I didn't 'denigrate" the ACC. I said it is pointless to spend a lot of time debating whether one conference is superior to another based on a one year won-loss record.
You seem to want to debate that, "Oh, it surely is!"
Fine. Find someone likeminded and go for it.
" .. should Alabama get credit for playing such a "tough" schedule against such opponents as a 6-3 LSU team and a 5-4 A&M team?" No, they shouldn't. Those teams aren't that great this year and neither is Alabama. Competitive, sure. Dominating? No.
I'm not trying to convince you that Alabama is...

There are so many factors that go into determining who can be “perceived“ as a superior conference that it’s really a useless discussion.
Does an ACC team beating Vandy really matter? Does beating a 6-3 LSU, a 5-4 Texas A&M team, a 7-3 Notre Dame team mean much?
What happens when...
There are all sorts of models for this sort of stuff, not GT-specific, but others have done something similar. I looked into it a few years ago. Off the top of my head ..
Net passing yards. Las Vegas bookies use this stat. Teams which have the highest net passing yards tend to win more often...
There used to be an Asst AD for football, and there’s all the other functions like football ops, travel, etc … but I haven’t checked up since J Batt took over.
I think your point is a valid one.
Isn't this just an Ichikawa diagram?
Instead of results being a function of Managment, Methods, Manpower, Materials, Machinery ... It's Coaching, Scheme, Talent, Facilities, Resources. Same idea ... there's no magic bullet.
I think this is exactly right. But I think it goes even further. Tech has to define what it expects. Does it expect to compete for a Natty every year? Or, can GT keep the donations coming in, fans somewhat happy, and get tv revenue for a habitual 7-5 team?
Figure out the goal, then figure out...
The “Tech” coaching tree is one way to look at it but it doesn’t include the philosophy of a particular coach.
You should include Ray Graves (70-31-4) and Frank Broyles (149-62-6), both of whom were assistants to Dodd. Dodd, of course, apprenticed under Neyland (173-31-12). Neyland had his...
Maybe.
I look at it compared to other teams. A comparable is Vanderbilt. Since 2004, Vandy has a football win percentage of 0.367. Tech is 0.53 … not far below our long term rate.
Getting our historical win rate is not insurmountable… it’s 7 wins a year with an occasional breakout. The...
I recall an economist who looked at transfer payments and opined that things were worse today, economically speaking, than the Great Depression. We just don’t have soup lines anymore. They are replaced by EBTs.
Tech has long benefitted from the rise of the crappy bowl game. The Quick Change Oil...
Bud Peterson famously said that his only obligation to GT Athletics was to hire an athletic director. That's it. So, he wanted a Tech guy so that he could check the box.
Stansbury probably would have made a good AD in 1972. If you look at most of the recent hires, most of them have extensive...
One of the things I used to enjoy about the old coaches (Bear Bryant, Dodd, Bo), is how simple their game plans were. Bear’s were often on one side of a piece of paper.
The stats are that your likelihood of scoring is proportional to your starting field position. Get the ball on your own ten...
I think we just need to relax.
Auburn, which recruits (arguably) better, has more resources and a university commitment to athletics is also 3-4. It takes time.
One player told me at camp, nobody knew another player. Nobody. “Who are you? What position do you play?”
Coaches have an idea of how...
I spoke to an onside kick specialist who played on that team. He said they had seven different types onsides kicks. Very interesting in how they thought about the game. But it worked for them.
Here’s a coach that rarely punts and always on sides kicks. Pulaski High School. Nine state championships. Coach just moved to D1.
Kelley’s approach is completely data driven, as Wetzel wrote:
Kelley believes field position is completely overrated. The more important variable is turnover...
