Regardless of how well he does I see this as a 2-4 year hire. If he does well he will get a better opportunity, if he does poorly he will be fired. I don’t see him as a 10 year coach at GT.
The more I think about it, the more I like the hire. He is a solid coach and Batt is getting us competitive and sound. I think Key could have done well but we Batt went with a proven coach that can build a program.
I think Fritz is a decent coach, but that would be a head scratching hire… It would make more sense to stick with Key and hire an OC to run a different offense.
Sticking point from a money perspective or because we don’t want one of his coordinators? It would be kind of odd to hire a head coach that couldn’t pick his own staff.
At any rate we need to lock down the coach we want as other positions are opening up quickly.
He’s not my first choice but he has done a really good job stabilizing the program. He is a definite upgrade from Collins and isn’t a divisive figure. I would be opposed to any contract for Key beyond 3-4 years.
Some folks won’t like this take, but here it is….CPJ left GT in the best financial state since Dodd. He left a winning program, and did nothing to take away from GT. The fact that GT went all on on Goof Collins is all on GT and not CPJ. The fact that CPJ has thoughts on who to hire at GT is the...
We played hard and I credit the coaches for having a good game plan as well as having the team ready to play. Key deserves to stay but I don’t think he is ready to be head coach.
