I am not a football expert, so my observations are as a fan. What are the coaching issues that you think a new DC will fix? I think we have coaching issues for sure. But the kinds of issues we are having are more a result of a teaching style (ie no discipline and accountability to force discipline) than anything else. That is a culture problem. A new DC doesn’t fix that. Hope I am wrong though.
First, on passing plays we are not getting pressure on the QB. Either we do not have good enough players based on physical ability or they are not skilled enough technically. Or, the defensive plays we are running are not adequate given the personnel we have. We are one of the worst teams defensively on 3rd down.
Next, our secondary is too often confused as to which DB has coverage on receivers. Either they are not making the correct reads or they are simply not good enough. Or, the defensive plays we are running are not adequate given the personnel we have. As above, we are one of the worst teams defensively on 3rd down.
But, our defense on passing plays is not limited to 3rd down. We give up a lot of 20-25 yard plays on 1st & 2nd down as well.
Except when we try to sell out on pass defense and only rush three guys, our run defense, especially on early downs, looks pretty good. So, that makes me believe we have decent athletes. Why are we failing so frequently when we know the opponent is going to pass?
Tis puzzlement.
