The Wildcard race in the NL is darned close
The Braves only have 18 games remaining. So going 6-12 (95-67) would only clinch the 2nd WC because if the Cubs 20-0 (96-66) and Nationals 20-0 (99-63) win every game from here on, they would pass the Braves. However Arizona(94-68)/Philadelphia (94-68)/Milwaukee(94-68) could win every game and not pass the Braves as long as the Braves win 6. If the Braves went 5-13 (94-68), then Arizona/Philadelphia/Milwaukee could tie the Braves for the second WC by wining every game from here on out.I want to make this less complicated because I think you are overthinking.
If the Braves go 6-14, they clinch 1st W.C., no matter what any team in the N.L. does.
They can all go hypothetically and impossibly be undefeated. If you look at the original post you are taking me to task with, I said 6 games for making playoffs, 11 with Nationals for Eastern. It can never go higher than that, only less, depending on Braves wins and other contenders losses. Cubs could get passed, magic # will be less than 6 for Atlanta vs. the/those team(s) taking over in the W.C. Standings.
Close your eyes Fred(time to dream). The Nats. would need to go 16-4(.800 pct.)if Atlanta only wins 6 games, to take the Division. 15-5(.750 pct.)would allow the Braves to win the East.
I think the Braves have a good chance of going 102-60 or 103-59.The Braves only have 18 games remaining. If the Braves went 5-13 (94-68), then Arizona/Philadelphia/Milwaukee could tie the Braves for the second WC by wining every game from here on out.
Buzz was correct on the numbers. 11 for the east outright, 6 for the second wildcard outright. Magic numbers are always for outright. So which is the magic number, the one to tie or win outright?
I'm all for celebrating the Phillies and Mets eliminations! Only the Marlins are eliminated currently. Magic number for Mets NL East elimination is 4.Now that we know the magic number to both win and tie for division and WC..... I guess we should celibrate 4 times ! Yea
Unless we want to also celibrate teams getting eliminated, then i think it's 7 celibrations if my math is correct.
(Note- i'm assuming the mets and below are already eliminated)
Here's a cool chart. I don't think I know what it means... but lots of logos... cool.
