Look, I think everyone can agree that if we miss another bowl game or have 6 wins with a loss to uga CPJ is most likely gone. In a make or break year for CPJ this just isnt a good look
I don't agree. We simply do not have the funds to fire CPJ regardless of how the team performs next season. We're paying Hewitt, Gregory, Pastner, and CPJ up through 2019, if I remember correctly. With a cash low contract coming from adidas (much lower than Russell), we'd be killing the atheltic department by adding a 5th major coach to our payroll. Add in the fact that hiring someone better would command as much if not more than what we are paying CPJ now, it's not financially feasible for a historically cash poor program. We have to wait until 2020 at minimum before entertaining thoughts of hiring a new football coach.

No lawyer or agent is actively shopping or soliciting new jobs for their client unless they were asked to do so by said client. If an agent or lawyer is actively trying to lose their license to practice, sure. It's one thing to field calls from schools, it's another to actively seek one out. Make no mistake, CPJ's agent was trying to get CPJ in the mix.

I don't buy the whole "leverage for negotiation" ploy one bit. First, if you're not willing to walk if you don't get what you want, then what good is "leverage"? So if TStan would have said "Paul, I hear what you're saying and I think you deserve it, but we just can't make the numbers work..." where is CPJ going? Second, you've got to be willing to take a job, and the job has to be available to you if you want leverage. So if UT would have called back and said, "We want you Paul, what do you want, we'll get it for you..." CPJ would have just said "Well, I just need you guys to pump up my contract at GT...just play along" you put UT in an awkward situation.

Also, all contracts of coaches at public schools are available via FOIA laws. Agents are well aware of what the market is for coaches.

We never played UF?

WTH? Do you guys know anything about GT history?

We played UF in the 80s under Curry for starters.

We left the SEC after 63.

ND was much, much better back then. We also please layed USC at least twice.

I think too many here think college football started in 2005 or something.

CPJ us in no way playing a tougher schedule now than Carson, Rodgers or curry played.
Curry played UF twice, losing both times, not so much because UF was good as that we were BAD.
We played USC (w) four times, all since 1961, going 2-2 against them.

This is big boy football, Coach Johnson should reach out to jobs like Tennessee. We are delusional to think that Georgia Tech is anywhere close to the level that Tennessee is. We are a middling program with middling resources. Tennessee would be a step up and Johnson would finally have a real shot of getting whatever player he wants.

The drawback to his system is that is simply seen as old and archaic by most High schoolers. They don't want to play for this, High schoolers don't care if you win 8 games a year. The elite players want the accolades, they want the hype, and they want to play for the national championship.

Sorry if it was mistaken on my tone. I agree with you that TS is righting some wrongs by some horrendous AD's, but I do think that CPJ has used these excuses for his failure to build a consistent winner after 10 years as a head coach
I also didn't take CPJ's complaints that way. I don't recall him saying directly anything about a lack of support until a few weeks before MBob left. It was reported that CPJ had the majority of the funding for the locker room renovations aligned and MBob turned down the donations and the project. I haven't seen any evidence that is true, but it would make CPJs statements and reactions about a lack of support make a lot of sense. I was sure at that time that either MBob or CPJ would be gone pretty soon. I'm very happy that it was MBob who left. From things that came out after he left it seems apparent that MBob caused problems not only in football but in the athletic association, the other sports, and with the donor base.

Not to throw ball bearings on the dance floor but I don't agree. I think he has two years into his newly extended contract to 2022 before the heat is turned up. But, there is always a but, if he continues to show interest in other jobs, all bets are off. I am guessing the GT AD is like most owners or managers in business and doesn't want a guy who doesn't want to be here. (In fairness I believe the chronology was that the call was made about four months before the contract extension, and that's a fair hunting season.) More interesting to me than the fact he was looking is that he didn't even get a look. Maybe that tracks to his offense and fears it can't fill a big stadium with big bills to pay.

Does anybody know what his salary is with the new contract?

I believe CPJ will win and retire at Tech. As for the Tennessee call, yea, maybe he did tell his agent to call. At that time was roughly the Duke game and he may have had one of those moments where you start thinking it might be time to move on. Sort of like when you are married and you are out with the guys and the cute girl across the way winks at you. Or you have a bad day at work. You might wink back, but then you catch yourself and say nope.

Yea look at the actual play series with UF.

last time we played them was 78, 80, and 81. So we only really played them in the 20's 30's and 50's. Your argument seems to be the wrong one.

He is under contract through 2022 and we are trying to recover from horrid financial decisions from former AD’s on basketball buyouts. Johnson ain’t going anywhere. They’re going to give him time to see what he can do with:

1. The increased staff, and
2. A DC that he actually wanted

The problem is that, as I posted earlier in the week, the margin for error is razor thin. We may improve, but still not show more wins...so does that actually count as improvement? We will see...but I think we at least have him for 3 more seasons. After that, who knows...

Occasionally. But not consistently since Bobby Dodd retired. Bud Carson didn't have much success at Tech, nor did Bill Fulcher. Pepper Rodgers had a magnetic personality and recruited some great athletes. His defenses were very good, and he had some good QBs and offensive backs. But the on-field playcalling was erratic, and he never was able to put together a consistent winning program. Coach Curry left with the program on an upward trajectory, but he struggled at first with 1- and 2-win seasons. And apparently he was able to coach his players above their abilities, because when Coach Ross came in, the complaint was that Tech didn't have the "athletes". Coach Ross and his staff suffered similar difficulties as Curry before they finally turned it around... only to have Bill Lewis come in. Coach O'Leary's teams were strong, but not so much after Coach Friedgen left. Then we had Coach Gailey, who wasn't a terrible coach, but his inconsistency was similar to Pepper Rodgers. So, although we've had good teams at the Flats over the years, we've never had consistently good teams, at least not in my lifetime.
Guess what, over all Johnson is essentially the same as Gomer. It's like golf, they don't ask how. They ask how many. No one can argue the offense is more productive under johndon, but the programs success is really no better. Today, th e program on perception is in the bottom half of the ACC. It wasn't before he got here.

either CPJ and/or his agent have stones the size of bowling balls. UT had one of their worst teams in their history. Winless in the SEC. I think hapless is an appropriate adjective here. Only wins were Southern Miss, U Mass, Indiana State and guess who their 4th victim was? I can't help but laugh at the chutzpah of this move. Really, I find this amazing if it's even real.

I tried to tell Tech people our b-ball team would not likely continue with success if Cremins was let go. Now look where we have come since. A flash in the pan moment of brilliance followed by long term mediocrity at best.

As a lifelong Tech fan I want to see CPJ stay here, succeed at the highest levels possible, and retire here.

But there is also a part of me that wouldn’t mind seeing him go to a factory, with a factory’s football resources, where he and his O could really shine. He’d make Miss St. a real thorn in the side of bama.

I also think a lot a sanctimonious Tech fans deserve to endure another Bill Lewis. As much as some deserve this, for the greater good of Tech I hope it never happens.

But I would like to see him get a shot at a factory where he’d shut up all of his ignorant critics. His O scheme is not his weakness. He has some weaknesses as a HC but his scheme and mastery of it ain’t one of them.
