I missed most of the game(I have a family member who’s on the staff for the Lakers, so we had a family get together to hopefully watch him win a ring. Didn’t happen :/). I will watch a replay probably tomorrow. My emotions are wiped from that Lakers loss. Sheeeeesh

Looking at the stats and highlights, it seems we kind of dominated the second half after trailing 21-7. Is that true or was it closer than the scoring indicates?

They outplayed us in the first half a good bit but we dominated hard in the second half. 5 TDs on 7 drives for us to 1 TD in 5 drives and a TO on special teams for them. In reality 39-27 would probably have been a more accurate score but it certainly felt like we were the better team. At least to me.

Clayton is gonna be a problem...for the other team. He's quickly shaking off the rust of being sidelined for 2 years, but you can see why he was considered a 5 star at one time. Even when he wasn't making the play, he was causing problems for blockers and causing havoc in the backfield.

Jordan Domineck with another impactful game at DE. Domineck + Clayton are gonna be a nice pass rushing duo at DE for us. 3 Sacks (AC 2, JD 1) from both of them. Keep in mind, Cunningham was not easy to get to...that guy is quick and fast. We probably have more sacks if it was most QBs. I can count another handful of times we should have put Cunningham in the dirt behind the LOS.

Defense held steady in the 4th quarter, but overall it wasn't a pretty game from them. Gave up 400+ yards, but the BIG difference in this game is they created turnovers and our offense capitalized off them. 3 fumbles recovered from the D.

LB is still a problem...they got picked on quite few times. Need more speed here, unfortunately, we got what we got this year.

DB play on contested balls was better, but still too many lapses in coverage.

Jeff Sims wasn't particularly accurate this game, but he made some big time throws, and some big time runs. On the Carter TD, Sims flicked his wrist as he had defenders in his face...that's the kind of talent he has. You can see how high his ceiling is if he eliminates the mental errors...which he will as he gets more experience. Best thing he did all game: NO TURNOVERS.

Speaking of no turnovers, our offense had no fumbles or interceptions. Tells you how much better of a team we actually are when we don't cut off our own legs.

Gibbs...just another game where he catches passes, makes some great runs, and scores TDs. 15 offensive touches, 120 total yards, and 2 TDs.

Get Dontae Smith the ball more! That guy just makes something happen when he has the ball.

Jalen Camp is turning into a really good possession receiver for us. Low key impactful plays and catches.

Special teams...still special.

Nice win, and nice to hit 40+ points. Hopefully that breaks the glass ceiling for us in terms of points. We're definitely gonna need it against Clemson.
Great overall assessment.

Worth noting, I don't recall a single dropped pass so credit to our receivers and backs. Love getting our backs more involved in the passing game.

Continued major kicking game issues - most High School teams have better kicking games - literally. Just no excuse to be this bad at a P5 program. Appears line broke down this time.

Agreed on LB. Love the heart and grit they showed in the second half but I keyed on Curry and could better understand what others have reported many times - unbelievably slow - was spying on their QB on many plays (right idea) but he's way too slow for that role. Our Defense will get better once we improve our speed and ability to shed blocks at LB across the board. Very clear weak link and very directly related to all the first downs given up on 3rd and long.

Dline improved as game continued but their QB had too much time too often.

Oline made great strides as game continued. Liked that CDP called more conservative pass plays and emphasized the run game more.

Great team W in the end - great to see these kids, who have been working hard for many months, put it all together and get a W on a nationally televised game under the lights at Bobby Dodd...

I will say, this game looked wayyyy more impressive than the past 3 games. We cleaned up our Offense and made some great mid-game adjustments. I was sweatin in the student section watching the first half and seeing them run all over us. But in the 2nd half we tightened up our Defense and stopped the run game. Kudos to Thacker for adjusting and making good calls.

Another great point. Turnovers. +3. But not only plus 3, we had 0. ZERO. Count em up, 0. and we converted on their mistakes. 19 points, the difference in scores. This is what playing efficiently looks like.

Final point. Penalties, this looked like a much more disciplined team. Less false starts and questionable penalties on our D and O. I will say I think that Roughing the Passer was a pansy call imo. But still, we looked way more professional, I can't tell if it was bc we are at home or bc the coaching staff worked it in these past two weeks, but I don't care. It was CLEAN.

Game Ball on Offense: Jahmyr Gibbs, the man carried the team on his back when needed. Jeff Sims had a good game, but Gibbs was great on catches and running.

Game Ball on Defense: Honestly the whole D earned a win this game. It was a great team effort and I can't single out a guy who is more deserving than another. They all played their hearts out and gave it their all in the 2nd half to make this game winnable.
Nit picking a bit but our Freshman tackle (who is doing a great job overall) keeps starting too early - I think he had two false starts again and could have been called a couple other times - coaching/practice opportunity...

It was all about our guys creating turnovers and our Offense executing well to take advantage of those turnovers. And no turnovers for us with limited penalties.

Man, that was fun. For a minute I thought we were going to be +3 in TO’s and somehow lose, but the team stepped up big. Gibbs is going to be a great player.

Gotta clean up the kicking game. It’s kind of a joke right now

Wanted that call too but it was objectively not indisputable video evidence...
Man, I disagree. From one camera angle maybe not. But if you piece two angles together it’s clean that that dude fumbled the call into the end zone. They should have a panel of like 7 guys watch these things and make the call based on the majority so that one guy that can’t look at two different angles to determine two different key points within the call doesn’t screw it up

Honestly, I’m glad we won, but I really don’t feel any different about GT football than after our two losses. It’s all about turnovers. This was the exact same game as UCF except we got the turnovers that turned it into a win by 20. In reality we all know those were two even teams. Our future is bright because we have a legit P5 QB and Collins will get us players thru recruiting and the portal. Gibbs is the best football player we’ve had on campus since Calvin and it won’t be shocking to see him be the 2nd highest drafted player in GT history.

Our defense is just not ready to be a legit threat yet. They missed at minimum 2 additional TD’s with wide open guys. The 3rd play of the game was a TD and we had no one near him. They exploited our lack of LB play and gashed us up the middle all game. That will only be fixed thru recruiting. They shouldn’t have punted at all because we couldn’t stop them. The only thing that stopped them were turnovers. Our fan base knows what that looks like.

But the worst part of the game by far was the 15 minute shat show of Allison on her 1998 cell phone blathering on and on for 2 entire series. The women didn’t take a breath and nothing she said made any sense. Im pretty even keeled bit that was finger nails on a chalk board.

Good morning!

After a night’s rest, I can say that it’s still great to get a win.

I’d like to say that Thacker and Patenaude called a better game than they did against Syracuse, but I really couldn’t tell. We got the Friday night broadcast and camera crew, and it showed—or, more accurately, it didn’t. If you wanted to watch the offensive and defensive lines, you got that view a lot, but I rarely saw a big picture where I could see a play develop on either side. I wanted to watch what the corners were doing, and if they were having the same technique problems that they had last week. I wanted to see the routes develop in our passing plays. I had no luck.

On defense, the safeties did a much better job keeping receivers in front of them. That’s even more impressive because Louisville as much more team speed than Syracuse. Cunningham is faster than most anyone we have in the front 7, so assigning a linebacker as a spy didn’t work out great. I hope that’s something Thacker files away for later reference.

We did a better job holding on until someone showed up—or seemed to—and saw some gang tackles that bailed us out.

Louisville’s offensive line seemed about the same as Syracuse’s, but stronger in the middle at G-C-G. Our DTs had to gut out a game.

On offense, we started the game and had some routes break into the clear, and didn’t run out the route. We left a long TD or two on the table in the first half. Sims was overexcited in the first half, and the ball was sailing on him. We had a couple of series fail to convert because he was overthrowing the open man. If he’d started more even and level, we’d have probably gone into halftime tied or in the lead, with a better rested defense.

Our offensive line was not getting a great push against their D line. It especially showed up on the 3 and out inside our 5.

I also think we had a lot more called handoffs that looked like options, but there was no option. I think Patenaude was simplifying decisions for Sims, and the mistakes went down, but some big play opportunities stayed on the shelf.

Special teams—we lucked out. The kicks were generally good, especially on kickoffs, but we weren’t keeping our lanes in coverage. Louisville was fast, and we’re really lucky they didn’t break a return all the way. The fake punt was solidly executed.

Penalties were way way down, and it wasn’t just the crew. I don’t recall our receivers having an illegal shift or illegal formation penalty this week.

For those keeping score at home, oh wait I’m not really keeping score but going from memory. But if anybody wants to go back and double check me, please do. Since the start of divisional play in the ACC, we’re something like 14-2 against the rotating opponents.

Something I liked on the 2 minute drill before the end of the first half was the time out call. A bunch of Sims' other in interceptions came in similar situations in our previous games (I remember one clearly during the FSU game). It didn't make sense clock management wise, but I think it helped level him out and keep him making good decisions.

I think CDP did much better this game. I haven't rewatched the game, but I know early on there was more running plays and screens called, which we have been saying is necessary due to the young QB, as well as the strength of the team.

I see a bunch of guys getting after the LB play, but I think we need some good DT's. If this staff can recruit one stud at DT the whole defense changes. I'm not saying none of the blame falls on the LB's, but a good DT would help immensely. Still it's great that we have some decent DE's.

Curry's a great leader, but he was outmatched by the speed of Cunningham. It wasn't even close. It appeared in the second half we had Curry bail into a middle zone a lot more and had a safety spy Cunningham. I'll have to re-watch it to be sure (and I don't claim to be an expert by any means), but that might have been one of the 2nd half adjustments that helped.

To be honest it appeared that our guys were not prepared on defense at the start of the game. Is Thacker a better in-game coach than prep coach? Do such things exist?

Poor Duke.... NOT! eff em
Yea that was one of my points when those predictions came out. Duke has finished dead last in the entire conference 12 of the last 25 years. They’re well on their way to 13 out of 26. Why not start with them as a guess? The next closest ACC team was Virginia, who has finished last 4 times during that period. We never have. Even Clemson did once. DISRESPECT.
