My interpretation is that the point of emphasis so far is better defense. Since defense is about energy and effort and it looks like a deep rotation is possible if not likely, then maybe more broadly Stoudamire wants a team that plays with much better energy, effort and toughness than what we saw last season. We may be a pressure and tempo team.

Coach said he wants outsiders to see his Freshman because they can all play. So, I do look forward to seeing all of them play.

We get questions about fund raising and Dikembe Mutombo but no questions about McCollum ... sheesh.

Mutombo will not be a regular starter. He will play vs certain matchups. CDS believes in having guys able to hit 3s and penetrate to the basket. Only one big is needed on the court.

Defensive improvement will be the key to this season. Last year our guys got beat badly playing their man on defense.
I don’t think that Mutombo has proven he’s a quality starter, although I obviously hope he figures out how to do that. I believe he is purely bench strength.

For a freshmen PG last season Nait was very good. He improved as the year progressed. His ability to score on penetration improved greatly over the course of the season. If he can consistently hit the floater he flashed late last season he will be a handful on pick and rolls.

It will be interesting to see how he plays this season. I expect with McCollum as another PG they will cause problems for opponents. How they play defense will go a long way in determining our season.
This was my main takeaway last year - how much Nait improved in such a short time period. The first few games I cringed when he shot, and then he had the ball in his hands to beat UNC. I know he was a bit inconsistent, but still improved dramatically. Not to mention 4.7 -2.1 turnovers to assists.

I'll take a slightly different slant - not sure if it was fatigue or not but for sure teams adjusted to us after he started to have success with the pick and roll with Ndongo. Aggressive traps off the pick and lots of help on the primary option. No more free flowing drive and rim runs like we saw against Duke. That made us have to go to the "others" as secondary options and that is where we had issues - especially at the 4. So not trying to die on whether it was fatigue or other teams adjustments - though I personally think it was more adjustments - but your concept that we are more loaded with scorers in the backcourt helps when the ball moves from the initial action - but to me the key will be do we have a 4 who can drain a corner 3 when the other team helps aggressively on the Ndongo rim run.

I may be repeating part of this, but early in the season CDS may flip the starting lineup a few times to see how guys react to it. Expect all five scholarship guards to get starts at the 1, 2, and 3. All five can play, so there's no reasonable chance any will sit for long. I believe a reasonable prediction for minutes 25-30 each for Nate, McCollum, and Reeves, with Terry and Mustaf getting 15-20 mpg. I do not think CDS wants any of these guys playing 35 minutes early in the year.

The 4-5 spots are the mystery when it comes to minutes. We have lots of bodies and only 80 minutes to share. And, I think Baye will get 30 of them. CDS talked about O'Brien and Doryan, but I still think Powell will get minutes at the 4. Will Mutombo play more than garbage minutes? Where does Sutton fit in?

I know CDS wants to stress defense, so what does that mean for Souare? Can his lack of offense be covered by four other guys?

Also, I only 12 scholarship players. Did Thompson get the 13th?

For the first time in years I feel we have ACC level guys 8 or 9 deep. No reason to have guys hanging on the hem of their shorts late in games. Expect CDS to move guys in and out.

Aren't the limits changing to 15 on scholarships at some point? Maybe next year? Just allows the blue bloods to hoard players that otherwise would be available. Transfer portal might level that somewhat.

On the Site, “Coaches and Staff” includes 16 people individually pictured - certainly seems like the resources are being invested. Don’t recall that many being spotlighted. Seems clear that all the indicators convey the program is trending in the right direction to sustain basketball relevancy once again. I don’t have to fabricate my optimism, I genuinely feel it this time.
