I thought we had a good game plan last year - we blocked a little different than usual, used the perimeter and plays that mitigated against their LBs firing gaps...and actually showed pretty good success with it.

For example, our 1st half drives last year:
1) -5 yards, PUNT
2) 75 yards, TD
3) 70 yards, TD
4) 17 yards, PUNT
5) 38 yards, DOWNS - it was 4th and 7 on Miami's 26 and we had no kicker.

Miami had 3 PUNTS, 2 FG and then we got Roofed and Miami scored a TD right as the half was expiring.

The point is, we had 200 yards of offense in the 1st half last year and scored on 2 of 5 possessions and should have either a FG on a 3rd or at least a FGA.

Then the rain came and Benson was gone and we couldn't do much of anything at all. I like our chances in being able to move the ball. Miami is going to do exactly what they usually do on offense and defense, so we know what's coming.

If we'd moved the ball ONCE in the second half of the game last year, outside of the kickoff score, the game would have been over. One first down conversion in the second half would have ended the game and there'd have been no throw.

Or one less ball bounced off a helmet and caught on 4th down......SO painful

When that play happened, I was standing 2 feet away from our flat screen TV up on the wall with my face right in it. I knew it was game over if they didn't convert 4th down. Then all that double bounce, almost intercept, falling down while making the catch happened - my wife was in the room so I ran out the front door onto the porch to start screaming at the clouds and some lady was walking her dog right out front. She kind of jumped and I was like 'sorry, a really bad football play just happened'. She probably thought I was crazy. But honest to pete, that stuff seems to happen to us way too much.

I was in a sea of Miami fans on the 30 yard line... I was crushed.

I bought tickets for that game as part of a south Florida vacation. Irma destroyed our rental in southwest Florida so my wife and I ended up going to North Carolina instead. We got back in town just in time to watch the fourth quarter. My wife would probably tell you that I pitched a temper tantrum in front of the TV. I would tell you that I was a tad too passionate in that moment... [emoji6]

If you have ever seen the movie “A Christmas Story” just replace my kids response on where they learned a certain word with my children stating “from my father watching a Georgia Tech football game” . Also had to apologize to the neighbors more than once. And I never swear at all otherwise.

I heard a woman in a restaurant today telling a story about her grandson. Apparently she had said, "Oh my goodness," to which her grandson said as an aside to someone else, "We don't say, 'sh**,' we say, 'Oh my goodness.'"

Heh. Reminds me of watching "rated R" movies on channel 36 and 46 back in the day. The dubs over the curse words were as entertaining as the movies themselves.

"Stupid motha-lova!"

Ok, tangent over. Carry on ...

I kinda wish you had not dredged up such bitter memories. Yes, it was a game that was not merely winnable but convincingly so. "Roofed" kind of explains those 100-yard dashes that served as drives for whomever we played, and then add in that "thing" that seems to jump up and bite us, and almost did against UNC. (A pickup-and-run six on first possession? I liked the sideline shot of Johnson afterward and gained a new appreciation for him. His hair was neither on fire nor had his head exploded. The man has to be doing yoga and I won't believe otherwise.) Miami's instant resurgence was greatly overwrought, as Clemson demonstrated in the title game. I hope this year it doesn't come down to the end.

I am not sure about that. Richt had no reputation for cheating at Georgia and got fired. His problem always has been his in-game coaching. He is just not very good at it, very odd for a former QB. And, I hate to rain on my own parade, but we lost to him last year. We need to think less of running up a a score and more about getting enough scores. And while we are at it, maybe holding on to the football. It can't be that hard.
This. I remain extremely concerned about their talent level and recall what they did to our offense last year after the first few series. Their base defense is much better at stopping midline, which is Oliver's one trick...and so far he has been pretty much a one trick pony. Our offense hasn't been all that good the last two years at finding answers when we are getting stonewalled, and I fear some of that will occur against their D, which is full of excellent athletes.

Could someone troll the UM sites and get something back? Y'all's conversation is great, but I'd rather hear about the lamentations of the UM fans.
So, more on topic,

Is Richt a good coach? I think so. Good. Not great.

I do agree with the sentiment that the role today is that of a CEO ... not as much as it was 20 years ago. I recall Lane Kiffin saying he didn't know 75% of the people in the Alabama Athletic center ... all reporting to Saban.

Lane Kiffin may very well be Richt's successor after Miami fires him.

Richt reminds me a lot of Bill Curry. Nice looking and polished. Neither are upper tier coaches . Their success was all about recruiting and when they had good assistants. Decent coaches and good men. Richt just doesn't fit the football culture at miami. Not sure he can change it.

Completely disagree with the 'one-trick pony' comment. Tobias can run much more of the offense than we've seen; he just excels at making quick decisions and getting downhill. We actually only run 5-6 midlines a game with TO; most of his success has been on the double option 'load-option' that we run off-tackle. Now, Miami does limit our midline success by playing the odd man front (with a nose) that makes it harder to run the midline. However, calling TO a one-trick pony is not fair or accurate.

I could see USF head coach Charlie Strong replacing Mark Richt in December 2019 or 2020:cigar:

Keep in mind that “what Miami did to our offense last year” ONLY happened after KirVonte got hurt, we were down to our 3rd string BB who limited what we could do, and then heavy rains made us go full-turtle and keep everything inside. Before those 3 things happened, they had zero answers for our offense. They were so pessimistic about stopping us that they tried to steal a possession early with the onside kick. We should wipe the floor with these clowns this year.

Isn't all coaching success due to recruiting and good assistants?
