just at GT, the school will keep growing and thriving based on academics and research. For Georgia Southern, football was a lynchpin of their growth strategy. Athletics is important here, but it was dominant at Georgia Southern when CPJ was coaching there, and possibly still is.

I will still be on the side of firing him but I would rather see him leave this year in his own. I doubt he will reguardless of how we finish, I don’t think he would of left on his own even if we would have won 3 games, but no matter how we finish I think it’s time for a change. Dave Aranda, and Brent Venables would be great names to hire but I don’t believe they’re realistic names and that’s why I am all in for Brent Key.

He would take the job and if he made us great again I don’t believe he would leave. He could be the same type of coach and Dabo. Hell of a recruiter, we’re talking about a guy that Nick Saban made room to hire in a already full staff because of his skills, that says something. Great recruiter is what we need to help keep these players in the state of Georgia at home. UGA can’t have em all and there’s to many other out of state schools cherry picking the state. He would keep a lot more the kids home that don’t go to UGA and I believe he would even get some of the guys UGA was after not just what they left for us to get. There’s so many 4 and 5 star guys that we need to get that go to Alabama and Auburn and Clemson and the florida schools and Ohio state, etc.

Dabo had held no other position besides a position coach so saying that’s a knock on key only being an OC 2014-2015 isn’t a good reason not to hire him. He does like Dabo and brings in a really good OC and DC that can also recruit and bring in a good scheme and he does play the CEO role. It works. If he was to bring on Godsey I don’t think it should be for the OC job. I only say his name because I know a lot of people have thrown his name out there.

No matter how we finish off this year we’re not going to get any better than 8 to 9 wins and that’s not going to get us back to being acc champs. A true recruiter like Key will go to these kids houses and sell GT and sell the academic level while also getting to play football. Going pro with a Helluva education. He won’t demand a high salary to begin with. Winning championships begins with recruiting the players to do it and I think he can get that job done along with brining the right staff in to help him do it.

Brining in an alumni as coach doesn’t always work but the other times it does and if anyone from tech can make it happen it’ll be him. He’s fired up and ready to be a head coach and would be thrilled to make it happen at GT and would have the kids pumped to do it.

Yea we would have 2-3 down years and because of the type of players we have it may be a more ugly rebuild than some other schools but it’s going to happen eventually reguardless. He could take the best guys on the team that fit his offensive and defensive schemes and tweak his schemes a little to help them and help the team until his guys are here and then full on to what he wants to do. I respect CPJ and he’s done a well job it’s just time for a change

I don't get the unbridled confidence in the totally unproven Key. Sure, everybody wants the next Dabo, but Dabo is an extremely rare case. And the idea that Key would somehow be a total game changer for our recruiting? And who is to say that just because he is an alum that he would consider this his destination job if a blue blood came calling?

I dunno. I'm not saying we should never consider hiring the guy, but I think you're way ahead of yourself.

I feel very trapped in the middle between the CPJ haters and worshipers in this thread. lol. He has been a good and at times very good coach for us, but his future is a legitimate question after an up and down few years. Also, 80-58 ain't HOF numbers. That said, unless we lose out, I say he stays. Our offensive personnel is well-suited to run his offense next year.

I don't know it like I know UT. Huge fanbase, lots of exposure. Lots of media. You have to win AND finesse all sorts of stakeholders. I have heard from others that UF is the most stressful of all coaching jobs. While I think CPJ could coach UT, I think the media there and the alumni would eat him alive.

Sheesh, I don’t know man. We won the conference championship in 2009.

So if we’d beaten Iowa would you feel the other way? Both of those Tech teams were great, but Iowa was a better team than that Mississippi State team we ran all over. The only thing about 2009 that upset me that much was the loss to Georgia. We were a much better team than they were and blew it.

Iowa’s offensive line won that 2009 game, in my opinion. They totally dominated the line of scrimmage.

The thing is, it's a love or hate kind of thing. There are very few it seems that are right in the middle with CPJ. There are a lot of people that get to a point where once they don't like him or the offense no statistic or bowl win or uga win will bring them back.

It really comes down to can CPJ continue to win and fix the issues that come up. And can the school help get him the resources we need

We could let CPJ go and end up with a horrible season or seasons following or do really well. It's a toss up and it comes down to are we really willing to take that risk, when we have an offense that can be potent when working right ?

I just overall feel like there are schools that are much worse off than we are right now.

If you want to know what Mike Leach would do with a **** ton of talent, look at Oklahoma right now because Lincoln Riley is essentially young Mike Leach. Riley has an advantage that he’s viewed as “starting out” as an Offensive Coordinator for Bob Stoops at OU instead of the years he spent being mentored by Leach at Texas Tech.

Not sure if that's true. CPJ can point to 3,000+ yard passing offenses. It depends on the personnel you have. JT threw for almost 2,000 yards in 2014. The plays are there in the playbook - but you don't call them if you don't have the personnel for them.

Of course he can. Just like Mike Leach ran the ball 30+ times a game at Texas Tech when he had an NFL talent with Taurean Henderson.

Umm, disagree. UGa wins count like triple. Especially when UGa is highly ranked/thought of on the national scene.

Now, producing wins over UGa is another story....we haven't seen many of those and the gap seems to be growing, not shrinking....
