First let me say I don't care for CGC. But as spring practice starts I always get my hopes up. So are some of us ( me ) being too hard on him. I know when he was hired I thought 7 years was just too much, 4 years I would have been happy. But when I look back his first year was really not his recruiting class per say. The next year was the covid year. I really thought last year we would have been better but I really loss faith in him after the last 6 games. I just want to win.

I can answer that question but this is only me. Ross took over in 1987 and we finished 2-9 then in 1988 we finished 3-8. At that time I really didn't care for him or thought he would make it a Tech. Then in 1989 we started 0-3 but finished 7-4. Not sure that really answered the question
I remember the Ross years well. The team looked prepared and sharp even when losing. There were lots of glimmers of hope along the way too. After his second year I had no doubt that we would win in year three. By year four I honestly thought we had a chance to win every game.

Feelings are by definition irrational. But two things seem to be true about them. You can’t control them and sometimes they are telling you something you need to pay attention to. I wish I could feel optimistic about this season. But what are you going to do? It’s a feeling. I’m not causing it and I am not in control of it.

I am truly happy for those who are excited about this season. I honestly hope it rubs off on me.

Looks like the roster has been updated on ramblinwreck.com.

I notice that neither Nick Pendley or Ryan Spiers are listed anymore.

We may have to convert some DL to OL just to have enough to be viable for practice and to weather an entire season. We should place a national ad to try and attract any starting offensive lineman anywhere in Power 5 football who is even slightly interested in possibly transferring to contact us and discuss the possibilities of coming to Georgia Tech.

How about, “We are not the team I promised we would be and that’s on me. We have our work cut out for us, but I guarantee we will be a much better team this year.”

That would be both a realistic assessment of where the program is, reassuring some fans that the coach is not delusional, while also throwing out some hope.

I remember when Bud Carson took over from Dodd, some players revolted at the style change, the schedule got much harder and we got a major a$$ kicking by uga to end the season. Carson was low key before the next season, didn’t sugarcoat his struggles, and then he said this, “I guarantee we will not lose to Georgia next year.”

At the time I thought it was a major mistake to predict that victory, for multiple reasons. But it gave the fans hope.

Tech was much better the next season, though still struggling. Against heavily favored Georgia, Tech had a goal line stand to end the game and preserve a 6-0 win.
Brings back fond memories Dodds soft practices were over - really tough hitting practices were not liked by the seniors. Those defenses were so fun to watch.

Following a legend
we had a novice marine defensive specialist head coach. Dodd tried to get gt former coaches who were head coaches at Ark and Tenn. We got Carson who added glanville who was a screamer at practices. Fun to watch as a student
Carson was a great defensive coach but the blue blood money guys let him go in 71 or 2. Shutting out Uga didn't mean enough.
In 74 & 75 Carson's Cover 2 pass defense that he brought to gt and his steel curtain DL took the Pittsburg Steelers to super bowl victories .

We eventually fired Carson

I saw his last game at the Peach Bowl. His players quit on him. He forced them to go to a bowl when they didn’t want to but he felt like he needed the bowl win to keep his job. They made sure he didn’t get the win.

Steel Curtain at Pittsburgh was one of the greatest defenses in NFL history. As you well know.

The Tech coaching tree was broken after Carson though. He was the last to be a successor in the Heisman, Alexander, Dodd line.

Dodd was so good we had to expand stadium. Then we latter upper decked the North stands. Never could get the money guys to pay for coaches - we were big time in early 60 s but got cheap. What if we had bought Broyles instead of Carson.
We are still building fancy building for Gtaa and we have a coach we found at the weekend budget rent car special

Maybe cgc has figured out how to focus and not fritter.

Back to spring training

I have great concerns about both lines, We lost as much off the DL as we did the OL, arguably more. Both performed very poorly last year. Nothing else we want to do will matter if we don't see significant improvements in both.

I don't see us having any extra DL to move to the OL.

i think we’re gonna hit the portal at the end of spring practice. i think it’ll heat back up in may.

wouldn’t be surprised to see some upper classmen from bigger programs hit the portal when they get passed on the depth chart by younger guys. i would definitely like some people that may not have had significant game time at one of the bigger schools but have been practicing around top level talent for 2/3 years.

If transfers in basketball are any indicator, top-tier upper-class big men are hard to come by. I think we’re more likely to find a McGowan than a Cochran post-Spring-practice, and I think the better players make their moves before the Spring.
It would be nice to be wrong and get a star, but finding role players and backups seems more realistic to me.

it’s just my prediction based on the seeming frequency of the portal lately. i don’t necessarily think they’re gonna be stars but i think there’s gonna be some talent there

The other unknown is how much of Long's schemes will give the O-Line ways to perform more consistently. Being very predictable is hard to succeed without superior talent. Maybe incorporating TE's, getting better vision and more success on short to intermediate passes and mixing up run/pass on particularly 1st down will help.

i do think 2 TE sets will be seen. at the very least i think a TE will feature in just about every formation

Used to be an arms race to spend money on fancy facilities for recruiting. Now it's turned into spending directly to the players. I'm still trying to understand why the Edge Center needs to be replaced unless the GTAA wants fancier offices.

In slugs basketball analog - it's hard to miss " a top tier big man".
Bottom line Gtaa is second tier and going down.
It's hard to miss our $$ tragectory verses the semi pro top tier. We can't afford top tier coaches much less top tier NIL players.

COLLINS USES ANY ANGLE FOR RECRUITING
HE will do his best to snag some talent with the promise of players desired position or guaranteed playing time.

CGC has some very complex angles on a ol guard that wants to be a ot.

Back in the day Andy wanted to offer a ol guy (Radford) at the HS where I volunteered. Sewaks scouting info said Radford was a guard and now sewak wanted to find an ot ot "that can move" (Medley sic) . RADFORD WAS NOT A GUARD IN HIS SR YEAR . HE WAS A A CENTER.
Andy felt our best hope was to offer them both - the HS coaches strongly advised that because of Medley s family situation he would follow Radford.

Sewak said not even allowed to offer (why the hc allowed this is un known) .
I told the hc coaches and advised that we would only offer the tackle

Radford ( super academic who wanted to major in engineering) was not offered by gt.
Did we use all angles to get the recruit - fact answer = no.
The un answerable question = would we have absolutely gotten one or both if Andy was allowed to offer.

So whose in and whose out:

This year we get to play Radford and Medley.
R was recruited to Clemson and was a back up at center and guard. His parents were not happy w guard , but due to starting center getting injured, he was moved to center where he is now a starter at Clemson.

M went to UCF , had family issues, but is back as likely starting OG.

(Imo, if Clemson had put Radford at og, Collins and key would have a chance at him in portal.)

Sewak and Johnson departed at end of year and went away from gt and in the sunset of retirement.

Andy bounced around w life issues and now is at Buffalo as def specialist. May head South.

I gave zero for that because it's not critically needed and is floors to short.
I designate my gift for football recruiting .
