Tomknight debuted Eagle Rare on p 10 of UNC Post Game. I’m drinking Broken Barrel Heresy Rye. Other recommendations?
Not a fan of Redbreast 10, but every time my wife comes back from visiting family in Ireland, she picks up a bottle of Redbreast 15 from Duty Free. That is a beautiful pour. Too expensive here in the States.I’m more a bourbon than a whiskey drinker but a trip to Ireland opened my eyes. Red Breast 10 year is really nice.
If you can find it on the shelf. Depending on where you live in the US, you may never see it in the shelf.I got gifted a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Smooth pour and you don't need to saw your leg off to buy a bottle.
Knob Creek is good but I personally like Buffalo Trace over all the others. If you can find it on the shelf. Depending on where you live in the US, you may never see it in the shelf.
Many people like BT. Personally, there are at least 5 or 6 equivalently priced bottles I’d drink before BT.
For those interested:
Knob Creek 9*
Elijah Craig
Wild Turkey 101*
Russell’s Reserve
Old Grandad 114
Maker’s 46
Bulleit
For Roses Small Batch
Early Times Botted-Bond*
New Riff
Old Forester Signature
My favorite among several that I like.I got gifted a bottle of Buffalo Trace. Smooth pour and you don't need to saw your leg off to buy a bottle.
BT has a unique flavor profile (similar to ER) that people either really like it or don't. I fly United. I usually have 2-3 doubles of BT each time I fly. It's good to be in 1st class and a ride when you land.Knob Creek is good but I personally like Buffalo Trace over all the others.
OGD 114 and ET BiB are two really great bourbons especially for the price. If you can find it on the shelf. Depending on where you live in the US, you may never see it in the shelf.

I’ve mentioned before that James Henry is surprisingly good. It was $35 a bottle but I haven’t bought any in a long while since moving from the north Georgia mountains where it’s made.OGD 114 and ET BiB are two really great bourbons especially for the price.
Both of them seem to jump $2-$3 every time they restock. People are finding out.
My guilty pleasure is Evan Williams BiB. The price is so embarrassingly low that you don’t want to tell your friends what you’re drinking, but they won’t complain if they don’t see the label.
It’s easy to be pleased with a $60 bottle. The magic is in finding the $25-$35 bottle. The quest is ongoing…
Thanks… I’ll look for it.I’ve mentioned before that James Henry is surprisingly good. It was $35 a bottle but I haven’t bought any in a long while since moving from the north Georgia mountains where it’s made.
They make a nice Rye also but, again, I’ve been away for awhile. Thanks… I’ll look for it.
Always up for a new option (none ever seems to go to waste)
I haven’t tried the Blue Note rye, but there is a version of their bourbon they bottle near 110 proof (maybe 107/108?) and it’s great. Maybe they call it “High note?”I usually keep 6 bottles open to compare/contrast on any given night. Two are too sweet to have more than one drink at a time, Angels Envy Rum Cask Finished Rye and Knobs Creek Smoked Maple, but if you like an alcoholic dessert they’re worth trying.
The other four open now are: Broken Barrel Heresy Rye, Blue Note Rye, WT101 and Makers 46.
Makers 46 is aged longer and is finished with more infused oak to give it a much richer finish. I don’t like the regular Makers but 46 is worth the extra $10. Blue Note rye is about $34. They have a Juke Joint bourbon around $32 and their top of the line is their Crossroads at over $50. The Broken Barrel is also around $35 and is finished with sherry cask staves. It has a slight dark chocolate finish, at least to me.I haven’t tried the Blue Note rye, but there is a version of their bourbon they bottle near 110 proof (maybe 107/108?) and it’s great. I’m deviating from my last post because it’s not a cheap bottle. It’s a good bourbon though… if you’re wanting to throw $60 at a bottle, it’s a good one.
Edit… Blue Note Uncut https://shop.bluenotebourbon.com/products/uncut
You’re the second who has mentioned bourbons I like along with makers 46… I like my bourbon hot. Don’t dislike makers but it’s just awfully mild. What’s the distinction on the makers 46?
Thanks… interesting. I’ll give makers 46 a try. Always open to a new one!Makers 46 is aged longer and is finished with more infused oak to give it a much richer finish. I totally agree on BH. Their dark rye is the worst thing I’ve ever tasted. Why would anyone add port directly to bourbon. Yuck. Thanks… interesting. I’ll give makers 46 a try. Always open to a new one!
I sound like a lush because all of my recommendations are high proof but I find that very many “typical” bourbons before they are watered down to 80-86 proof are really flavorful and complex
Case in point- OGD 114… its what becomes basil hayden when they water the crap out of it. not to mention, you can buy OGD for $30 but basil Hayden will cost you $40+… buy OGD and water it yourself. I don’t care for basil hayden at all. I have a couple bottles that were gifted to me (and I appreciate) but I give to guests who think they like bourbon
