Normally I'd agree with you in that this would be swept under the rug. But the AJC is actually doing a good job in uncovering the details, now it might have gotten bigger than they wanted it to but they are in too deep that they are forced to keep going. The farther the go the more they will uncover. Never forget the AJC is not owned locally so what is their allegiance to Athens? (Is it even in their daily delivery area?)

And with the NCAA now allowing simple accusations to start an investigation, who knows how this will end. Not wishing for the program to suffer out of spite, but as a person who enjoys reading, but the onion is being peeled back layer by layer and I like that type of story.

Yes and No. FOIA cannot force police to turn over material pertinent to an ongoing investigation. Once the investigation is over, the information can be turned over unless it meets on of the other exemptions.

Exemption 7:Information compiled for law enforcement purposes that:
  • 7(A). Could reasonably be expected to interfere with enforcement proceedings
  • 7(B). Would deprive a person of a right to a fair trial or an impartial adjudication
  • 7(C). Could reasonably be expected to constitute an unwarranted invasion of personal privacy
  • 7(D). Could reasonably be expected to disclose the identity of a confidential source
  • 7(E). Would disclose techniques and procedures for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions, or would disclose guidelines for law enforcement investigations or prosecutions if such disclosure could reasonably be expected to risk circumvention of the law

Yeah, at some point there will be “fault-finding” and then the case is presumably closed. Except it won’t be unless all parties involved get what they want. I feel so bad for the family of the young athlete. When you send your child several states away to attend school (as we did with our children) you trust that there are adults at the other end who will see to your child’s well being. This has to look like serious negligence on the part of the university to these parents. They will want answers.

Poorly edited article for what its worth.

Basically states he was there and gave several conflicting statements in the immediate aftermath (heard the crash from an apartment over a mile away????). The police body cam footage of this event, the side conversations and taking statements parts, would be very interesting read. Wondering if this is a string being pull and about to unravel the fabric of uga and A-CC police relationship and heads roll in the police and a sacrificial lamb or 2 in the uga aa.

WOWOWOWOW. 104mph with a .197 BAC. That's on the driver. Carter and her were racing. His are misdemeanors and her toxicology reports could/should open the doors to lawsuits against the university. Wonder who the sacrificial lambs will be?

He has (per the article) repeatedly showed up as players were being arrested or booked and has a direct line with the Chief of Police. On the night of the unfortunate accident several weeks back that took the lives of 2 people, the chief of police was first notified of the incident by Gantt, not the police department. The chief called the police dispatch to make sure the people at the scene knew Gantt was on his way and to keep him filled in on what was going on. In another case, a player had an arrest warrant out for him and the police contacted Gant who said he would take care of it. The player played in Georgia’s game against Charleston Southern 2 days later despite the outstanding warrant, and didn't turn himself in to the police until four days after the game. He also, in violation of NCAA rules, put up bond for a recruit who was arrested (the jail later changed the records to indicate someone else put up the bond, but that was only after the Macon Telegraph asked about it).

Sadly I agree. My comment was mostly facetious.

More thug-life news hit the street today with dwag arrest warrant for racing the night of the crash plus the driver’s BAC. It’ll be interesting if anything actually comes from this from the NCAA. Doubtful. They’re probably too busy looking over Sports Authority receipts trying to find a way to void our last ACC championship in basketball…

Since Jalen Carter is in line to make a LOT of money, I wonder if the families of the deceased will come after him given new information of racing and reckless driving. Obviously, A LOT of factors here.

Crazy how you are in line to make generational wealth, with the opportunity to have a professional sports career, and you would jeopardize it over drinking and racing your car.
