Well yeah, you think being 20% worse on third downs makes us about the same. I'm not sure you can trust your own judgement.

Think he means just about the same overall. We were 108th in takeaways last year and 9th this year. So I think it's a wash on 3rd downs

The incessant 3rd and longs which we gave up under Roof did it for me. I guess there has been little if any improvement there this year, but Woody is playing with the same players with the same training (sic) that Roof had.

Super, we usually agree on things, but hopefully you can respect my opinion, as it is just that, like yours. I said last year that the D was giving great effort for CTR. I never saw a lack of effort. I did see a lack of talent, and yes, CTR did not blitz as much as some would have liked. I agree they are giving their all this year, but I will not agree that they were not giving their all last year too.
I agree that the players were giving their all, but Roof ONLY got aggressive when CPJ told him to. A DC shouldn't need for the HC to micromanage.

Just a few days ago, before the UVA game, we found out that PJ had to tell CNW to be more aggressive also. I think with all of the DC's, PJ is having a "say". But, whatever, again, I understand your need to be correct about Roof.

That makes no sense. How does getting turnovers on 1st or second down, or on special teams make our 3rd down defense a wash?

Do you get the impression that some here actually, truly believe, that a different QB would have made any difference this season or today?

Insanity.
A different QB COULD have made a difference overall in the season, but TQM had the experience and deserved to start, although I think he should have been pulled several times during the season due to his obviously lingering injury. But no, I don't believe a different QB would have made a difference today. A different O-line might have, and certainly a bigger and stronger defense.

You have to factor in takeaways as part as a defensive statistic. You can't say "oh defense sucked on 3rd down so it sucks overall." That's how it makes sense

lol? We are 20% worse on third downs this year. We were good on third downs last year.

Well, partly because we were awful on first and second down last year, and we often gave up the score or first before third down.

Defense is about the same as last year, a little worse in stats.

Special teams is better though

I don't "need to be correct about Roof." I didn't like what he did when he was DC under O'Leary, and I hated it when he got hired back for a second shot. Sorry, but he just never proved anything to me. I know CPJ had a conversation with Woody about being aggressive, but I doubt it was a micro-managing type talk. I don't know, of course, since I wasn't there; nor were you....LOL

Maybe this will stop now. I will end with at least you said, "I don't know, of course...." It is fine for you to not like Roof's system. I have no problem with that, but trying to make this year's D sound better, when statistically it is worse in ALMOST every category, is my issue. I don't trust my eyes and my opinion, but I do trust hard statistical facts.
