There are absolutely some 5 stars who care about academics. But not many. And, of those, the ones that are math/science oriented are even smaller. And, it is not like we are the only good school that plays football. There are a lot of highly regarded academic schools that play top level football we are competing with for those same recruits. And even ones like Michigan, Stanford, etc that have world class engineering programs. And it isn’t like Alabama, FSU, UGA, Clemson, etc aren’t also trying to recruit those same kids.

We can get more than we do. And I agree that recruiting is not this staff’s strongest attribute. But I fully believe they are doing their best and have goal to recruit as many good players as possible. That doesn’t make it easy, however, as shown by every single other Tech coach in the last 50+ years.

I think you could still find a way. I think it does start from the top. Lets face it as good of a coach as Dodd was, he was just as bad as AD and that effected recruiting early on. I agree that other top academic schools are also recruiting those same kids and that is where the closing issue comes to play IMO.

That makes for a nice bumper sticker, and I don’t disagree necessarily, but it is a bit of a fallacy to say that all we have to do is believe and try harder. There are 129 BCS schools, and every single one is also trying their best to recruit the best kids and win. Mathematically, 50% of those schools have to be below average.

CPJ is the 40th highest paid head coach. And I am guessing that, when taking our full football staff into consideration, we may be lower than 50th in total staff pay. With that fact, why would you expect us to be better than we are? Just because you want it?

In fact, I am constantly surprised we do as well as we do, and I know for a fact that CPJ thinks we can do better.

I have never heard CPJ use academics as a crutch. I have heard him say that there are guys that can't be recruited to GT because they won't be able to stay in school. I have seen some heralded recruits that came to GT and left within a year because they couldn't handle the academics. I believe that CPJ simply states the truth. He doesn't hide behind "crutches", he doesn't overstate things, and he doesn't imply things that he doesn't come right out and say in simple language. He has also said that other programs(Clemson) has a lot more support staff than GT. If GT had the number of football people that only review high school athletes, GT could recruit more guys nationally that do fit into GT. As I understand it, most of the high school player reviews are done by the coaches in their spare time of 80-100 hour weeks. If you really want GT to find more players who do fit into GT, then you should be donating all you can to the program. My guess is that you don't even have an AT Fund account. Join the Golden Jackets club, get involved in the program, and maybe then I will give a damn what you think. At the moment I don't.
I got out of Tech in '67, and I have been a football season ticket holder, an Alumni Roll Call contributor, an AT contributor (although only through the ticket fee since DRad started that) since I got out. Maybe I have not read enough of what they send me in the mail, but I am sorry to say I don't know what the "Golden Jackets club" is. Please fill me in.

I do but I think we can be a whole lot better at recruiting than what we've been. What I think and what I've heard Tstan is doing is getting more money and getting extra staff for recruiting. To me that shows Tstan thinks we can get better than what we are right now. But I'm just a "kid" so what would I know?

There IS a reason. It's called the BOR, and they wouldn't have a hard time at all denying it, since they always have.

I think CPJ out coaches his resources, out recruits his resources, and out performs his resources.

GT is a special place and not for every SA. Please do not mistake that sentence for contentment...but it is a fact.

I've not met one GT fan who is content with 6-7 wins a year and I'm certain CPJ is not content with 4 wins currently.

When CPJ came on board one of the first things he said was we have to get rid of any excuses and I don't think he's making any. However, the academic rigors of GT absolutely have an impact on recruiting. Stating that fact isn't the same as being making excuses and being content with the results.

So Jacob, PJ has been the most successful coach at GT since Dodd (unless you want to call Ross more successful for 1 glorious year), what do you change that would make the next coach more successful? And don’t say “get a better coach”. We’ve proven that route doesn’t work.

When have we proven that?

But you did imply the lack of success in recruiting was due to a sense of content on the coaching staff currently in place.

And you are now pointing to improvements that can be made in recruiting that are outside the purview of the coaching staff.

That's why you are getting some push back.
