I feel very trapped in the middle between the CPJ haters and worshipers in this thread. lol. He has been a good and at times very good coach for us, but his future is a legitimate question after an up and down few years. Also, 80-58 ain't HOF numbers. That said, unless we lose out, I say he stays. Our offensive personnel is well-suited to run his offense next year.
We hated 7-5, 7-5, 7-5, 7-5........ and traded it for up & down but now we only want the up not the down. Sounds to me like many businesses.

There’s 2 main ways to improve this Team & it’s not getting rid of the offense. You don’t strengthen your business by pitching the most productive, profit generating line & hoping you’re going to make the line that’s tanking become great overnight or shooting for mediocre in both so that the average ends up being better. Improve recruiting #1 and improve the defense #2. The strategy to get there is by far the hardest part of the equation.

Hopefully, Woody’s part of the solution to #2. How you’re going to alter 6 decades or more of middling at best recruiting (yeah you can cherry pick the few good years) is beyond me without extreme commitment at many levels. We’re going to need to leverage every bit of our Institute’s competitive excellence to get there & I just don’t see old Bud helping Stansbury drive us to break the mold. Can you name Bammer’s President? Nope, Nick Satan controls that school & that’s why they’re #1. I’m not even sure their AD has a name. Actually, I’m not even sure they have an AD but if they do he’s probably an expert in girls field hockey or something.

Iowa’s offensive line won that 2009 game, in my opinion. They totally dominated the line of scrimmage.

I really need to stay sober so I can remember the games. But alas that would mean I had to come home sober and listen to my wife. The hard choices one has to make.

The thing is, it's a love or hate kind of thing. There are very few it seems that are right in the middle with CPJ. There are a lot of people that get to a point where once they don't like him or the offense no statistic or bowl win or uga win will bring them back.

It really comes down to can CPJ continue to win and fix the issues that come up. And can the school help get him the resources we need

We could let CPJ go and end up with a horrible season or seasons following or do really well. It's a toss up and it comes down to are we really willing to take that risk, when we have an offense that can be potent when working right ?

I just overall feel like there are schools that are much worse off than we are right now.

We have 3 acc wins out of 6 games.
Those 3 teams we defeated have played 18 games.
They have 0,3,1 win =4 of 18.
The vt game was victory or death.
The unc game was a true grit game.

The Miami game is a statement game.
The UVA could be a clutch game for the coastal and a momentum game for uga.

Lots of football left.

I am honestly stunned that people can't appreciate a Hall of Fame coach roaming the sidelines at their school...

If he gets in the Hall of Fame it will be because of his time at GA Southern, not his record at Tech.
He has 5 winning seasons against FBS opponents in 10 years at Tech. Same as Gailey had in 6 seasons-- and the one season Gailey didn't have a winning record against FBS teams he was fired. Two of Johnson's 5 winning seasons vs FBS were due to the quality of players Gailey left behind. He's only 3 of 8 after that.
I am honestly stunned that so many people can't understand that Johnson has been nothing more than a mediocre coach at Tech when his record speaks for itself. And he was hired at twice Gailey's salary.

That offense hurts the overall program.

CPJ is about on par with the rest of the coaches we have had here.

I guess it still comes down to what do we want to be as a school.
What's our baseline ?
Is it a UGA win, bowl and an acc championship?

IIRC, Gailey was given a bonus (in his contract) if he beat UGA. Of course, we know how that turned out. It seems like he may have been shown the door because of his 0-6 record versus UGA, even though DRad explicitly denied this.

Regardless, I’m not sure why you have such fond memories of the Gailey days. His record was very average. Even if he was marginally better because of the reasons you point out, they were far from the glory days of GT football.

Yeah if only we ran a $pread Zone. We'd surely land that 5 * QB we never have. . I mean we only have to keep him eligible for 2.5 then he's gone right! Hey Member that time we ran a prostyle offense we landed this top 17 recruiting class, despite having the 62nd rated class the year before!

He member that time godsey scored on an option play against uga!

The truth of the matter is the offense helps more than it hurts. We've missed on as many 4 stars under johnson as we hit.

People like to talk about johnsons's success in 2008 and 2009 as if it were only because of gailey's players. They may have been recruited by gailey but even with the good players O'leary left behind, running a similar offense. Gailey sucked in 2002. It is not easy to take a roster designed for a different system and implement your own.

The truth of the matter is that whether the offense helps more than it hurts or vice versa is the wrong discussion. Johnson isn't the OC. He's the HC.

He's both and that saves us money and he finally got to hire a DC he wanted.

If that is what you think so be it. But add in other reasons that will hurt any coach the Hill, some of our fans who don't come to games, a Stadium we can't sale out, if we bring in recruits to a big game 30 to 40 % are other teams fans, And being in a big city like Atlanta.

Offenses with Gailey's recruits
FEI
2007 50 Georgia Tech
2008 24 Georgia Tech
2009 2 Georgia Tech

S&P+
2006 38 Georgia Tech
2007 43 Georgia Tech
2008 41 Georgia Tech
2009 21 Georgia Tech

People say CPJ was only successful because he had Gailey's recruits, but to me it looks like CCG had a ~40 ranked offense, and CPJ made it ~20 in two years.

And from what I recall, CCG basically didn't recruit any OL in 2007 leading us to have issues and forcing us to reach on some we wouldn't have. Regardless, I think it's pretty unfair to say CPJ only won because he was left with good players.

CPJ and Mike Leach won’t and can’t land higher profile jobs because they are seen as high level FCS style coaches who run a high school offense. That connotation is permanently with them because of where they started out. If you want to know what Mike Leach would do with a **** ton of talent, look at Oklahoma right now because Lincoln Riley is essentially young Mike Leach. Riley has an advantage that he’s viewed as “starting out” as an Offensive Coordinator for Bob Stoops at OU instead of the years he spent being mentored by Leach at Texas Tech.

Yep, dig the example... People thinking Lincoln Riley is some kind of genius. He is part of the Leach tree, and the last National Championship OU won was with the Leach system. Then they tried to get away from it for a long time, and now they are back to it.

The flip side of the question becomes... if Mike Leach become coach at USC or Texas, would he able to sign a top 10 class?

If CPJ was at Florida/Florida State... would he be able to sign top tier dual threat QB's, top tier running backs, and a premier offensive line? If he could, they'd win a lot. If he couldn't recruit better at Florida than he does at Georgia Tech, they would go up and down and be pretty steady with a few great seasons here and there.

Along with the majority of power 5 schools, so what’s the issue with that and CPJ?

As people have told you time and again the issue is the last 4 years. We are a program going in reverse. But you know that and still don’t care and are probably simply happy you got a response to your post explaining that again. What the heck. I’ll press post anyway.

Not exactly what I've heard. Mike Leach is regarded as a football genius and if you hire him, you will win. At first. His reputation is that he is VERY hard to work with and most AD's simply don't have the energy to butt heads.

CPJ could have had other jobs. He has said so. But, he likes the environment and the kids at Tech. No one steals cars, sells drugs, etc. Just good kids.

Win football games and no AD will care about him being difficult. Look at Bruce Pearl.
