NIL, Transfers, and Stratospheric Salaries. What Is the Future of GT Football and College Football in General?

You can say that about anything. If only … they didn’t spend money on recruiting, spend money on facilities, spend money on dining, spend money on conditioning, etc.

NIL, Transfers, and Stratospheric Salaries. What Is the Future of GT Football and College Football in General?

“The U.S. hyper-commercialized system of college sports, which does not exist anywhere else in the world, is in a period of overarching transition and deep financial crisis.” We are doing it to ourselves.

NIL, Transfers, and Stratospheric Salaries. What Is the Future of GT Football and College Football in General?

If players want a percentage of th revenues, they should get a percentage of the expenses too. This will have to be transparent… which means unionization. “Fundamentally, the choices are to move toward unfettered commercialization, allowing relatively free and open labor markets for the...

NIL, Transfers, and Stratospheric Salaries. What Is the Future of GT Football and College Football in General?

Athletic Associations also carry enormous expenses, none of which players have to contribute towards. Of the D1 programs, 80% are breakeven or operating at a loss. ”In 2019, only 25 of 130 schools in the high-grossing Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) whose members are large, mostly public...

I don’t take it disrespectful but thanks for that. 50 years ago, the measure of a successful coach was attendance and a percentage of the gate. Dodd himself said the coach owns the quality of the product on the field. And should be paid accordingl. Wash State and others are screwed. Not...

You are passionate about that because it’s the new proxy for attendance. Ask Washington State.

I really want you to argue to ESPN why Boston College deserves $80M a year in media rights. All animals are equal. Only some animals are more equal than others. Silly. BOTH programs bring significantl fan bases who care. Why not ask about Florida Atlantic vs Murray State?

Seriously? One viewer of Lower Slobodia vs Trotsky State is not the same as a 7 rating of UGA v Alabama for a natty. This is the dichotomy in sports today. Viewers v viewers that matter. CFB is a business now.

    Conference Realignment

I do too. My point is that it’s irrelevant to CFB as we are coming to experience it today and in the future. Nostalgia is being cast aside as are traditionally rivalries. I think I’m forcing folks to confront an unhappy part of CFB. I accept that. I don’t like it either. But IIWII.

Do you watch it with the expectation that one of the two teams will be national champion? I don’t. I enjoy the nostalgia of it but we are in a very, very different sports environment than even 5 years ago. And it’s going to get worse.

    Conference Realignment

In CFB today, Army is irrelevant. Yes they have fans but … they will never win a Natty, they will never get a $70 million media rights deal and yes, compared to 30-odd other teams, “nobody cares“. They are interested, but not enough to monetize it in any meaningful way. I looked at the stats...

    Conference Realignment

Wow! Actual facts! So Army got $5 million. Let’s say it went up. Can’t be too much if they are willing to join the AAC for $7 million. Let’s call it $7 million. In CFB today, that’s not very much. I doubt there’s much demand to carry the product on any network on a regular basis as the...

Ok. The networks paid Army $1. You’re right. Pointless to continue.
  15. Vespidae

    Conference Realignment

I agree. But that’s not the point. In D1, Army is not the premier program. It’s not even in the Top 50, financially. No one is clamoring to broadcast the Army Network on ESPNor Fox. But some think otherwise… Money matters to those whose expenses have to be earned and not taxpayer paid.

    Conference Realignment

Why don’t you use actual facts? How much is Army getting in its broadcast rights? Is it $35 million a year? If there are 12 schools in the AAC, that suggest that Army is worrh about $7 million in broadcast rights. Not much.
  17. Vespidae

    Conference Realignment

No, I’m not moving goalposts. In College Football today, Army is irrelevant. They aren’t monetizing value in line with others and their chances of making the CFB playoff is …zero.

    Conference Realignment

And how much money is Army pulling in every year for broadcast rights? So much they are willing to join the AAC. The same conference SMU can’t wait to escape. Right.

    Conference Realignment

No, my friend, they don’t. There’s no one willing to pay to watch service academy sports. If there is, monetize it and show me. But you can’t.
