  1. Yet another CPJ vs CGC thread

Bringing up third string struggles seems to prove the anti-Collins point to me: Johnson found himself a good backup QB immediately so that the team could be hold things together with Shaw. Third string was a bigger problem, sure, but Collins couldn’t even figure out plan A. One main theme seems...
  2. Coming soon to GT: Corporate sponsorships and new names for football field and basketball gym

Oooh that’s interesting to know the backstory, makes sense, thanks!
  3. Yet another CPJ vs CGC thread

It doesn’t seem like THAT many coaches were interested this year. I think money was the biggest problem both then and now. But “could anyone have been successful” is giving Collins far more of a pass than he deserves. Anyone who thinks things improved midseason under Key should see that.
  4. Yet another CPJ vs CGC thread

Collins had a hard job in year one, but seemed to recruit ok initially and nobody would blame him too much for an initial bad year. But then his coaching made it even worse than it needed to be, and that hurt his recruiting too, and it started a downward spiral. I absolutely believe others...
  5. Coming soon to GT: Corporate sponsorships and new names for football field and basketball gym

I think we had a triple name for basketball briefly: McDonalds Cremins Court @ AMC or such. Wonder what the $$$ of that one looked like, though; either the AA or McDs didn't keep it into the later 2000s.
  6. Kiffin on NIL and Portal

The coach salary discrepancies between the richest schools and the rest aren’t “good for college football” either but the coaches somehow are much less concerned about that…
  7. Conference Realignment

Has anyone ever done separate broadcasts in CFB? Do the conferences have agreements preventing it? If there doesn’t turn out to be a single “power league network” thing I cant imagine the market supporting “sign up for another subscription to watch a random out of conference game once a year.”...
  8. Conference Realignment

I think there's a good chance that this is correct. ESPN is never going to make as much from cable companies as they did when cable subscribers were at an all time high. I think/hope you need proximity of events too, especially to keep the fans of the middle-of-the-pack schools subscribed. I'm...
  9. How Transfer Portal and NIL has changed college recruiting

Well, that got me up off my butt enough to write my Senators arguing that college athletes should be paid for their work as employees, like all the non-athlete student employees are.
  10. How Transfer Portal and NIL has changed college recruiting

I don’t think you get high level scholarship offers without being exposed to the nature of competition, and seeing how many of your HS teammates don’t get those same offers. Just easier than ever for everyone else to whisper in your ear that the grass is greener elsewhere.
  11. GT Hoops General Topics

The long regular season is a grind but I find it hard to complain about there being “too many” games - still lots of passion in the playoffs IMO
  12. GT Hoops General Topics

I think you could make a case for Lebron/Davis and Durant->GS as "superteams" but then again, process-wise, Lebron was already in LA before they got Davis (and does that mean you'd call Doncic/Irving a superteam cause: lol) and GS was already very very very good, and that's still, what, just 3...
  13. NIL, Transfers, and Stratospheric Salaries. What Is the Future of GT Football and College Football in General?

“Push a bunch of the money back under the table where we can pretend to ignore it for our big moneymaker programs”, yeah? Things like standard contracts would make sense if they were drafted with just as much input from players too…
  14. NIL in CBB

The NBAPA has done work in recent years to buff up the pension plan for retired players - including for previously retired players. I think structural things like that would go a long way, but nobody with any influence in the college game is incentivized to push for it. Deferred income would go...
  15. NIL in CBB

I kinda wish we could put salary caps on the administration and facilities more than anything else. We’re well past using football revenue to give other sports scholarships, after all. A bunch of people making money by paying themselves first instead of players, and who get more the more they...
  16. Conference Realignment

Idle thought: even if we get to a post-cable world where people subscribe to the Big10 directly, I think the Atlanta area has a lot of value to the conference just because it’s big and has a lot of alums. Maybe GT isn’t the biggest fanbase to add, but the further any fan is from their school...
  17. Conference Realignment

If there’s truly six schools already wanting out if I’m NCST and UVA and UL and Pitt I’m getting the Big 12 on the phone ASAP.
  18. Conference Realignment

That article is light on big-picture "why" answers. Lots of numbers, and saying the Big 10 hasn't fixed things, but no evidence that joining was a mistake. So they're still losing money. What would the alternatives have been? Especially if they want to compete vs fold up shop basically? This...
  19. NIL in CBB

There’s way too much of an urge to paint in black and white here. If we can’t imagine a system that could both be financially beneficial to people and more exploitive than it has to be than it’s hard to have a real conversation at all, because the world is full of nuance. This is only a...
