The Lew Effect

I trust the actual professional that has been recognized as one of the top coaches in his field over anyone else. Plus, I doubt the extra muscle will cause our performance in the trenches to be any worse than the last couple years when Clemson and uGA have slapped us around worse than a pornstar in a gang bang video.

We clearly needed strength and size across the board, especially if we are no longer relying on offensive trickery. Coach Collins knows the measurables and body types he needs and Lew will sculpt them to that mold.

We have the best Strength Coach in the country - trust him and trust the process.

It is uncomfortable we only had 7 players that could rep 225 - 20 times regardless of who left the team or who joined the team.

Do you have the numbers from other teams / previous years at the same time? Your rep max ebbs and flows. Interested to see what it looks like next year at the same time points. Obviously it’s gonna peak out after your conditioning season (aka right now). Also doesn’t help that we’re light on OL/DL right now.

Thrilled we have Lew and more importantly the players love him. His was of making workouts fun is very creative/smart. But I’m also always weary of taking random numbers released and making broad conclusions without context.

The stronger you are the better you are going to be. The faster and quicker you are the better you will be. The meaner you are the better. The smarter the better. I believe our team for the last 5 years relied on CPJ instead of getting stronger and faster. Any body can improve themselves and become a 5 star player. from the time I was 22 till I retired from playing rugby I trained every off season hard and got a lot stronger and faster.

Those numbers are not going to be posted. You could look at the NFL draft numbers, google the average 1RM max by position for college athletes - I think a few dated studies should pop up for this, you can also google other strength topics related to college football athletes and checkout a CSCS book.

If our defensive/offensive linemen cannot rep 225 - 20 times, that means their 1RM is probably less than 340-350lbs. Someone who can rep 225 - 20 times should be able to 1RM 390. So you do not think I making these numbers up - there are charts for this stuff. Also, you rep max, which I think is 3 reps for the team shouldn't ebb and flow by 50lbs, more like 5-20lbs. Nutrition plays a very important role, here.

While benching 350lbs is strong compared to the average man or rower :D, it isn't that strong compared to the defensive lineman bull-rushing you in the 3rd quarter when you are tired and need that push strength and vice-versa on the defensive side for our players trying to get past a 320lb+ offensive lineman. Winning starts in the weight room. Poor strength is not the reason why our defensive looks like it is being manhandled last season or years prior but it does play a factor in the grand scheme of things.

So yes, it is uncomfortable that only 7 players can rep 225 - 20 times.

My only concern is if we are focusing too much on the bodybuilding aspect of this. I read this article a year ago on why bodybuilding is not generally good for athletes. The guy who wrote it was S&C at ASU and had trained NFL players. I'm a runner, not a bodybuilder, so I am no expert, but it does make some sense.

OMG really? We pulled an award winning football S&C coach back to ATL, the players seem to really enjoy what he’s doing and they seem to be getting stronger, and you find something to be concerned about with this? That’s what I call working overtime to find fault.

I’m excited to have Coach Lew. I’m very interested to see how it translates to the field. I definitely see a benefit in improved strength; I’m not sold on the benefit of photo bulk. I sure hope we’re not sacrificing speed and quickness for the sake of gym-rat photo sessions.

For other positions, it definitely makes less sense. I couldn't care less if Nathan Cottrell is built - I really just want him to be explosive, run good routes, and catch the ball (and not get injured when he takes hits). Extra fat and muscle mass would theoretically just slow him down.

Explosiveness comes from strength. Strength comes from muscles. With greater strength comes greater muscle mass (to varying degrees). Strength also enhances muscle and body control, which are very important for skill position players. It also increases odds of winning a "jump ball" for receivers.

You have me so confused.

Your constant gripe has been we are undersized and slow, especially on the defensive side, yet you take issue with with guys getting bigger. Everyone said we were small and slow under the previous S&C, but now we are worried about sacrificing speed. Can’t sacrifice something that was not there already, right? Also, name me any track athlete that isn’t extremely muscular.

Let’s stop hyperventilating over non-issues

Yeah, the cutting is probably due to correct nutrition. I would venture to guess in keeping with the "NFL base" theme CGC has set, that Coach Lew and the Nutrition Lady are trying to get the players to a certain body fat percentage that reflects the NFL average body fat percentage for the player's position.

I don't have to know exactly what they're doing to know they're not just focused on body-building - I guarantee what they're doing is more in the vein of crossfit than what a true "body-builder" would do. You can focus on functional strength without focusing on bodybuilding.

As an aside, I would expect January/February to be when the team is "weakest" in general as strength and conditioning training is more intense in the off season than during the season, when the focus is on actual football practice. I don't know the exact regime, but I would expect they spend 2-3x more time on strength training in the off season than they do during the season.

I think you’re more confused than you think. I’m not the one complaining about size and lack of speed on the DL. I’m the one complaining about lack of talent on the DL.

Also, my post said I liked the new coach. I guess you just completely missed that part. All I did was question the relationship between bulk, speed and quickness. I’m asking for opinions on this from people who know more than I do about it.

I know you played defense, but does that mean you have to be so defensive?

Based on post history, I’m far less defensive than you & some of your cohorts.

Maybe this will answer some of your questions
