Good question. It's gotta be one or the other. So, you are saying that last night’s refs were just incompetent.

You left out corrupt (bribed) as a possible root cause!Good question. It's gotta be one or the other.
Knowing the rules and presenting your case has no relevance on judgement calls. If it is a “rules mistake or interpretation”, then yes. The only thing a coach can do is “work the refs”. It’s a subtle art, not achieved (except occasionally) by a complete blowup. My take is that Key seems to be reserved and not question most poor calls against us and then blows up when he has had enough of the poor officiating. As a head coach, he needs to know the rules as well or better than the officials and be able to present his case effectively on all poor calls during the game without pissing off the officials. Yes, it is a tough task. Kirby seems to be a master at this.
BTW, I love our coach!
But if they were just incompetent, wouldn't the terrible calls go both ways? As many times as the broadcast crew called out the bad calls and the rules analyst came out and said it was the wrong call, I don't recall any of those going our way. I'm not saying there weren't SOME minor missed calls in our favor as it is not realistic to think the refs get everything right, but it was clear as to which team was getting the benefit throughout the game from the refs. So, you are saying that last night’s refs were just incompetent.
IMO when you have conference refs they become friends with coaches because they’re on the field with them all season for years. It’s human nature to show favoritism towards friends rather it’s intentional or not. If we can fly college football players all over the country we can fly the refs all over the country. It’s just a few games when the heavyweights play like Ga/GT have big 12 refs come in for that game. Games like GT/Duke have ACC refs to keep cost down. Rivalries and big games fly differently refs in to call the games. So, you are saying that last night’s refs were just incompetent.
I think it is telling that at one point in the fourth quarter, there was a time out. During that period, the on-field announcer gave away a prize package from Konecuh sausage. The winner was a Georgia Tech fan. The announcer said over the loudspeaker “well at least that’s one thing the refs can’t take away from you.” Evidently even the Birmingham Bowl people were aware of how poorly the game was officiated.
There is too much money involved now for amateur barney fife's to cost people money and coaches their jobs for bs calls.I didnt watch the second half, but I have seen clips of some of the ridiculously bad calls the refs made. At this point, I feel like the horrible officiating is up there with NIL and the transfer portal in terms of ruining college football. It's almost 2025, there have been cameras all over the field and booth review for a good while now, there is no reason this crap should still be happening, and yet nothing seems to be done to fix it. I'm really tired of it all ruining the game, to the point I'm glad I didn't watch the second half because its just a few more hours wasted being angry at the game being botched. It's like playing Monopoly with someone you know every time is going to knock the board off the table and mess everything up because they aren't doing well - even if you win you eventually just don't want to play because it gets ruined over and over.
That was the funniest part of the game. Got a good chuckle from me as I was walking out of the stadium. Another time he even said "come see Santa, I promise he won't throw a flag on you".I think it is telling that at one point in the fourth quarter, there was a time out. Would the officiating be better if NCAA refs were full-time employees and made $10-12k per game instead of the $3-4k that the Power Conferences now pay?As a NCAA ref, myself, refs don’t have agendas
Preach it brother. GT fans lose their minds over officials having agendas. They don't! It's an excuse for losers! Are bad calls made, absolutely, refs are humans! A coach losing it and cussing out officials is never acceptable! It cost more than 15 yards. Key's team lost composure right after he did and it cost GT on the field! As a NCAA ref, myself, refs don’t have agendas

Maybe not bribery but certainly incentivised by the powers that now control college football. You left out corrupt (bribed) as a possible root cause!
That was him with the grinch shown next to him.Maybe the refs yesterday didn’t haven’t an agenda, but from what I saw, they also shouldn’t have a job.
During one of the many “Ref hou suck” chants during the game, the referee (head official) was shown on the Jumbotron and he started laughing. I think he was enjoying his day.
There was a lot if booing during this guy's broadcasts, I didn't understand why. That was the funniest part of the game. Got a good chuckle from me as I was walking out of the stadium. Another time he even said "come see Santa, I promise he won't throw a flag on you".
