This is paywalled, but an interesting view of how NBA teams build their rosters.

2024 NBA team position rankings: Projecting all 30 teams’ depth charts

Boston has 2 guards, 2 forwards, and a center. That’s what Stoudamire saw last. There’s also the idea of positional flexibility—you aren’t a center who plays point, but you can do forward things.

Here’s the definitions they used

  • Point guard: Primary pick-and-roll ballhandlers, playmakers, passers, pace-setters and caretakers.
  • Shooting guard: On- or off-ball players with shooting ability across various levels, especially off the catch from 3.
  • Small forward: Primary perimeter defender, fast-break finisher and half-court cutter.
  • Power forward: More size than a wing, especially to rebound on both ends, without always having the primary interior responsibilities of a center.
  • Center: Rim protection and screening, especially in pick-and-rolls.
That might leave a role for the bigs.

So, Doryan is coming along faster than I expected. Could he be another Ndongo?
I do not think this changes what we expected. Powell was always going to be a rotational player. I have said Doryan would be also by January. Let's not get too hyped by this news. Rothstein is seeking clicks, but there is always a bit of truth in his posts. Does this make us a NCAA possible team? Maybe. But we still need to do it on the court.

I was gonna say, let's not anoint DO based off of a Jon Rothstein tweet. His "source" probably saw one practice or a series of plays and said that.

Doryan is going to do what most freshmen do. He's going to have some great moments, and I'm sure there will be some head scratching moments.

Like you, my hope is that by ACC play, he's ready to take a step forward. He and Powell can be a strong rotation.

This time last year there were similar whispers that Nait George would crack the rotation. Just sayin'.
I do not remember hearing any of those whispers last year until Nate surprisingly started against Mississippi State. He did not play at all in our 1st three games and subbed against Cincinnati (where he had 3 TOs and no assists). That was what was such a shock. No one expected him to be anything more than a backup with potential down the road.

Nait George should be forever grateful to Amaree Abram. Abram's poor work ethic and inability to throw it in the ocean opened the door for Nait.

Credit Nait for taking full advantage of it and never looking back, but I do not recall any whispers about him getting PT, much less cracking the rotation.

This is an excellent point. Abram came with what appeared to be an attitude that he was a star. Of course, that didn't play well with CDS.

Panther reported it on the Hive when formal Fall practices began.

Maybe so, but...

Whatever Panther may have said, Nate was not playing at all when Fall practice ended. When he announced his commitment most people thought CDS had a scholarship to give and George was available. IIRC he had one other offer. From Sam Houston State. He looked more like a project than a starter.

We may be hanging his jersey from the rafters at some time, but he is still not a star by my ratings. A solid starter who can help other players be better. He needs to improve his 3-point shot and be more protective of each possession. I like him a lot, but let's not go overboard with our expectations. Or where he started his college basketball journey.

I think I recall Nait playing in an exhibition game last season… and he looked completely lost and overwhelmed. I remember thinking he didn’t look like D1 talent. Luckily, that first impression turned out to be waaayyy off base.

For a freshmen PG last season Nait was very good. He improved as the year progressed. His ability to score on penetration improved greatly over the course of the season. If he can consistently hit the floater he flashed late last season he will be a handful on pick and rolls.

It will be interesting to see how he plays this season. I expect with McCollum as another PG they will cause problems for opponents. How they play defense will go a long way in determining our season.

So your hypothesis is that no one on the inside had a clue that George was any good until he started playing?

No, that is not what I am saying. I am saying people outside the program were surprised by the sudden starting role for Nate in the Miss St game. Is Panther an "insider?"
Panther is on campus a lot and has some access. Someone on the inside told Panther before the season started that the kid could play. He reported that in one of his patented bullets in a post. It turned out to be correct. George can play.

If Onwuchkwa and Powell have shown good things in practice, that is a good thing. Both were well regarded recruits out of High School. Neither would represent the big surprise that George was.
