When Should Hall Leave?

Like lancing a boil, let's put our bitches about whether the GT baseball coaches should be fired here so it isn't everywhere. I'll try to do the same. But if I am disappointed by our play and my filter is lowered by alcohol, I'll need help to stay kind.

I'll comment at the end of the season. But vote now

I would say that if we make the tourney this year, then he is safe for the 2019 season. We have a relatively young team this year and all 4 of the starters will be back next year. Also, on offense, we are probably only going to lose Bart, Bailey, and Johnson.

I am bothered (a lot) by our pitching situation....guys seem to get here and get hurt (Shadday, Hughes) or become ineffective (Gooden)...and rarely we get an unexpected bright sport (Gold, Thomas). Are we worse than other programs in losing pitchers to injury or changing their style and messing them up? I have been wondering about our pitching coach for some time.

I will also confess to being totally out of the loop and uneducated about baseball and coaching....but hey, it's the intenet right?

I think Winborne is better, but after Tuesday's game, it's clear that his limit is 2 innings.

I'd be curious what recruits are being told. If I were a prospect (or giving advice to one) who will begin playing no earlier than 2019... I'd at least ask the question (respectfully): "Coach... you've been here over 25 years, can I expect you'll be coaching my entire time at Tech. If not... can you share anything you know regarding a transition?"

This is a fair question and assuming Coach Hall is honest (I believe he would be)... the answer would say a lot about where things stand (informally at least) with his boss. Everyone knows the term of the current contract will end after 2021. Seems to me his answer would be a version of one of these:
1) I have no plans to hang it up. You can expect me to be your coach your entire tenure on the Flats. (Obviously.. implied here is that he could be fired and be gone anytime).
2) My plan is to retire while you are in school (20xx will be my last season).. The AD and I are already talking about a transition or plan to when the time is right.
3) My plan is to retire while you are in school (20xx will be my last season). The next coach will be hired by the AD. I do not expect to have any input into that.

While I'm at it.. all this talk about Hall needing to go is fine. It does irritate me. Here's why...& it's not because I think Hall is doing great things right now. Many would argue (correctly) this type of fan forum is the perfect place to vent and speculate... blah blah blah. However, my instinct is to dismiss (for the most part) folks who seem to just jump up and down and scream FIRE THE COACH with zero follow up on 'then what'. In the past when I've attempted to challenge guys on that concept... the responses are nearly always empty.
Examples (paraphrasing):
1) "...not my problem.. that's what they pay TStan the big bucks for" - Well...that is so true; but in my mind its hypocritical because they pay TStan the big bucks to decide on when to fire the coach too. You seem to want to have it both ways... Demand the firing (TStans decision)... yet unwilling to accept the fact that is the EASY part. Then what? It's all one decision process in my mind...a pretty complex one that involves the right timing to keep the program as healthy as possible while finding a replacement that can/will make a positive difference long-term. I am not even close to qualified to know what needs to be done in this regard... therefore, I am not willing to say with any confidence WHEN he should go.

2)"...any change is better than what we have. See Clemson" - well..that's easy to say; but there really is no way to know. I think the landscape of college sports has changed a ton in the last 10 years. More "haves" and "have nots". While baseball is less impacted than FB or basketball... I do think it is much more competitive across the board AND the elite programs have an increasing advantage (over Tech) than they did a few years ago. That relates mainly to the academic rigor at Tech more than anything. Just my opinion...more subjective feeling than anything else. It does not mean we cannot be competitive at the national level (better than we've been). However, it will take some luck (no injuries..we have a few already this year) and really productive recruitment (with minimal misfires).

One thing from the coaching changes in basketball is the speculation on who was out there immediately and in-depth. We have not seen any of that. I’m honestlu terrified of what we might get in place of Hall. I knew Louisville’s coach was gonna be good cause all I heard while he was at OM is he can recruit and coach hitting. And OM would be sorry if he left.


I really have no idea who would be a good replacement. Any wish lists out there?

Tech is still as blue blood in college baseball. We have ever advantage as any school out there. We quit taking advantage of our what was built. Recruiting is what is slipping. Not every 4* is really as 4*. Danny has hurt himself by not hiring real asst's and he's gotten lazy. Can't rest on past successe's. He has. If he's fired or leaves on his own, the next day some of the best coaches in country are going to be fighting for that job.

Like who? Who is on that wish list for GT? Just because it is a coveted job does not mean the hire will be good. Who is a good up and coming coach? UGa has made some bad hires in the past.

If Hall leaves at the end of the season then the two guys that I would really want are the Southern Miss coach or the East Carolina coach. Those guys have built top 25 programs.

You really under estimate what we offer now. We have a AAA club, Major League club thirty minutes away in bad traffic. Access to their personal. We have major league players pictures hanging on the walls, current and past. Like I've said before Danny did the hard part in building. He hasn't maintained. We are ripe for the picking. A sleeping giant we are.

Not to mention we have a large talent pool to recruit from and majority of them qualify for hope. Which helps us on the scholarship shortage.

You are obviously a better person than I. If something pisses me off, I just tune it out if it is entertainment (baseball). Fortunately GT baseball isn't there for me yet.

And yes, I agree we can get a better coach. The question is will we? Hall will not be at GT forever.
