This is all I know so take it for what its worth. Center calls if it's an even or an odd front and it's the tackles responsibility to say if the defender is a 3 technique or a 4i technique. If the player is a 4i then you read him. If he's a 3 the guard base block him.
If you are looking for an actual playbook of CPJ there is one on here from '94 or '95 Hawaii that you can download. I tried to upload it but it was to big.

There are other cool ones as well if you like...
The guard has to be mobile enough to get to the second level if the dt is the man your using as a dive read. Mason is much quicker and more mobile than Devine.
It's not innovative. It pretty common for option teams to do. CPJ has been using it since the mid 80's. He's also used it every year since he's been here. My high school team did it in the mid nineties. It's to formation the defense out of 8 in the box. Even if the WR is ineligible the...
What are you talking about? We ran a screen in week one and it wasn't open and JT ran around an lost about 15 more yards than he should have. Now if you are saying we don't run a lot of screens then fine but we do run screens.
On the triple CPJ teaches the BB to read the block on the defender one player inside number one. Number one is the defender the Qb is reading as the dive read. The BB should be cutting off that block. I doubt that cook ever told him to put his head down and go forward without reading his...
I don't know on the counter option but JT pitched off the dive read on the play at 0:29. That is why the a back was crushed unless I'm missing something.
The quote was we ran a play 5 times before we blocked it right. He was talking about a trap play. We did not run a trap play five time in a row. Carry on.
Honest question, not trying to be a smart a**, if we as counting pitches as positive then shouldn't snoddy's dropped pitch count as a turnover against Thomas?
What's the quote from A Brave New World. "2143 repetitions make the truth." or something close to that. The said part of it is that the world kinda works that way:(
I think, all things being equal, I would rather have the draw run by Thomas with a lead blocker of the b back. You gain an extra blocker that way and I always would like a chance to see Thomas in the open field.
Here is a link from '89 Hawaii vs San Diego St. It should start at the right spot. I believe the 2 biggins are d-lineman.
Also if you go to Hawkaida's you tube channel you can see some cool full length Hawaii games when CPJ was there.
I don't think he was joking about using the d-lineman in the power I. I've seen a couple of games when he was at Hawaii where he did just that. Thanks for the link.
