FWIW, Governors on the East Coast and the West Coast are putting together joint committees to figure out re-opening.

On the East Coast states that are involved are NY, NJ, CT, RI, DE and PA.
On the West Coast the states are CA, OR, WA.

IN both cases they are setting up groups that will include a public health and economic official from each state. The Chief of Staff for each Governor will also be involved.
The committees will look at data and experience from other areas to decide how best to start reopening.

Since the Federal Government also has committees that include both, this could get to be an interesting constitutional question......suddenly, the issue of States' Rights rears its ugly head again, right? Where is Lincoln when you need him to enforce order on all these United States?

Seems this issue of states v feds would have been a bigger deal when shutting things down than opening them up. We sort of proved it could be done only a month ago... without "serious" conflict.

Ya’ll let us know when you see your direct deposit money or unemployment. My wife (nurse) had a tremendous reduction in hours, so she filed. It was accepted 14 days ago, but still no update. System is down (I assume it’s overloaded), so she can’t login to check status. Haven’t seen the cash payment yet.

I'm so glad that the liquor stores and breweries are essential here in Virginia. I get a growler or two a week just to support local business. It's my patriotic duty.

A vaccine would be calculated to generate a massive immune response. But … we won't know the full parameters until we have one. We can probably get one faster for COVID-19 because, unlike SARS and MERS, a vaccine batch screw-up is a lot less likely to kill people. We're lucky this one is only as lethal as it is. If it were like SARS or MERS we would be talking about really massive losses. Here's a semi-informative link I posted before:

Answer = we're a lot closer then we could have expected, but there's awhile to go.

We'll see how it shakes out. I agree we are closer than we could have expected but we still don't know when we'll get there. Regardless, enjoy the day as best we can. This too shall pass.

I agree SARS and MERS were much more deadly and awful so there is more margin in the vaccine. I haven't seen the data to know the COVID-19 severity of infection correlated to antibody generation. It is still very early. We'll learn a lot more in the coming months. But the link was not encouraging. Back to SARS/MERS, MERS had a 34% fatality rate (https://www.who.int/emergencies/mers-cov/en/ ) and I've heard that the fatalities bled at the eyes. (Only something I saw on the internet so it must be true; no link). So it's really good the transmission rate was so much lower.

So last week my church (very small, about 50 people on a good Sunday) contacted our sheriff and told him our interpretation of Kemp’s order allowed us to still have an Easter service if we followed the order. We roped off pews and assigned seating more than 6’ apart by family unit and administered communion by family unit.

Two armed sheriff personnel, who I think are civilians deputized for the occasion, supervised. It was surreal. I’m not what I’d consider a huge right winger but damn, I never thought I’d see the day that grown adults worshipping IN COMPLIANCE WITH SAFETY PROTOCOLS would be supervised by armed government officials in this country.

We need to have a serious conversation about what emergencies mean.

For those interested the Cato Institute has a webinar on Coronavirus emergencies and the Constitution. It’s pretty informative. My understanding is that the states do have inherent police powers like this. Our remedies may not be legal but political. I for damn sure am never voting for this sheriff again, but he’s retiring.

I told my kids they should have some very interesting conversations in school in the ensuing years about Constitutional Rights. And when I type this, I'm not saying we should have ignored the directives and just gone about our business. But at the same time, saying you can remove the ability for people to peacefully assemble or practice their religion, that's just not true. You can make directives and plead for people to do what's in the best interest of the country for a reasonable period of time. But the notion they're arresting a guy for paddleboarding by himself in the ocean, arresting a Dad for throwing a ball with his kid alone in an open field, and other obnoxious instances - this is just craziness. Those arrests and prosecutions would/should never stand up in a court of law. And if they do, then the judge should be impeached.

South Korea is closing in on 200 people having contracted the virus a second time, after having fully recovered the first time. Scientists over there are trying to figure out if its a new strain. As I understand it, there are already like a dozen strains of it.

At a cost of over $10 trillion when you count QE, this is going to be the most expensive ~100,000 lives saved in the history of the human race.

I can tell you my town will be devastated beyond recognition by the economic carnage. Small businesses and bars will not recover.

If it’s like this everywhere, you’re going to see an even bigger divide between the haves/have nots, however you want to slice it. A great many of my friends who work for the government and big corporations and have therefore much greater security are being very smug and condescending about “public health” when everyone else who must render their sustenance from the metaphorical field is in famine.

The US currently sits at 585,000 cases. The number to watch at end of day is 605,000. That would match yesterday's total of new cases. The further we stay below that number at the end of the day, the more of a trend downward we make in new cases.

That's what happens when the government picks winners and losers and does these sorts of bailouts. Its obnoxious.
