I believe we need to bear in mind that our O essentially led us to 20 points against a very good D with our backup QB, and the RB and TE positions badly dinged up. Meanwhile, our D held their O to 24 points.

The game got away from us in the 4th due to botching FG’s and the pick-6. Clean that (ST) up and reestablish the run and we’ll be OK going forward.

I think we will be back to running well and hitting intermediate passss as a key part of offense.

Gt needs to have VERY GOOD ST the rest of the way.

ST is now on Key to fix.
No more acting supprised. ST Its been bad for all of TFP when Key was ast head coach.

Background content for blocked kick

I knew and tailgated w the Wells family ( Wesly never missed a field goal inside the 40, only missed a few longer than 45, went 4 for 4 to beat Miami with clutch end of game kick, Was never blocked) Wes kicks were
HIGH AT LOS, HIGH AT LOS, HIGH AT LOS with
LOTS OF ROTATION so it was straight that let him be clutch from EITHER HASH.
sobplays weren't limited) TFP changed go in search of grest and we got crap .

Been watching Birr and he seemed to kick high enough , straight and long.

Watching the warm up at ND from row 23 at 40 with Birr on left hash, I saw Birr practicing - - 3 from 58 yds that were straight and long. ""BUT the kicks were very low at LOS."" .
No one was checking.
Good coaching?
Why was no one checking?
hieght at LOS?

Sounds like he is working on increasing his distance, concerned about balls from ballooning on him. First priority is not get it blocked at LOS.

Not trying to imply that height at LOS is not something to concentrate on and for coaches to pay attention to. But, that was not the issue against ND. For both FGs, the snap was far too high. The holder barely got the ball to the ground on the one that was blocked. I only saw it from the stands, and haven't watched a replay, but it appeared to me in person that Birr's leg was already in the motion of kicking before the ball made it to the ground.

It seems to me like the special teams problems are like a comedy of errors. The kicker messes up one time. Then the snapper messes up. Then the gunner overshoots the returner. Then the punter punts a line drive. Then a blocker just misses and doesn't touch the defensive guy. It hasn't been a consistent problem that can be addressed. It seems to always be a different person making a different mistake almost every time.

Agree with your perception. And when you have a variety of issues cropping up within a specific group, you can try examining the common denominator.

Sticking with the fg comments -
I am not ok with warm ups by kicker being low at LOS.

I have seen way worse snaps placed and kicked - that worked because the kicker was as starting his kick on the assumption ball will be placed in right spot at the normal time of the kickers foot arriving at ball. BUT YEA IT SHOULD BE DOWN WAY FASTER so kicker uas not going off muscle memorey

When Wells was perfect, he had Brad Stewart as the holder. Maybe the warm up kick would have been higher if they had a backward lean of the ball. i have no idea?

But we had no one watching. Heck the kicker could be taking 2 long from snap to kick. We had a kick block for house call.

Seems like we would be checking and encouraging.
during pregame.

I like Birr. He will get squared away.

They just need more drill. Freer and Shanahan have been good for over a full season now. Birr needs to only worry about hitting the ball right.

Pyron didn’t forget how to pass or read coverage after the first TD down drive- ND adjusted.... ratcheted up the pressure, disguised coverages in the secondary and covered our receivers better after that
And from the first TD to the last TD drive Pyron was not effective throwing the ball. Football is a team game and the opponent has a say in the outcome. None of that changes the fact that Zach was not effective passing the ball for nearly 3 quarters.

Now he was very effective to start and finish the game which showed he clearly has the ability to be a very good passer/QB. He clearly needs more game experience to become fully comfortable facing good defenses. Any QB who had not played meaningful minutes would face the same challenge with lack of game experience. It is the simple reality of being the backup. I suspect the game will slow down a bit this week for him.

It's nice to have a QB like Zach as our #2 guy!

Between the first and last TD, ZP passed for about 150 yards and moved the team into FG range twice. If our not-so-special teams had not botched the two FG’s, the score would have been 24-13 on the possession when the pick-6 occurred. Not saying we win, but our recollection of the game would likely be quite different.

Pyron had one excellent pass to #4 that went for 60 yards and resulted in a botched FG. He had 90 yards in the rest of the 3 quarters in this discussion. One excellent pas and run play in 3 quarters is not very good regardless of what one's memory believes.

Pyron had 269 total passing yards, so I don't think your math is adding up.

…and, if, instead of the pick Zach takes the team the length of the field as he did on the ensuing drive, the score suddenly becomes 24-19 with about a minute left. I know if “ifs and buts were candy and nuts…,” but that’s the game the stats point to.

Last week really did hinge on our 3 big mistakes. Clean those up and we should be back in the W column.

I think Zach is more than capable to run the offense but I do thing the zone reads and RPO’s are better executed by King which opens up our run game more . Zach isn’t as fast as King too so that makes it easier for the defense to key in on Jamal . Hoping for Buster to come in with a nice game plan for Saturday . Go Jackets !

If you follow the discussion, there have been several back and forth comments, the numbers in that post don't account for our first two possessions thru our first TD and our last TD drive (late 4th quarter) which was a stretch of around 3 full quarters. The 60 yard play came during the bad 3 quarter stretch.

With all but official wording coming out that Zach has been playing hurt, and I have no doubt it is true, that explains some of the issues.
I remember towards the end of the Notre Dame game he took a heavy thump and took a while to get up, and another time He got up it looked like his arm or shoulder was hurting real bad,

Yet he soldiered on! That is him not wanting to give up on your team. I think most players are like that, some more so than others.

If true then appreciate the effort, but man this is crazy. So we can’t be effective with one severely injured QB, but we can with another severely injured QB?

I’m not sure all of this adds up. King doesn’t seem like the kind of guy that wants to sit out any more than Zach does. So I doubt the staff thought Zach’s injury was so bad it would limit our chances to win the game. If so I can’t imagine why they wouldn’t move on to Philo as the starter.

Too much speculation going on for my taste. I’ve never felt like KQ really had much insider info, so I’ll believe it when there’s an official announcement.

Either way, I hope EVERYONE is healthy and available for Miami. I think we might need both King and Pyron to pull that one off

You're positing a scenario where the two QBs magnitude of injury is essentially identical. Surely you recognize that other scenarios exist where both are hurt but one is capable of playing while the other isn't.
