I think that comment was about K.
I know.
That applies for any position.

I'm talking about kicker. He said he thought he knew but after Monday's scrimmage he wasn't sure. I'm not saying he doesn't know anyways, I'm just stating what he said.If you think for a second that CPJ doesn't know who will start 5 days out from the game, you are naive.

I think erratic and kicker are usually redundant. Makes the game (unnecessarily ) exciting.
Coach knows...but that only minimally impacts my tremendous fear and trepidation. Unfortunately, until I see it... I will be worried about both KO's and FG's. So spoiled with Butker... took it for granted. I can already feel the feeling in my gut as I visualize all the KO returns we're going to have to "stop" in 2017. I hope we're pleasantly surprised.Coach said he wasn't worried about field goals but more worried about kickoffs. Tennessee has a great return specialist in Eric Berry's little brother so hopefully we have that sorted out for the first game, or hopefully an amazing kickoff coverage team to help out.
we play 3 LB in 4-3 and 2 in nickel. CPJ said "We have some young guys backing up but Terrell's the 3rd linebacker, or the 2nd linebacker. I think he and Victor are kinda bracketed right there with the nickel now."We play two linebackers at a time. Cpj said Lewis is the third linebacker. Those freshman may not see the field much at all. Just because they are in two deep doesn't guarantee playing time.
He also wants 8 o-linemen who are game ready. I can't wait to see our guys mash some vols and put them on skates going backwards on Monday!
We haven't hit 100% pan out rate with LB, but name a position where we have? Not sure why LB is so thin. I mean, what is going on with recruiting there, I haven't followed LB closely, but its clear the guys we recruited the last 4 years have not panned out enough or developed; we haven't done a good job evaluating....true freshman are jumping them. (and they should, because what you see is some guys are not P5 starters).

We have 6 scholarship LB's that are soph or older.
3 of those are starters
2 are not on the 2-deep
1 is injured and sitting out (Curry would easily be in the 2-deep if not hurt.)
So 4 of the 6 would be in the two deep if not for injuries, that's a 67% pan out rate for anybody old enough to evaluate in this regard. Not great, but not unheard of, either.
Also, Jackson is a huge contributor on ST's, not sure about Cooksey.
I can't speak for you , but I'm old and very slow , I'll just watch.Let's play already!

Agreed. Mitchell, Lewis and Alexander were heavily recruited, and all of them panned out. Brashear was lightly recruited, but is surprisingly in the two-deep (surprising IMO). Jackson was lightly recruited. The only one I would consider a miss is Cooksey, as he was heavily recruited, and isn't in the two deep by his third year in the program. However, he's also still young. He still has 3 years to contribute. I would say CTR has had a pretty good track record at LB. Just IMO.
I wouldn't call a senior who has never started that played behind weak lbs in the past as panned out regaring lewis. Vic alexander verdict is not in but so far nothing to write home about. He couldnt beat out a really underwhelming olb core last year.
You have to start 2-3 lbs. by the nature of logic someone is going to start. That does not mean they panned out. If the definition of panning out is starting well. Then ok. Not for me.
Brant mitchell has not been that great either imo. Its just behind him has been so weak no one can supplant him. Last year he had games he may have been in the bottom 3rd of players on D regarding performance. In fact sometimes I think he has regressed. So again. Has he panned out? Maybe this year but up to now our lb have been our weakest position yes worse than dl. and I cant figure it out. Well. I have an idea.
I hope to hell they truly pan out this year.
We can agree to disagree. Imo we have starters that start because someone has to. So. I am underwhelmed. This position can be much better.
Maybe swilling splashes on. And takes a starting role.
If we have to burn his red shirt, then we have too. We won't do it recklessly. Laskey lost a year, but it wasn't the end of the world.it would be nice to RS Howard but I would doubt it happens--too good relatively
What would you say are the major weaknesses of the starting LBs?
Seems like they're pretty good at stopping the run, do they just stink at pass coverage?
Hopefully BJS and TDR can step up, it baffles me our D coordinator coaches this position and is a great recruiter and LB is still a major weakness for us.
Shoot for the moon, guys.LOL "pan out" rate.
