I think that would be a step down from Ole Miss. I really feel like VaTech is going to have to go with up and comers for the forseeable future.
Fuentes was 43-31 in about 6 seasons That comes to just under a .600 winning percentage. Hell, if Geoff did that he would get a lifetime contract extension. Just kidding, but I am mystified by what Virginia Tech and Miami are doing. They must have money coming out of their ears. Florida? Well, firing coaches is what they do besides Mullens doesn't exactly give off nice vibes. My Florida friends tell me that he is, shall we say, a bit abrasive in his dealings with underlings. He should have heeded someone's wise advice: "Be nice to those you meet in your climb to the top because you will likely meet them again when you come back down."

Florida is a pressure cooker of a job. Most, even successful coaches, can't last more than about 5 years there. It is not for the faint of heart.

Mullen is well-known as an a-hole. He is not well-liked and doesn't care what anyone thinks. When you put a guy like that in an environment like Florida, you get the mess they are in now. Dysfunction.

Personally, I hope to see Mullen working at Zaxby's with Ray Goff. They deserve each other.

Dean Smith, Mike Krzyzewski, Frank Beamer... The list is long, but they were in a time less effected by ADD and children pitching a fit demanding their way, now!
Actually Bill Foster had started turning the Duke BB program around before coach K got there. Let's just say Collins didn't inherit a "losing" program just one that ran an entirely different offense. The pay of those coaches 30 years ago was not as obscene as they have become. There is less patience with these big salaries. Win or go home.

Bear Bryant famously said he did not care what offense or what defense he ran. While he DID have a game philosophy, he was indifferent with how he got there. Do you remember reading about Bear Bryant whining about dropping the wishbone? No. He completely overhauled the offense MULTIPLE times. No "greatest transformation in the history of earth" ... just "let's do our job".

Let's look at Nick Saban. Listen to his interviews. He will tell you his Alabama teams today bear NO resemblance to those of 2007. He's changed offensive schemes at least 6 times. The current team (and it's offense) has almost nothing to do with game he played even 5 years ago.

My point is the game continues to evolve, especially with rule changes. Collins, or any coach, better get good at making adjustments and changing because the game is changing.

I agree. Collins made a call to overhaul his squad and that's fine. But he also owns the results. All nine of them.

If Kiffin stays at ole miss the idea of him scheming against Thacker is terrifying.
Thacker COLLINS , T STAN all needs to resign. For Embarrassing GT. Other programs are firing Head coaches DC and OC s have already looking forward to next Season. We are still coaching with the good ole boy system. Giving up 600 yds per game and losing

It's NEVER going to happen. Bud Peterson said it best: "As President of Georgia Tech, my ONLY obligation to athletics is to name the athletics director." That's it.

Peterson, like all Tech presidents, is compensated among certain BOR criteria AND ... research dollars. There is nothing in it for the Hill to spend ANY time on athletics. They are pretty much ... on their own.

It is more about recent trends than overall record. They have been around .500 the last 3 years and that is with probably 2 more cupcake games than we get. He also ran their recruiting into the ground. Firing him was the right call, but they are not that attractive a job right now, IMO.

Maybe you leave Vandy to go to VT. No way you leave Ole Miss to go to VT. Just won’t happen. Miami? Maybe, but not VT. It’s two or three steps down.

Not if you want to go to the playoffs. Ole MIss has LSU, Bama, ATM, and Auburn every year, and if they beat that murderers row, they've got the SECCG.

At VT or Miami you only need to run through the Coastal and get to the ACCCG undefeated. That's a much higher likelihood than at Ole Miss.

Also, VT spends more on football than Ole Miss does.

Miami wants Kiffin according to some pundits. He would have an easier time in the ACC having 10 win seasons. I don't think he is ready to leave Ole Miss yet but that would be a great coup for Miami.

Rumor is, LSU wants him. Kiffin‘s ultimate goal is to prop his feet up on Saban’s desk. (Don’t laugh. He’s the current favorite to succeed him.)

I completely forgot about the LSU opening. That's tailor made for Kiffin.

The SEC is the pinnacle of college football. That is why perennial playoff team Oklahoma (and their little brother Texas) are leaving an easier path to the playoffs to move to the SEC. You may be right that it would be an easier path to the playoffs, but you don't leave the SEC to go to VT. That's taking two or three steps down. These coaches want to do it in the SEC, not take a couple of steps down unless they're going to Clemson, Miami or FSU.

These teams like OU and Texas and coaches all know the playoffs will expand. Many of you are still living in the old paradigm wondering about “paths” to the playoffs. The path is about to expand which is great for everyone. If we get our act together maybe within a decade we can have a shot at a 12, 16, or 24 team playoff. The conferences are meeting in early December and will pass a 12 team model. My prediction is somewhere around 2028 to 2030 they’ll expand to 24. The on campus playoff games will prove to be so popular and money making endeavors for the communities that the conferences will quickly look to expand past 12. All the arguments about winning a conference or tradition are already out the window and hold no weight.

Each of those three had losing records their 1st 3 years. That was the point.

Expanding to 24 teams would require 5 weeks of playoffs. In addition to the CCGs, that would mean up to 18 games a season. I don't see college administrators allowing that to happen. In a few years, most likely NOT this winter as originally thought, they might move to 8, maybe even 12, which would push to 17 games.

Doubt they go to 12 any time soon after getting screwed in the negotiations by OU and TX moving to the SEC. If Collins remains our coach, we would likely only make it if they expand from 4 to 124 teams. But oh how Collins would crow if we snuck in at the No. 124 seed. ELITE!!! ;):)

FCS has 24 teams in the playoffs. In 2019, North Dakota State played 12 regular season games and 4 playoff games. (They had a first round bye), so 16 games total.

I don't know that FBS will ever get to 24 teams, but it would be doable. By that point it would probably be the P5 championship instead of the FBS championship, so 24 would be a very large percentage of the teams. If it were expanded to 16 teams, then each conference would have at least 2 or 3 teams in the playoffs, so the conference championship game wouldn't really matter much. 12 regular season games and 4 playoff games to determine a champion would be the same number of games that other NCAA divisions are playing already.

I think you can get to 16 games easy enough. Pushing past that is problematic for a number of reasons.

Vegas thinking it wouldn’t be a shock for a change to happen.

Cutcliffe should be on that list. He’s not getting fired, but he’s at the end of the line.

The bookies messed up. People would have taken that bet.

I’d like Goff back at UGA. They owe him another shot.

I know Meyer retired for a year, but he found Ohio State to be less of a pressure cooker than FL

Meyer is a guy I hope TStan has on his "I may need to call this guy" list. Meyer's daughter & son-in-law are Tech grads and former lettermen.
