Oh I can handle it, I've got thick skin, it's not like he's offended me or anything, and I'm sure the kids aren't really bothered greatly by it, I just don't see the point in being rude in the media or throwing your players under the bus in public, I doubt it helps shed good light on GT for publicity or recruiting. Like I said, it just takes no extra effort to be cordial and answer questions in a kind way.
Throwing players under the bus ??? GIVE ME A BREAK. There is a BIG difference between pointing out the failures of a specific group of players to execute properly and actually calling out an individual player for screwing up. That latter action would be throwing someone under the bus, and you have NEVER NEVER NEVER heard Paul Johnson call out a specific player for doing something wrong.

My issue with this is, Nick and Bill don’t act that way because of their pedigree, they do it because it’s their personality. No difference than what CPJ does, I’m not saying I like it(it bothers me at time), but if it’s wrong when CPJ does it then it’s wrong when Nick and Bill do it. BTW isn’t CPj friends with both of those guys? Also if you notice, imo a lot of the times CPJ acts like that is when it’s questions being asked the reporters know good and well he won’t answer, or it’s comes across as if they are baiting to get a specific answer instead of just asking something straight up.
I agree that it probably is their personality, and I didn't mean to say that Nick or Bill were right in acting this way (they both annoy me too) I just think people will shrug it off in the media and it won't effect their recruiting because they win championships.

WHY ARE WE YELLING? "The players can't stay in their lanes, do you think we taught them to do this?" The post game interview was too much to me. That in my opinion, is throwing players under the bus. Placing blame on 18-22 year old kids is in my opinion ridiculous. I'm sure that isn't a popular opinion, but I don't think it's necessary.

I am not yelling; I am simply emphasizing certain words. He didn't place any blame on the kids, other than saying that they did not do what they had supposedly been coached to do. He blamed it on the decision (by whomever) to put 5 freshmen in there in a critical situation requiring more experience and for the coaching obviously involved in preparing (not preparing) them for such situations. He also included himself as part of the blame in that decision process. I have no problem whatsoever with anything he said, and I doubt the kids do either.

Agree to disagree. I thought it could have been handled better. I do agree that I doubt the kids in the locker room have a problem with it. I like CPJ for the most part and I'm sure the players love him, but perception in the media is important and being a good interviewee could only help recruiting and publicity for us.

I don’t see them as “kids”. There are “kids” their age that are police officers, fire fighters, and are overseas getting shot at while serving in the military. What these young men are going through is a cake walk by comparison.

I’m sure CPJ treats them better than I got treated when I was a “kid” playing pee wee and midget football. I clearly remember more than one coach calling us every name in the book...there was no word that was off limits. Oh how times have changed.

Complete agreement. When I hear him gripe about OL , or ST , etc. I think he is blaming the coaches , or lack of one for ST, and even himself, more than the players.

The perception "in the media" is considerably higher among those in the media who know how to ask intelligent questions. From what I hear, he is highly respected among those members of the media.

He wears his feelings on his sleeve. When he is annoyed by a question, it shows. When he is pissed about losing, it shows. We would be complaining ( some of us , at least ) if he acted like he didn't care as much.

Or even 50 !! 1973 grad = 68 yo
Got you beat there, but it's generally a little hard for me to stretch it out as far as you did. However, I worked as a volunteer in the 70s in a Christian organization, and I still keep in touch with some of those "kids," who are in their 50s now, and I have to admit to still calling them "kids" too.

Behind closed doors at practice or in the locker room coaches cuss the players up and down. Saying in the media that you don't know why the players are doing something because they weren't taught to do it that way is a separate situation. He could handle himself better in the media and everyone knows it. I like CPJ, that doesn't mean he's perfect. He could easily improve in his relations in the media and the way he answers questions. In public don't blame anyone besides yourself. Enough said.

Yep, I would definitely be complaining if he appeared not to care. But his reaction to stupid questions and bad game results shows that he DOES care, and I like that in him.

I have come to believe that 25 is adulthood. I know you can fight and die at 18. I know you can drink at 21. I know some people are mature at 16.

That said, for the majority of people I've known, around age 25 is when you start thinking like an adult. When people start thinking long term, and making decisions for the future, rather than for now. When I'd trust people to make good decisions and me not have to worry.

+1 Well said. I like CPJ, but he's not good with the media, and that's a shortcoming. Part of his job is to play kissass with the press, like it or not.

He is old school in his mannerisms, and to most of us who are also old school, it doesn't matter at all. In fact, for the most part, I find it refreshing and funny.

what pisses me off about this radio show, is he talks about how clear it was too many freshman were on sp teams covg. Jeez man. What is he looking at game week then? If there are 6-7 on that team, and thats the plan, why wasn't it fixed prior to going to USF. Its classic reactionary correction. For me, its the first time I am literally sitting back wondering wtf he is doing during the week. Is it just offense? where it takes 2 returns for a TD to then focus on the makeup of the covg unit, realizing that there are like 7 freshman on it (or whatever number); then saying thats too many we gotta fix it.

I could have told you 2 weeks ago, its too many and would have had it fixed before game 1 if I was paid to do this. This loss. Is direct on him. He is not overseeing enough of the team and honestly, he kinda admits it. Which is sickening.

Its one of a few times I am extremely frustrated at the lack of oversight. And before every one piles on me, this isn't the first time under pauls tenure similar things have happened, where it only changed after being burnt a game, then he realizes it, and the only thing I can think is its because he is not paying attention to all units like he should.

When coaches do sp teams review they go, ok who is starting. And lets say lamar owes goes 7 RS and true Freshman. Why the f........ would paul go sounds good pre planning? No way. Because on the call in show he was like...thats just to many. You can't do that. YET YOU DID. So for me. Is he even reviewing this stuff? Its mind boggling.

rant off. Maybe I am being carried away with this, but I dont' think so. Its a big miss on his end and its square on him for the loss.

For the most part, I don't disagree with what you are saying. I wonder, however, how other HC's handle things like this. I would imagine that generally a HC trusts his assistants to make the right decisions and doesn't micromanage unless he has to. After all, no HC can know every single thing that is going on, even though it would seem like he should.
