It's a great moment, buuuut … T.J. was down at the one and the refs didn't call it.

As I always say, it's our field and we call 'em our way.
How do you figure he was down at the one? The ball was across the goal line when his knee touched on the one. I am pretty sure that where the ball ends up BEFORE a player goes down still counts as a TD.

Time to slow our roll our optimism a little on the new D. Don’t get me wrong, I think a lot of the changes will benefit a lot of guys. But......NT is hugely important in any 3-4. And none of our bigs have stepped up to own that position. That’s concerning.

It’s not that concerning to me yet, it’s a new system and only a few week into learning it. CNW pretty much said it’s the position that makes things work, so it’s probably a little harder to learn moving in over the center compared to some of the other positions. If we hear this half way through summer practices I will get concerned. I think it also helps that CPJ and some other players have given some praise to the guys there at NT.

I’m not pressing any panic buttons. I’m just saying there is reason for concern that we may not have the personnel to make the new system a vast improvement.

Which is kind of what I was expecting going in. Not having great fits necessarily at each position on top of learning a new scheme and terminology could lead to more headaches on D again this year.

And the thought of a freshman being pressed into service at NT gives me anything but warm and fuzzies.

As we move forward I expect continued improvement. And I really like my initial impression of Woody. I just think some patience will likely be in order initially.

Since we hired CNW I have thought this was Adam's chance to solidify himself as a starter at the NT position. It is a really great opportunity for him to take a big step forward. He has the since, just needs the endurance and technique.

At least some of that apparent depth may have been out of necessity due to injuries rather than quality depth, an example being the UNC game (the tie that cost us an undisputed national championship). We had three offensive line starters out for that game. Following a long run by Shawn Jones, IIRC we had first and goal from about the UNC 5. And I think third and goal from the 1. Fourth and goal from the 1 right in front of me. We ran it four times and did not score. An incredibly frustrating afternoon in Chapel Hill and a game we could have easily lost.
Natrone Means controlled the ball, not giving us as many chances...he was one tough son of a gun...ended up playing for Ross at San Diego

Look at it this way: Woody’s App State defense was slightly better than Ted Roof’s GT defense against common opponents, and Woody had much less talent to work with. Our defense may not turn into a VT-level defense overnight, but there should be some improvement, and I think Woody has the potential to be the 3-4 version of Bud Foster.

CNW is a football coach ! I like his demeanor and attitude I wish CPJ would learn some things from him.

It will be interesting to see what sort of rotation in the DL that he uses. I thought we did not sub much under Roof and our guys looked worn out at times against bigger opponents. I hope he will sub the nose to build depth and keep them a little fresher. UGA and Clemson totally out manned us. We weren't even close in those games and it could have been worse. Even Smart backed off in the 4th quarter. I was surprised he didn't run it up on us.

I think opposing offensive coordinators may come to view our defense the way opposing defensive coordinators view our offense. One thing that Woody said in his press conference that excites me is that he thought disguising defensive plays is easy. One of the biggest criticisms of Ted Roof was that he couldn’t disguise a coverage to save his life. If this comes easy to Coach Woody, then our defense can be a real pain in the [Alice Cooper] to our opponents.

Forum: "CPJ Needs to be nicer to the media!"

Local Media: Says something nice about CPJ

I listen to that station regularly. Not a lot but regularly, still, while flipping around through 3 other stations throughout my day. My money is on the station's owner having told their on-air "talent" to say nice things about us. Some of their "talent" though tell the owner to f himself.

Does anyone here honestly believe that Woody’s defense will be worse than Roof’s defense?
I don't want to "like" your post, because it might give the wrong impression of my thoughts. I definitely believe that Woody's defense will be better than Roof's, and I frankly expect evidence of that from the start. We may still get burned, but IMO it's a helluva lot better to get burned attacking than to get burned reacting. The more we attack, the sooner the big results will happen. I expect to see some of that attack mode in action Friday night.

It's spring. They're trying out everybody, especially on D. I think Coach is right in saying that he could pick a starting line-up today, but you want to give everybody a chance. That's why you suddenly see such notice of Chris Martin, for instance. He fits the new D very well, but I bet that either Glanton or Cerge-Henderson starts when fall rolls around. Oth, I doubt that a frosh will see the field on D next year except, maybe, at DB somewhere.

I reiterate that I think our overall stats on D will be about the same. You live by the blitz, you die by the blitz, and the whole thing is brand new for these players. I do think we'll have more turnovers and negative plays, however. Hope I'm being too pessimistic.
