I just watched the game. GT up 25-5 and that thought creeps in......holy crap what if they blew this and Pitt starts making triples.

Then they turned into Pitt again. Haywood looked.....uninspired.

It also might be time for me to admit AD is a player. I’ll think on that...

I only saw a couple of minutes of the game. Mostly when it was out of reach.

Great to win a road game in the ACC. Awesome.

My only byotch is how the hadies did Haywood not score. He has to come to life for us going forward.

I suspect Stallings will at least get a 3rd year. Got to imagine the buyout to fire him after 2 seasons is really high. He also has a team of mostly FR, sort of cruel to fire a coach before allowing them to grow a little - also something that coaches would likely pay attention to if you fire a coach after 2 seasons.
I think they could fire Stallings after this year if they can afford it. You'd give most coaches that oppty to let his FR grow a little, but:
1) let's wait until we see how many of his 7 scholarship FR don't transfer.
2) the AD that hired him already skipped town.
3) the Pitt fan base were already showing apathy by the ACCT last year.
4) he's legit an *******. Good offensive coach, total lack of social skills & a jerk.

The Pitt stint on his wikipedia page is pretty great.

A little bit of confidence has gone a long way for him. We are also using him in the right way now. You can tell he feels confident that what he does adds value even when he isn't converting.

The development of AD is simply amazing to me. earlier this year, I didn't even want him to step onto the court unless we were up 20 (which kinda never happened this year) because he was a turnover machine. But he has become someone other teams have to at least think about a little. Still no reason to guard him outside of 8 feet, BUT we now rarely let him roam out there and I'm pretty sure we've told him NOT to shoot form out there except if the shot clock is expiring. Getting more points out of him than Lammers....how many folks saw that coming? (Not me)

Haywood will be alright...give him time.

I think we now have 4 serviceable ACC players in Lammers, Okogie, Alvarado and AD (did I say that out loud?). Haywood and Alston are splitting time in the last spot, with neither yet at the level we need. Tadic is Tadic and really is best off the bench. They have finally persuaded him to stop shooting jump shots and drive, drive, drive...he is a superb finisher.

The game Thursday night will be interesting. This team seems to be growing rapidly.

Has last year's magic finally returned?

We’ve improved a lot since a couple of weeks ago, when we first played Notre Dame. AD has been a find. We had 3 1/2 starters then, now we have six players who can reasonably play and not be a vulnerability for us.

Plus/minus stats (offense/defense/net) are the right three columns. Wright has improved also. Would be nice to see Alford and Cole raise their games.

The 5 players in net +/- are exactly the ones I want playing the most. Ben will only get better when he is more healthy. Gueye is on the uptick, and CGB is not full strength at the moment. He might not play up to that rating anyway in the ACC slate.

Some of the comments on AD may be underselling what he has done in this win streak:
16 pts 8 reb,
8 and 6
14 and 9
7 and 5
Tech has to have a minimum of 3 players a night with at least that average of 10-11 pts and 6-7 rebounds to compete in the conference.

I think AD is being used in a manner that has taken some of the around the basket game away from Lammers (well offensively I mean). So he is getting some of the buckets Lammers would have had last year. This is an interesting decision. I think it clearly plays to AD's strengths, and best to develop a big man in to out. Then, it may be helping Lammers in terms of his fatigue level since they don't sub for him. Possibly he runs the length of the floor less often under this set-up? Also it may incidentally be helping Ben prepare for graduation and a pro career. Green lighting him to develop moves from the foul line, as well as his fade away and range, is his next step in professional development. It can't be said enough, Reveno truly is a big whisperer. Q, Lammers, and AD, all impressive.

Is it okay to think Alvarado is one of my favorite Tech players all-time? I mean, I can't really think that this soon right? I meant to post after the Yale game about his Nesbitt imitation early in the game. He got his pocket picked, and immediately channeled Nesbitt by snatching the ball back. He didn't blow up the stat sheet today, but he just makes good decisions at a better rate than the average freshman pg. And, many of them who nail back to back 3s and have 8 points in the first 4 minutes, would then simply call their own number for the rest of the half. Finally, defensive intensity by him has always been fantastic, and immediate vocal leadership as well (see his reaction to AD's Technical).

Haywood ran point for a stretch didn't he? To get Jose rest. First time I noticed that since Curt's return. He will shoot his way out of this rust.

I just watched the game. GT up 25-5 and that thought creeps in......holy crap what if they blew this and Pitt starts making triples.

Then they turned into Pitt again. Haywood looked.....uninspired.

It also might be time for me to admit AD is a player. I’ll think on that...

I think AD kept reading on GTSwarm about GT signing 4 this year, looked around and said, "Hmm, extra time in the gym might be a good idea."

AD progression is very important both for the rest of this season and year.
The last 3 ACC games he is avg 9.7ppg, 7 rpg. Last season Quinton avg 9.6 ppg and 7.3 rpg in ACC action.
if AD can give us anywhere close to 10 and 7 this is going to be a much better team than I thought 2 weeks ago. His recent ability to score from the low post is going to force teams to at least play him straight instead of playing off him, which will open more space on the floor for other players.

Also, as long as he continues to improve I see him being the starting 5 next season. Next year's team is likely to look a fair bit different than this year. AD is more athletic than Lammers so I can see a much more uptempo kind of squad with the potential depth we will have on the perimeter. Likely play alot of small ball unless one of Moses, Evan and Kristian really are ready to ball out next year.

One last thought on this game. I'm sort of happy we went 3-15 from three. Let's save those makes for when UVA comes to town.

AD's certainly stepped up and made an impact in ACC play. However, he's got to control his temper. He was suspended earlier this year for fighting in practice, he picked up a 'T' yesterday which ultimately caused him to foul out, and there was another instance (forgive me, I can't recall which game) where his reaction to a foul call probably warranted another 'T'. I just don't want to see his emotions get the better of him in a pivotal moment and cost us a game. I love his passion, fight, and aggression, but I want to see him control it a little bit more.

ALSTON, not Alford. Sorry (duh, I don't think I can even blame autocorrect).

Umm, where can I go to figure out what all the column headings mean?

I'm glad FightWinDrink shared https://www.basketball-reference.com/about/glossary.html

If you ever want to paste one of the tables, there's a share link above each table. First sort, then click share, then remove or sort columns, then grab the BBCode "code" link. It turns out, that "BBEdit code"the easiest way to get a table in this forum.

Even though it's an "advanced stats" table, the left hand columns are pretty basic (G=games played, MP=minutes played, eFG% = effective field goal % with 3pts being worth more, assists, steals, blocks, turnovers, etc.). Then, you get stuff like USG% (Usage), which is how many plays "go through" that player (Lammers has a lot go through him, and Tad does when he's in).
OWS and DWS are offensive and defensive win shares (https://www.basketball-reference.com/about/ws.html); how much credit each player gets for a win. WS is overall win shares. Alvarado and Lammers are pretty heavy there, too. WS/40 is prorated for 40 minutes, so that you can compare someone who has to stay in all game vs someone who plays for just over a half.

On the right side is BPM : Box Plus/Minus (available since the 1973-74 season in the NBA); a box score estimate of the points per 100 possessions that a player contributed above a league-average player, translated to an average team. Please see the article About Box Plus/Minus (BPM) for more information.
They aren't ACC comparisons, they're NCAA comparisons. So, you want all your people to be above average--at least out on the court.

For comparison, here's UVA (They're deeper on the bench than we are):

Code:
Rk Player PER TS% eFG% 3PAr FTr PProd ORB% DRB% TRB% AST% STL% BLK% TOV% USG% OWS DWS WS WS/40 OBPM DBPM BPM

I think we can tolerate this a bit for the rest of the year, but he definitely needs to learn for next year. I can't really tell whether his behavior has impacted the rest of the team. Sometimes a Dennis Rodman or Rasheed Wallace type fires people up.

What is interesting to me is that he did not *look* visibly upset to my old, tired eyes. I grant he likely said something 'unkind' to the ref, but wonder if that could just be a competitive edge coming out, and not real anger issues. He seemed to immediately take responsibility and I thought I read his lips to say "my bad" to the bench when it happened.
