  1. GT-UofL score predictions?

26-21 GT. Offense moves the ball well but stalls in the red zone a bunch and kicks a bunch of FGs as well as a couple TDs from first-game jitters
  2. Toughest ACC non-conference schedule: GT of course

I think a claim of “UGA has been better than GT at managing their football program for long term success and reputation for at least 50 years” sounds pretty accurate, frankly.
  3. Amazon considering minority stake in ESPN

That price would be fine to me for all sports - cheaper than getting all the other cable channels I don’t want - but they’re gonna have a nasty uphill struggle vs cable bundles because of all the “what about the game on Fox? What about the games on TNT/TBS?” Etc for whichever sport a particular...
  4. Conference Realignment

That’s a 90s-Microsoft level move by the Big 10 in retrospect lol
  5. Toughest ACC non-conference schedule: GT of course

Yeah but GT could sell out a Thursday night game just as easily as a Saturday 3:30 one and I’d take the exclusive national Thursday “only football on Tv” spot back then over a 3:30 game that nobody gets outside of the Southeast unless they go online to ESPN3(60). I think that 2008 Miami game...
  6. Conference Realignment

You’re right that ESPN has more leverage but I don’t think it’s as huge a difference as it looks at first. Not having access to your local NBA/MLB/NHL teams is pretty significant yet some of the online players turned Bally down on and nobody really won that standoff. The new streaming services...
  7. Toughest ACC non-conference schedule: GT of course

Weren’t Thursday night games quite a bit more premium twenty years ago before everyone started doing it and the NFL got in on the night too? More exposure than normal from those games, not less. I remember a fair amount of those being big deal games that we loved as students too back then.
  8. Haynes King starting vs. UL

Yeah I was disagreeing with the quoted one and agreeing with the link. Too many layers!
  9. Haynes King starting vs. UL

That analyst comparison really does both players a disservice, I think, by ignoring the offensive coaching of the last three years vs what I’m hoping to see this year.
  10. Conference Realignment

I thought this chart was interesting for how it ranks by playoff viewership vs semis-to-semis or whatever. https://www.sportsmediawatch.com/college-football-playoff-ratings-bcs-history/ The overall bad things seem to be: we haven’t hit a 30M game in almost a decade, and struggling to break 25...
  11. Conference Realignment

I'm not disagreeing with any of those claims about fanbase distribution or consolidation predictions. You're just saying it's a good thing for the long term revenues of the sport. But I'm not convinced that there's some inherent magic to consolidation that will turn "numbers going down" ->...
  12. Conference Realignment

Yes. My claim is that CFB's actions are the actions of a sport that's well on its way to getting itself displaced. I'm just trying to understand what direct fan metrics point to improved overall health. Doesn't seem to be a trend of increased attendance. The only ratings numbers I can find...
  13. Conference Realignment

It was in my base plan of YouTube TV last year for the base price. I'm assuming it will be again this year, but I'm not gonna renew until next Friday. ;) Behind the scenes a smaller or larger chunk of that $70/month is gonna get directed to it based on where you live. Subject to negotiation...
  14. Conference Realignment

You'll forgive me if I don't think the entertainment market of 100 years ago is that relevant. LOTS more options out there today. That's not an answer to the question: if the NHL threw in the towel on 2/3 of its teams and said "who needs anything but Canada and the Northeast" would that make you...
  15. Conference Realignment

I think the free-money-era and media arms race prompted by the emergence of streaming made people confuse revenue growth spurred by media company turf wars with actual growth. I'm worried about attendance trends. I'm worried about viewership trends. Even the highest rated playoff games the past...
  16. Conference Realignment

I know I've been beating this drum a lot, but it sounds like a really bad thing for the future of the sport. There are two types of businesses: those that grow, and those that extract on their way down after a peak. All of this conference shuffling looks like the "haves" just trying to extract...
  17. Conference Realignment

My lazy armchair psychologist diagnosis of Aggies is that they have way too much little brother syndrome to UT to ever do anything that could be perceived as a step down or a weakness-driven move. Even their SEC move seemed as much about UT as about themselves. I’m still a little shocked that...
  18. Conference Realignment

DFW - and especially Dallas IME - is UT and A&M territory, even TTU, before TCU territory. (Which doesn’t help SMU immediately, but they’re in the biggest city of the metroplex and could attract at least as many casual fans as TCU if they start winning.) i wonder if A&M and UT getting...
  19. Conference Realignment

Nothing there to prevent SMU doing what TCU did (again, I suppose, hah) and the DFW market is attractive from a potential standpoint, even though it has the same “saturated with fans of bigger state schools” problem as Atlanta. Wonder if they feel like being in a bigger conferences would unlock...
  20. Conference Realignment

Unless the goal from the media companies is to have fewer games to broadcast to cut costs and improve margins - instead of trying to grow total revenue instead - I dont see the relevance of fanbase concentration. 50% of a viewing audience would be bad in the long run for everyone, even the top...
