  1. For This to be a Special Year

For a special year we need the production we expect from the new punter, a good performance from the new PK, and virtual flawless performance from the new holder along with no long term injuries to the OL. I expect some improvement from the D but doubt that it rises to making the positive...
  2. For This to be a Special Year

Agree on Branch. He is somewhat like Simmons and Lynch early on...under the radar for many even though some good play has already emerged. Branch has shown the ability to slip through the OL in pass rush and we might get some good push up the middle to compliment the outside push from the DEs.
  3. Questions for CPJ & Players - GT Media Day 2017

Have the coach's considered using two punt return receivers (we have two, or more good ones). Two can better cover the field and this would cut down on the number of punts that hit the ground (and roll). It would get another blocker in better position downfield to protect the catch. We rarely go...
  4. Questions for CPJ & Players - GT Media Day 2017

I like this concept. It is not that different than the popular use of a backup running QB or RB used in the QB spot for special plays. Something like run the WR reverse to our fastest WR (Anderson maybe instead of a starter). Or Quaide at AB in the red zone to block. Or Benson on the BB loop...
  5. 2017 GT Football Guide

Completely agree and players like Lynch got an opportunity where otherwise he was maybe "not on the bus".
  6. Film Room Tax 15 Offense Slow Motions

When you are giving up 100 pounds the cut block helps you hold your position (and not get steam rolled back into the pocket/QB at least temporarily). The cut block is somewhat an equalizer when there is such a size/strength mismatch. And at the point of contact the pass rusher has another...
  7. Tennessee Game 1

That works well against the run as you say but it really requires 4 good DBs one on one against the pass, especially the safety you bring up. A matchup with our ABs would be a rough night if the QB can deliver with some accuracy. Probably a good plan against an unproven QB or one proven to be...
  8. Tennessee Game 1

I agree that disrupting the middle, stopping the BB, and forcing the QB to pitch would be my strategy. It causes more ball handling risk, gets hits on the QB, and the D knows where you are trying to force the ball to go. Fortunately for GT the ABs may light you up on the perimeter and the QB may...
  9. Film Room Tenn 13 Offensive Slow Motion Video

Mostly due to not much LB help we have not been strong in the past defending quick slants. Tn seems to like that play a lot. I hope we prepare better for the slant Sept 4.
  10. Fan Day Scrimmage

Not true. The last two seasons there were no scrimmages in the Fall for the season ticket holders but three years ago there was one. Vouchers were e-mailed out to get in and I used one. You are correct about the vouchers for Fan Day.

    2 wins, 1 loss, 1 tossup.
  12. Film Room Tenn TD (defending the run game)

Yea. Lots of poor angles and poor eyes.
  13. 2017 Offseason Thread

The two DT's make it a good list.
  14. Film Room Tax 7 Defense Slow Motions

Whichever side Simmons is on there is a very good chance he makes a quick inside move applying pressure in the middle and forcing the QB outside. We need to have that contained with somebody. IMO, based on our past tendencies, if we blitz a LB we should often blitz outside on Simmon's side (or...
  15. Film Room Tax 7 Defense Slow Motions

You are correct. Brant is covering the RB and not the slot. Makes sense. Thanks for the clarification. This is the down side of man coverage when you lose containment and give the QB extra time: defenders wind up chasing receivers and lose sight of the path of the ball.
  16. Film Room Tax 7 Defense Slow Motions

Interesting D lineup. Gray is in the box with no coverage and no one blocks him (he plays this well until he over pursues and misses the tackle). Mitchell is in man coverage in the box on the slot receiver (and does get blocked in the back). Surely we have a better coverage plan for the slot...
  17. Why should we really expect to be good????

The cumulative contribution (back-up, starters, STs and big plays) of the Austins over the past 3 years has been very significant and they have continued to improve while maintaining consistency. They are tough and competitive with strong football instincts and fundamentals. I expect even more...
  18. Fan Day Scrimmage

@tech_wreck47 see my private message to you.
  19. Film Room Tax 2 Defense Slow Motions

Agree about PJ. CB makes a play that probably saves a TD unless the Nickel gets there from the other side of the LOS. MLB and DE should have been somewhere near the play ending. There were no other players in position to stop this play. The four outside players pre-snap were WLB, MLB, DE, and CB...
  20. Film Room Tax 2 Defense Slow Motions

MLB can't get off the block and is pushed back 10 yards and is never in position to make a play. Nickel back is not fooled and pursues across the field and is in position to make a play. CB starts to take himself out but recovers and makes a good play. DE crashes down (even though two players...
