A good leader surrounds himself with good people. I thought the Brown hire was strange - I thought his primary prowess was recruiting and it would take a couple seasons to get in the players he'd want. To take a team coming off a pair of 9 loss seasons and get them to 6-6 is a major success IMO.
I'm really surprised how many folks are discounting Graham. He often played like a freshman, but I thought it was pretty obvious he's got a ton of upside potential. Playing behind what was probably the worst OL in all P5 conferences with WRs (other than Brown) that struggled to get separation...
Totally agree about exaggeration (I'd add jumping to conclusions and binary thinking).
My frustration is seeing strong stances based on a single game against the best team in the country. Ultimately, I want to see an O that is effective. I don't much care what that contains beyond the extent...
And people will often choose to believe what they want to believe. If you expected a sudden complete metamorphasis of the O, I would say your expectations are out of line. I'm kind of shocked a former player wouldn't see this as I would expect that kind of reaction from fans who don't understand...
Pretty sure you guys are just talking past each other here. You can both be right. Yes, you can tell LJ had some jitters out there. No, that doesn't mean you can write him off or that he will always have jitters or that he shouldn't be in contention to start. Having jitters in 1 series against...
I think a lot of folks are underrating LJ's athleticism. I agree that he's not as athletic as Oliver and Graham, but he's still plenty athletic to be a dual threat. He was pushing Marshall for the starting role last year before his injury. That wouldn't have happened if he wasn't athletic.
I'm pretty sure we haven't had a 6 month period in the last 20 years where nobody has left the team. Not being cynical, it's just the nature of the beast between injuries, academics, and guys just not being happy. It's not a GT thing - happens everywhere.
I'm pretty sure if CPJ had retired under his predecessor, it would have gone something like this:
CPJ to AA Staffer: "Here's my retirement letter, effective immediately"
AA Staffer calls Sasquatch and leaves VM saying "sir, Paul Johnson has retired effective immediately - please call me back...
I don't know - they're a total wild card in my mind. That's not a team devoid of talent (they're probably in the upper half of the ACC talent-wise). But Mack Brown's success has mostly been predicated upon recruiting, and he doesn't strike me as a quick turn-around coach. Wouldn't surprise me...
Despite their long stretch of mediocrity, Tennessee's recruiting has never dropped that much. Looking at Rivals recruiting rankings, their lowest ranked class since 2009 was #21, with several top 10 classes. You could make the case that no team in the country has under-performed their talent...
If you're going to reference statistics in your argument, I would recommend showing the statistics. I don't have them, but my perception based on what I have seen is that they are not very consistent. I'm certainly open to seeing statistics otherwise, but it's a matter of your perception vs the...
You seem to have an odd agenda because you're completely disregarding what everyone is saying. The primary point is that the NCAA hasn't shown any consistency in how they apply their rules (or how quickly). Yes, I think everyone would support Martell or Fields getting a waver to play at...
Seriously. I really don't know who wins with the current rule. From the team's perspective, it's rare that a key contributor transfers. It may be someone with the potential to be a key contributor in a couple years...but I get that scholarship back and the chance to find another guy who can be...
Absolutely no disrespect to Clayton, but that is almost certainly a coached response (and that's a good thing). Our staff knows that negative responses probably hurt any appeals chance. If Clayton did say that without a coach/staff member telling him "hey, make sure anything you say publicly...
Honestly, I doubt the large majority of pundits know anything about our staff beyond Collins, Key, and Patenaude at this point - not because the coaches are unknowns but because unless you're a beat writer covering a team, you probably don't know any more of a new staff beyond HC and...
130 FBS teams now. Pretty much every team outside of the top 10 (and some inside it) has those "coulda woulda shoulda" games. Frankly, the difference between everyone in the Coastal last year other than UNC was pretty much a bad play or bad bounce or two - you could replay the season with the...
I'll be extremely happy if we finish inside the top 40. We certainly weren't last season (you'd be hard pressed to make the case we were top 50 last season - most computers that do complete rankings had us in the 50s). I'm very optimistic about the future, but I don't expect to be better than...
I think they can and do have both (even if it's not published). You can obviously only have a set number of guys at 1st and 2nd strings. With "above the line", it's basically saying "you can contribute in a game" - you may have 2 or 3 guys ahead of you, but it tells the player they are good...
