In November 152 years ago, the first football game between Tech and Vanderbilt was played in 1892, a 20–10 Vanderbilt win. It was Georgia Tech's inaugural season (their second-ever game, the first was with Georgia) and Vanderbilt's third season.

I hope you all who are excited about this matchup are right. I would have absolutely loved to have played Vanderbilt during the regular season. Something would have been on the line to motivate peak effort during the season. But this feels like a game our team may have trouble getting up for. Bowls are fickle mistresses. Meanwhile, Vanderbilt is ready to continue showing the world that they have arrived as an SEC team not to be overlooked.

Another reason I think we picked this bowl is Key is from Alabama, not only did he coach under Saban but he grew up in that state. This will be a full circle moment for him because of that and also because, 39 years ago a certain Tech alum by the name of Bill Curry took Tech bowling and the game was also played in Birmingham. Both Tech grads, both rebuilt the program after dark periods.
