I'm sorry but I can't dislike this enough. I think Key would be a good coach, but if we get to 8-5 or 9-4 this year then I definitely want CPJ back. I want him back if we just make a bowl because CNW has shown improvements on D and I think CPJ deserves the chance to see what he can do with a good DC. We will also be returning a lot of contributors and some of our younger, more talented players will be getting more playing time. Also, Key was a good recruiter at UCF and is a good recruiter at Alabama, but they are totally different animals than Tech. He would probably still bring in good classes, but we would still lose out on players to Clemson, Alabama, Auburn, Tennesse, FSU, Florida and South Carolina. I also hate the perception that it's going to be a 2 or 3 year rebuild once CPJ leaves. We transitioned from a pro style offense to the spread option and we became one of the best offenses in the country. We can easily transition to a spread, Air raid, or Run and shoot. I'm not saying that it will be perfect right out of the box, but I think that we would be ok.
It’s an easier transition to the option vs leaving it IMO. CPJ was left a very good team of guys that exceeded in his offense. But those guys didn’t come to play for that offense. He wouldn’t of got most of those guys. And imo his best team was the team that he didn’t recruit. Recruiting is a huge part of the game. I don’t knock your opinion, there’s a ton of different opinions on here if there wasn’t it would be a terrible forum. But I do agree there is some different offenses that we could transition to that wouldn’t make for a bad 2-3 years. Like I had said, say key or whoever comes in and brings in the right guys and they bring their system maybe one of the ones you named maybe not but whatever they bring they tweak their style enough to work around whatnot they have until their guys are there. Then they go full blast with what they Wanna do and if what they were doing is working keep that and build on to it with he better caliber players they get. Yes every year there is going to be some same names and some new big names that come up for us to go after but I believe a lot of the names that have been thrown around on there that people want Key included won’t be available if we keep waiting and I think this is the year to snag one of these names. And maybe the next coach keeps woody maybe he doesn’t but once again it’s only my opinion but whether we keep CPJ and woody or not I believe that as soon as Satterfield gets a bigger job he’s coming for woody and woody is going.

I would rather have up and comers(like Scott Satterfield or Jason Candle) who very well could leave if they turn GT around than have a retread who would stay:cigar: If the up and comer head coach turned GT around and left for a higher paying job i would say thanks to him for turning GT around and wish him good luck with his new job;)
I can see where you’re coming from. There’s a ton of names to consider and so many people on here have a ton of different names they won’t. All of the names will get better jobs some will be great and we’ll hate we didn’t get em, and some we don’t get will fail and we’ll thank god we didn’t. I enjoy seeing the different names be thrown around and the reasons why the different people want them. I do Believe Satterfield will be at a bigger program next year. If we get him I believe it’ll mainly be so we don’t have to lose woody. But if he ends up somewhere else say UNC I believe he will come after woody and woody will follow.

I’ve said on here before if Satterfield and woody had been at a bigger program together already we wouldn’t of gotten him. But woody got a bigger offer before Satterfield so he took it and I believe he did it knowing Satterfield wouldn’t be far behind and they could rejoin.

2014 jackets >> 2009 jackets, and I honestly don’t think it’s close.

2009 jackets have my fondest memories as a student at Tech, but they were not as good as 2014.
Sheesh, I don’t know man. We won the conference championship in 2009.

So if we’d beaten Iowa would you feel the other way? Both of those Tech teams were great, but Iowa was a better team than that Mississippi State team we ran all over. The only thing about 2009 that upset me that much was the loss to Georgia. We were a much better team than they were and blew it.

I would’nt be so quick to dismiss that Miss St team. They spent about five weeks at #1 and beat Alabama, if I’m remembering correctly.

What happens if CPJ can recruit at the same level of Florida or Florida State, and Mike Leach at the same level as Texas?
Some of that is on them. Not everyone is a big extroverted “rah rah” guy, but that helps build a program.

Ironic. GT has one of the TOP rated offenses in the country. And all we seem to talk about it is dumping it to get something else.

Jeremy Pruitt, UT's coach, made a comment Saturday that he recruited at FSU, UGA(g), and Bama. And of all the players on the UT squad today ... he recognized only 2 that were pursued by major programs. In other words, the talent level at UT was incredibly bad.

That's UT. What makes anyone think that Tech is going to change to a new offense and get anything other than what we are getting now and IMPROVE on what we are already doing.

I don't think it's the offense. It's execution. Improve the defense, hold on to the ball ... and we probably have a pretty competitive squad.

I still wonder what happens if CPJ coaches at Florida and someone like Mike Leach coaches at Texas... those two guys, evil geniuses, never had a chance at the highest level.

Not totally accurate. CPJ said during his time at Tech, he has been offered 8 other HC jobs. The only one he publicly named was Auburn. But, he turned them all down. Said he likes the kids at Tech.

CPJ has one of the best track records around, it’s the offense imo that keeps him from getting the “bigger” job.

I don't think that's the case. CPJ would not do well at a program like Florida or Tennessee. The demands and the expectations are SO HIGH ... that it's impossible to meet for most people. I think he would get tired of the hassle factor really quick. He might do well at a school like MS State, Ole Miss ... where the expectations are more manageable for his style. Just my opinion.

Paul Johnson would do very well at a school like Texas Tech or Utah

+100 this. Switching away from the Flexbone might increase our recruiting rankings marginally. But only because we wouldn't be taking as many underrated athletes who don't fit in the prevailing offenses. It boggles my mind that anyone thinks we can run the same offense as Georgia, Clemson, Auburn and Bama; need the same players, and recruit head-to-head with them...

We have the 12th highest OFEI, with (supposedly) ~50th talent in a 'bad' year. Second best in the ACC. CPJ is the head coach and the D and [awful] ST are his responsibility too, but the idea that the offense is holding us back is absurd.

I also wonder what would happen if CPJ just started calling the A-backs "tight ends" and told people we were switching to a "pro-style, single back, two TE set"...

He could just call them "slot backs" or "slot receivers". That's what they are.

I think you are projecting your view of the world on to everyone else. Paul Johnson would be coaching at Florida if he had the track record to do so and the good fortune to get an offer, just as Mike Leach would be coaching at Texas if those same factors were in play. They are both very fortunate to be where they are at making millions of dollars doing what they love. I'm sure both feel they are capable of doing very well where they are at despite the obstacles they have to deal with. There are obstacles every where. Both these guys have personalities and other characteristics that would not work at a lot of places. So don't feel sorry for them. I'm sure they do not feel sorry for themselves.

Go Jackets!

You're reading into this way more than what the post said. No one is feeling sorry for CPJ that he didn't get to flex his option at the highest level... it's more of a "what if" wonder. CPJ was getting many programs interested in him early in his Tech tenure if I remember correctly, including Auburn.

Its completely irrational... CPJ is a fantastic coach. I am just like the AD sees that. He's going to win 7 games this year, and has a loaded team back next season to win 10 games.

I still wonder what happens if CPJ coaches at Florida and someone like Mike Leach coaches at Texas... those two guys, evil geniuses, never had a chance at the highest level.

"never had a chance to win at the highest level? " johnson has had 10 years at Tech to win at the P5 level !!!
