If we want to play with the big boys, we need to pay with the big boys. Why aren't we paying for the 40 HR guy?

Realistically, there are to discussion threads here. One is why isn't GT apparently attracting the kind of attention an opportunity like Tech presents should attract? What did Bobinski promise us in his press conference, and does Bryce Drew meet those criteria. On the second, I'd say Drew does not meet the criteria Bobinski layed out, not that his isn't a damn good coach.

My point was pretty much, where are the coaches Bobinski was talking about? Did they all turn us down? Are we still talking to them? We'll just have to wait and see.

I'm comfortable with what I've read about Drew, but I've only seen a handful of games coached by him, and there's big faith in someone without much experience.

An AD should aim for the sky. Otherwise, they are not doing their job. That said, as a fanbase, we should be realistic in our expectations. Of the candidates that I have heard that sound realistic, Drew has sounded the best to me.

If you have other names that sounded better to you that you believe are realistic, I am listening. Otherwise, I am not sure what you are complaining about. If it is just that you think our AD should have publicly stated that we are not aiming for the sky, we will just agree to disagree. I am more concerned with who we hire than if our AD speaks too optimistically about the opening.

yeah, sounds like we're absolutely of opposite opinions. Fans are supposed to be unrealistic and the ones shooting for the sky. That's the whole idea of FANatic. Our AD has to work within the constraints of budget, interest, personality, etc. So, yeah, we're going to disagree there.

Also, I'm not complaining, per se. What I've said is that Bobinski (not a direct quote, but a paraphrase) talked about a seasoned head coach, someone who could recruit at the ACC level and that people would know. I don't remember exactly where he said everything, but some of it was his press conference, some of it was on-air interviews and some of it was what he told the guys who just signed their LOI's. Drew doesn't meet any of those criteria.

I'm not complaining about Drew. I have no opinion about Drew. Whether he can recruit at this level, match up against this level of coaching is pure speculation at this point. What I did say is that he's awefully green in the coaching ranks for what I would consider a high major job (even though we haven't been successful lately). I think I'd have rather seen us pull in a successful coach at the high-major level that was ready to step up to the big leagues. To me, this is like calling up a Class AA guy instead of trading for the guy you know can get the job done. If it's about the $$$, then we should have waited another year or so and got that guy.

AD's have to sell the job when it opens. Also not sure exactly what you heard when he was on 680. I listened and mostly heard the AD equivalent of coach speak.

I guess we will have to agree to disagree. If you are aiming for us to be Duke in basketball and Alabama in football, you are in for a miserable fan experience. Notably, aside from your general statements, you still haven't named any coaches you want us to go after that we haven't who (and this is a critical part) would have a mutual interest.

Preaching to the choir. A year ago I asked something similar. GT will never pay more for ball than Football.

To all the Capel likers, how do you know we didn't try to get him to come here only for him to turn around and decide he will stay at Duke? How do you know Capel wasn't our first choice, but HE turned it down?
Highly doubt anyone on this board knows! (okay, maybe a couple of folks, but they knew/know better than to say anything at this time.)

I don't understand what the issue is here or the point being made? No I don't know if he turned us down or if he ever was offered the chance to turn us down. What difference does it make?

Can /will anyone on GTSwarm confirm Capel was offered?

You're correct with the what does it matter comment. Bottom line is... it doesn't.

I'm looking for us to be competitive, at the highest level, in whichever endeavor we undertake. I think we have ample opportunity to do that in all athletics as well as academics.

Regarding other names, I think our program should be one that attracts interest from other high-major coaches looking to make that next step. I'll leave it for others better informed to determine who at that level would be viable for Tech.

I'm on board with Drew. I think your ceilings higher when you get a guy that can coach vs just recruit unless you're some scumbag who happens to coach at Kentucky.

Four Final Fours, one national championship, two finals appearances and one team that started 38-0 in the last 6 years doesn't exactly seem like a low ceiling.
