Such bad timing for us...

Perhaps. Pretty sure Fogler's firm has been paid their fee by GT and aren't likely to be hired by the Institute again any time soon. If they connect BG with UIC they get revenue and don't likely lose any future revenue, no? (I'm half-kidding so don't rip me too badly).

I've come to the conclusion if you are using a search firm all you are really doing is trying to buy plausible deniability if it goes wrong. Hey, this firm said this guy was a good coach - how was I supposed to know he was crap.

Wouldnt that make you look even less competent?

Pretty unimpressive list of vacancies this year so far. That can always change, but right now AL is by far the best open position and it is at best a mid tier 2 job. If you assume similar salaries GT is a better job than AL.

Trying to pick the 2nd best open job after that right now is actually hard - maybe Charlotte, maybe DePaul with the right guy.

Depending upon what opens after the NCAA Tourney, there may not be alot of movement by the 'top' mid major types that could move on.

Interesting that TN hasn't opened. Wonder if they are going to try to hang onto Tyndall.

Sort of a win/lose for GT. On the one hand if GT had opened, if it could have offered a competitive salary it would have easily been the best opening of those currently known. On the other hand, if the pool continues to look like this it is more likely that fewer of the 'top' movers actually take another job rather than simply wait another year.

I would like to keep Herrion. He was a really strong recruiter as an asst who is well known in areas outside where we have been focused on and he has HC experience to boot.
if Dollar gets the Henderson job it will be interesting to see who is brought on to replace him. Have to figure it will be one of 2 types - either a guy with strong GA connections, or someone who is regarded as a strong offensive mind.

Carmody is probably a good fit at Holy Cross. Has background in that area and his Princeton style might work well there.

This podcast has some talk on the GT situation at the 25 min mark. The best comment is probably the one about GT is stuck in a bad vortex they can't get out of. All 3 of the podcasters basically said GT couldn't fire Gregory because you can't afford to be paying 3 coaches. Unfortunately I tend to agree and think we are likely in this spot for at least 2 more years.

The Syracuse talk at the start of the podcast is quite interesting to listen to.
Also talk about the likelihood of Texas coming open in the next couple of weeks.

Wow, what a day. Busiest day at work in a while and found out about Boeheim via a text from my brother. @RamblinRed, quoting your link because there's a lot of misinformed speculation in there. Couldn't get all the way through because they lost me quickly:
  • Assistant coach Mike Hopkins was re-confirmed as successor pretty quickly today
  • Athletic Director Daryl Gross stepping down is going to be a factor in Syracuse sustaining success? Comical. The guy is more clueless than LazyAD. He made what has literally been ranked by some as the worst head football coaching hire in the history of college football in Greg Robinson. He has nothing to do with building the Syracuse basketball brand as that existed prior to his 10-year term. Prior to the latest scandal, most fans were ready to say good riddance. The guy has never controlled his image of being pompous and ignorant. No recruit knows his name. I think the radio hosts are looking for something to talk about there.
  • Simply put, Boeheim leaving is a big deal. There's no way around it. No one knows what will happen after he leaves. That said Syracuse has been planning for it for a while by naming Hopkins successor ~7 years ago. I agree a 3 year retirement warning is kind of odd, but I think there are as many pluses as minuses. Recruits now know what they're getting into, so we'll have a sense before Boeheim leaves how that affects things.
  • Honestly, there is a good chance I'll regret feeling/thinking this way, but my curiosity for the post-Boeheim era piqued after this last scandal. Something tells me though that Syracuse will still average 20K+ fans, much like the fallout or lack thereof at Penn State football, and therefore they'll be alright. The team is too important to folks up there, it's the thing that keeps spirits high in the brutal winter, and now that the program is in a safe conference in the ACC I think it will take multiple successive bad coaching hires for the passion to permanently wane.
Clearly there's no possible way for me to have an unbiased perspective. Curious what others think.

Recruits now know Boeheim will be there through probation, so he'll be able to fill his limited spots with higher caliber kids, since they'll still want to play for him.

Also allows him to help set the foundation for Hopkins, who the kids will also know will be there coming out of probation.

Personally, I think it adds recruiting stability, assuming it really plays out this way.

Silver lining from the NCAA fallout... Hopkins gets a 9-game trial run next year. Boeheim's not allowed contact with the program nor recruits during that stretch. The results could allow Syracuse to reaffirm its decision or start contingency planning.
