The whole pickin' sides thing is clean fun in the preseason as long as it stays in the preseason. Once the season starts, I hope all on here can fully support whomever gets the nod. If not, the mods will have their work cut out for them!

The refreshing thing about this debate, is I get the sense that everyone on this board is willing to ride or die with whoever Coach Johnson picks.

Yeah, we all have our guy that we're intrigued with but deep down we all have a sense that coach knows what the heck he's doing, and whoever he picks is the right choice.

It's for this reason that you don't see most people getting really heated in this, rather it's all in good fun

**Edit** daggone it, then I post and see that while I have been composing my post 33 jacket has said the exact same thing 10 minutes earlier. Lol, c'est la vie

**Edit 2** daggone it!!! 33 jacket AND dressedcheeseside. Jeez.

With all due respect, you're reading too much into this. CPJ isn't saying they all suck equally (I know you didn't say that specifically). He literally said again just a couple days ago that the QB position is the least of his worries. They are all great options. Its just that nobody is playing poorly, they are all pushing each other.

I get what you're saying, but competition is a good thing. Nothing makes a player work harder, pay better attention, get there a little earlier, stay there a little later, basically go the extra mile than somebody nipping at their heels or having somebody a smidgeon in front of you. Competition is the best motivator in the world. If anything will see our young qb's reach their full potential, it's competition and the real chance to play.

Having a bunch of guys all capable also gives the coach way more options on game day and incase of ******. (not gonna say it :censored:)

I get it, and I'm really not that worried...just a little uneasy I guess...it just doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies...

Also, I just have never like the QB merry go round during a season. It's just tough to get in a rhythm, and I'd say it doesn't work most of the time. I honestly just hope we pick a guy and stay with him unless he just proves to be a liability.

CPJ is not a "merry-go-round" kind of coach. Especially with the qb.

It's down to 1 guy, but CPJ can change is mind lol. But I would guess if it's not the one guy he's thinking about there might just be one more guy pushing him. JMO

Told y'all it wasn't a 3 or 4 horse race lol....

But he can change his mind,...:sneaky:.
He has been playing the media the whole time. Im not saying there wasn't a battle, competition or whatever word you want to insert there, it just wasn't as swerious as everyone bought into.
Coach speak.

Same thing with Bama a few years ago with AJ & Sims. "competition" AJ started and won a NC.

Since CPJ just said he's known for a while who the QB starter will be it makes me think maybe he's sticking with MJ for his experience. He was adamant at start of camp that MJ was the starter even after missing spring practice.

I no longer think it's TM since just two weeks ago CPJ was saying he might move TM to Aback.

I think MJ will be on a short leash and TM backs him up for Tenn.

I also think TM will then get moved to Aback because CPJ wants LJ and JJ to get reps with 2s and 3s so they can develop this year and maybe take over at some point this season or next

Congrats to MJ! Looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Your the second relative/relationship with MJ that has said this, so color me surprised but I guess that settles it. Mathew Jordan is our starter. A month ago that would obviously not be surprise but here we are...

Game can't get here soon enough, excited about the seaso .

I didn't say that lol..
I don't want people thinking that's what I said.

Wait, what? You said it wasn't really a "serious" competition, that it was coach speak.

MJ opened camp as the starter, so your clearly talking about MJ. If not, what are you saying? Your post seemed pretty clear.

Pure speculation ... reading between the lines of the article in todays AJC leads me to think his starter if the season started today would be Taquon Marshal.
He states he's known for a while and it's about the amount of reps each guy is getting ... so with MJ out in the spring and now with a shoulder, TM has gotten the most reps ??
If so, two worries would be 1) first time starter in the first game of the season vs. Top 25 team and 2) ball security ...

Trying to put words in my mouth..
I said it wasn't a 3 or 4 horse race. I said it wasn't as serious as everyone thought. CPJ agreed down to one, I said it wasn't as serious ( take it for what its worth)

I have not said one way or the other who the QB will or won't be.
Let me make that part clear.

If MJ starts this season as QB1, I will be thrilled, b/c it will mean he has command of the entire offense and gives us the best chance to win.

If someone other than MJ starts the season as QB1, I will be thrilled, b/c it will mean that guy has playmaking ability CPJ deems effective enough to overcome not having command of the entire offense, and therefore gives us the best chance to win.

When JD McCoy burst on the scene at Dillon High, Coach Taylor deemed his playmaking ability so effective, that he moved a veteran QB1 to backup, then WR. Matt Saracen proceeded to make plays there, then step back in with the steady hand at QB in the playoffs.

Ok, so that last part is me just reminiscing about a great show... (although East Dillon was a better story!)

My take on the situation (with a poorly made graph)

MJ has the highest floor (very good and important) but the lowest ceiling of the 4.
TM has had the best consistent level of play but has been unable to pull away for a variety of reasons.
LJ has a higher ceiling than MJ or TM because he is the best passer, but he doesnt know the offense as well as the other 2, holding back his average level of play and keeping a low floor.
JJ has the highest ceiling of the group ("A big play waiting to happen for either team"- CPJ) and the lowest floor. He will be the starter of this team eventually, but not this year. Higher ceiling than JeT, very excited.

I personally lean towards TM, so this graph may be biased towards that. But I think this is an accurate way to put this. I can see the positives of playing it safe vs Tenn with MJ or going with LJ if he is truly the best QB we can put out there. TM is the happy medium of both, and a middle-class mans version of JeT (better than a poor mans version). Either way I echo 95% of the board where I trust CPJ to make the right call and then call a game based on that QB's strengths.

I'm nto sure I agree with you, but I just want to credit you for good graphwork. A graph that tells a story well and includes the important stuff without getting cluttered is more rare than one would think. Well done.
