  1. Conference Realignment

If GT doesn’t make it to the Big 10 I’m probably not watching any major college football anymore. There’s just not gonna be enough eyeballs for a <60 team trimmed-down “super college” league to grow against all the other sports and entertainment options that exist today. Fanbases can’t be...
  2. Conference Realignment

The more teams that get left behind the sooner it’s just a minor pro league and the money starts to dry up. The Big 10 thinks they can be a second pro league for a sport in the US? Good luck to them. It’s failed for everyone else. The college game had draw from uniqueness and depth, and...
  3. 2023 Fall Practice Notes

IMO the assumption of a QB contest 1or issues is just lingering trauma of two decades of not seeing real year over year improvement in a passing QB since Godsey. More paranoia than rational.
  4. Conference Realignment

I’m having a REAL hard time taking this “FSU has out-strategied everyone else JUST WAIT AND SEE” stuff seriously. More and more every day with some of these claims. The other schools making moves have mostly just made the damn moves, not tried to beg everyone to believe that they could.
  5. Conference Realignment

Adding more schools with (currently, at least) demonstrably nowhere else to go would make a future blow-it-all-up vote harder for an FSU or Clemson, so that’s my guess for them. Even if that’s a five, ten year from now thing.
  6. Conference Realignment

Got bored, did some rough math on what streaming prices would need to look like to replace cable TV money. Let's say 16 teams in a conference. Subscribing annually (if you do it monthly it gets more complicated since so many people would quit over the spring and summer). Let's say 20M people...
  7. Conference Realignment

SMU is deep with money; light speculation from growing up in that area: seeing TCU do so well in the smaller town next door must be driving them crazy. ND being hit by the money spigot being turned off could certainly shake some things up. And I’m sure couldn’t happen to a nicer crew.
  8. Coming soon to GT: Corporate sponsorships and new names for football field and basketball gym

Hyundai is rapidly trying to shed the economobile reputation, there’s probably an aspect of wanting to get a shine from GT to them in the less-sportsy parts that will come out. Like Toyota or Honda a few decades ago.
  9. Conference Realignment

LHN had a lot to do with why A&M left though, right? Texas forcing stuff down people’s throats? Can’t see the SEC wanting to have that going on. https://www.on3.com/college/texas-longhorns/news/longhorn-sec-network-folding-transition-athletic-director-chris-del-conte/ Looks like it’s going away.
  10. Conference Realignment

https://www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/38158198/penn-entertainment-rebrand-sportsbook-espn-bet ESPN selling their name for a sports book for 150M a year + other stuff to try to supplement their revenue
  11. Coming soon to GT: Corporate sponsorships and new names for football field and basketball gym

I mean my first reaction is it’s a great amount
  12. Conference Realignment

Speaking of that elephant in the room, imagine if FSU got out of the ACC, announced they were joining the Big 10, and the Big 10 got a ton of backlash - especially from their newest members and territory - that blew it up.
  13. Conference Realignment

FSU should try it, screw em. IMO the GOR seems like it would open the networks up to federal copyright liability if they tried to pay FSU for something that the ACC has the rights too. I’d love to see a billion lawsuits over it kill FSU over five years by a thousand cuts and let everyone else...
  14. Conference Realignment

It’s definitely a sleeper chance/gamble type of thing. I’m on the fence now about where I think national interest will play out. Tv brought $$$$ to the game, but in the long run can a small CFB “super league” really compete with the NFL in the national interest and $$$ game if you can see any...
  15. Conference Realignment

I think the Big 12 has a decent sleeper chance of being a big surprise in the twenty year time frame since they have growing up and comer schools that aren’t completely focused on trying to be the absolute best academically and appealing to helicopter parents and students who don’t have football...
  16. Conference Realignment

Do most programs across the country have less fan interest than 20 years ago, or more? I’d wager it’s the former, and the SEC and Big 10 (and in that timeframe, ACC even!) have accelerated the overall decline by poaching a small percent of schools from conferences and leaning many of the rest...
  17. Conference Realignment

I’d put in a bet that after 2036 the Big 10 and SEC will take a haircut on dwindling fan demographics alone. USC TV games aren’t gonna bring young new west coast kids into CFB fanhood. And media companies would have to find a way to get a 100-million strong cross-sports subscription package to...
  18. Conference Realignment

They can at the end of bubbles. HBO Max and Hulu and I think others have pulled some of their TV shows off the services entirely since they had fixed royalty costs and weren’t as popular as expected. A lot can happen before the next rounds of deals come up in six years or so, but everything...
  19. Conference Realignment

How many of those justify the next set of Big 10 or SEC rates? Once you’re into the UNC, VT, Miami group I don’t know if any of them are full-share teams like UT, OU, USC. They are all upgrades to the Big 12, but will the Big 12 be an upgrade to them? Maybe the Big 10 or SEC would be looking...
